Jaimini Chara Dasha Times Your Life by Signs, Not Planets

Most people meet dasha through the Vimshottari — Saturn for nineteen years, Venus for twenty — and assume that is the only way to time a life. Maharishi Jaimini taught another. In chara dasha every period belongs to a sign, and the sign that runs the period behaves like a second ascendant: the planets sitting in it, the karakas it holds and the signs that see it decide what those years bring. The length of each period is not fixed either; it comes from where the sign's lord sits in your own chart. Astrologers who use both systems often find chara dasha sharper for marriage, career changes and moves, because it points to a part of the chart rather than to a single planet. This calculator lays out your full Jaimini chara dasha, from the sign mahadashas down to pran.

The Idea

Why Chara Dasha Gives Periods to Signs

The Jaimini Sutras look at a chart differently from the Parashari texts. Signs aspect signs, planets are ranked by degree into chara karakas, and the sign itself is treated as a living thing that carries the fortunes of whatever sits in it. Chara dasha follows from that view. Instead of asking which planet rules a stretch of years, it asks which part of the zodiac is switched on.

"Chara" means moving, and the name fits. The periods move through the signs one after another, and the length of each is worked out afresh for every chart. Two people born a few hours apart can have entirely different chara dasha sequences, because a different sign is rising and the lords of the signs have moved.

The practical effect is that a chara dasha period describes an area of life rather than a mood. A period of the sign holding your 10th-house matters and your Amatyakaraka tends to look like a career period, whoever rules it, because that is where the chart's work is kept.

The Sequence

Where Your Chara Dasha Begins, and Which Way It Runs

Chara dasha opens with the ascendant sign. Your first mahadasha is the sign that was rising when you were born, and the rest follow from there — but not always in the same direction. For some charts the sequence moves forward through the zodiac, Aries to Taurus to Gemini; for others it moves in reverse, Aries to Pisces to Aquarius. The direction is set at birth by the nature of the signs involved, and it holds for the whole cycle.

This is the first thing that surprises people who check their chara dasha against a friend's. Two charts with the same rising sign can run the same first period and then part ways completely, one moving forward and one back. A reverse sequence is not a mistake in the calculation; it is simply how that chart's clock turns.

Duration

How Long Each Chara Dasha Runs

Every chara dasha period lasts between one and twelve years, and the length is read from your own chart. Count from the dasha sign to the sign where its lord sits, and take one away. The count runs forward for half the signs and backward for the other half. Aries counts forward: if Aries is the dasha sign and Mars sits in Gemini, the count is three, so the Aries period runs for two years. With Mars in Leo the count would be five, and the period four years.

Two rules round this out. A lord sitting in its own sign gives the full twelve years. And Scorpio and Aquarius, each ruled by two planets in Jaimini — Mars and Ketu for Scorpio, Saturn and Rahu for Aquarius — take their length from whichever of the two lords is stronger. The strength rules are precise, and they are the most common reason two chara dasha tables for the same chart disagree.

The Levels

Chara Dasha Antardashas and Below

Each sign mahadasha is divided into twelve antardashas, one for every sign, of equal length. In the method most Jaimini astrologers follow, the antardashas begin with the sign after the mahadasha sign and end with the mahadasha sign itself, so the sign that runs the period gets the last word. Each antardasha divides again into twelve, and so on down to pran.

Because every level names a sign, the reading stays in one language all the way down. A Libra mahadasha with a Leo antardasha asks two questions: what does Libra hold in this chart, and what does Leo add? When both signs point at the same matter — both holding or aspecting the marriage karaka, say — that antardasha is where the event is looked for.

An example. Suppose the Darakaraka sits in Libra and Leo aspects Libra by rashi drishti. A Libra Mahadasha → Leo Antardasha joins the sign holding the spouse karaka to a sign that sees it, and is a strong window for marriage. A Libra Mahadasha → Pisces Antardasha, with Pisces neither holding nor seeing the Darakaraka, is far weaker for the same matter.

Interpretation

How to Read a Chara Dasha Sign

The working rule is simple to state: while a sign runs its period, read it as though it were your ascendant. The planets inside it colour the years. The chara karakas inside it name the people and themes that come forward — the Atmakaraka for the self, the Amatyakaraka for work, the Darakaraka for the spouse. The signs aspecting it by Jaimini rashi drishti add their own influence, and the houses counted from it show which areas of life are lit up.

Jaimini aspects are what make this reading different. A movable sign aspects every fixed sign except the one next to it; a fixed sign aspects every movable sign except the one next to it; and the dual signs aspect each other. So a dasha sign can be seen by three signs full of planets, or by none, and the difference between those two periods is usually easy to feel.

  1. Planets in the SignThe strongest colour on the period — what sits in the dasha sign comes forward.
  2. Karakas in the SignWhich person or theme the years revolve around, from the self to career to the spouse.
  3. Signs Aspecting ItJaimini rashi drishti — the planets in those signs lend their results to the period.
  4. Houses From the SignCounted from the dasha sign as a lagna, they show which areas of life are switched on.

Putting It to Work

Timing Marriage and Career With Chara Dasha

For marriage, Jaimini looks to the Darakaraka and the Upapada Lagna. A chara dasha period of the sign holding the Darakaraka, of the sign of the Upapada, or of a sign that aspects either, is a natural window. The 7th sign from the dasha sign is checked as well, because the dasha sign acts as a lagna and its 7th holds the partner for those years.

For career, the Amatyakaraka and the 10th from the dasha sign lead. A period of the sign holding the Amatyakaraka, or of a sign whose 10th is strongly occupied, tends to bring a new role, a change of employer or a step up. The Arudha Lagna adds the public side — a period that activates the Arudha often brings recognition that others can see.

None of these is read in isolation. The mahadasha sets the stage, the antardasha picks the part of it that comes forward, and the two together narrow the window to a year or less.

Two Clocks

Chara Dasha and Vimshottari Together

Chara dasha is not a replacement for the Vimshottari. The two measure time in different units — planets and nakshatras on one side, signs and karakas on the other — and an event that both point to at the same time is one an astrologer can speak about with confidence. When they disagree, the disagreement itself is useful: it usually means the matter is promised but its timing is not yet settled.

Your Vimshottari dasha sits in the same dashboard, worked on the same Vedic ayanamsa, so the two can be laid side by side for any year of your life.

Questions

Chara Dasha — Common Questions

Chara dasha is the main timing system of Jaimini astrology. Instead of giving each period to a planet, as the Vimshottari does, it gives each period to a sign. Every sign of the zodiac runs a mahadasha in turn, and what that period brings is read from the sign itself — the planets in it, the karakas it holds and the signs aspecting it.

Vimshottari is planet-based and starts from the Moon's nakshatra; chara dasha is sign-based and starts from the ascendant. Vimshottari periods have fixed lengths for each planet, while a chara dasha period depends on where the sign's lord sits in your chart, so the same sign can run for one year in one chart and eleven in another. Most Jaimini astrologers read the two side by side.

Between one and twelve years. The length is found by counting from the dasha sign to the sign occupied by its lord — forward for some signs, backward for others — and taking one away. When the lord sits in its own sign the period is twelve years. Scorpio and Aquarius each have two lords, and the stronger of the two is used.

Chara dasha moves in one of two directions. For some ascendants the sequence runs forward through the signs, for others it runs in reverse. The direction is fixed at birth by the nature of the signs involved and stays the same for the whole cycle, so a reverse sequence is not an error.

Each sign mahadasha is divided into twelve sign sub-periods of equal length. In the widely followed method the sub-periods begin with the sign after the mahadasha sign, and the mahadasha sign's own sub-period comes last. The dashboard opens any mahadasha to show them, and each of those down to pran.

Treat the dasha sign as a temporary ascendant. Look at the planets in it, which chara karakas it holds, which signs aspect it by Jaimini rashi drishti, and the houses counted from it. A dasha sign holding the Darakaraka or aspecting the Upapada often brings marriage; one holding the Amatyakaraka often brings a turn in career.

Yes. The full chara dasha from mahadasha down to pran, with every level named by its sign, is free, with nothing held back behind a payment.
