Your Arudha Lagna Is the Face the World Sees

Your ascendant describes who you are. The Arudha Lagna describes who people think you are — and in daily life the two are rarely the same. Jaimini called the arudha a reflection: the lagna seen in the mirror of the world, carrying the name, status and reputation that others attach to you. Classical texts link it with maya, the appearance of things, which is why it is read for fame, visible wealth and standing rather than for character. Every house has such a reflection, so a chart holds twelve arudha padas, from A1 to A12. This calculator finds your Arudha Lagna and all twelve padas from your birth details.

The Reflection

What the Arudha Lagna Shows

An arudha is literally what "mounts" or rises up — the image a thing projects. Jaimini's insight was that every area of life has two faces: what it is, and what it looks like. The houses of the birth chart describe the first. The arudha padas describe the second.

The Arudha Lagna, the pada of the first house, is the most important of them, because it carries the image of the whole person. It shows the status you are given, the circles you are seen in, the wealth others assume you have, and the kind of reputation that follows you. A strong Arudha Lagna can make a person well known far beyond what their lagna alone would promise; a troubled one can leave real ability unrecognised.

Because the arudha deals with appearance, astrologers use it for exactly the questions where appearance matters: public life, fame, social standing, and how the world responds to you.

The Method

How to Calculate the Arudha Lagna

The rule is short. Find the sign your lagna lord occupies and count how many signs it stands from the lagna, counting the lagna itself as one. Then count the same number again, starting from the lord. The sign you reach is your Arudha Lagna.

Take a Virgo ascendant with its lord Mercury in Aries. Aries is the 8th sign from Virgo. Counting eight signs on from Aries lands in Scorpio, so the Arudha Lagna is Scorpio. The same method, applied to each house and its lord, gives the other eleven padas.

Two exception rules are widely followed. If the count lands back in the house itself, the 10th sign from that house is taken instead. If it lands in the 7th sign from the house, the 4th from the house is taken. Not every school accepts these rules — the difference matters most for the Upapada, as explained below.

Lords of Scorpio and Aquarius. This calculator uses the standard Parashari sign lords — Mars for Scorpio and Saturn for Aquarius — without bringing in Ketu or Rahu as co-lords.

Interpretation

Reading the Arudha Lagna

Start with the sign and the planets in it. Planets standing in the Arudha Lagna colour your image directly: Jupiter lends respect and a reputation for wisdom, Venus charm and a comfortable appearance, the Sun authority, Saturn seriousness and a reputation built slowly, Rahu an image that is striking and sometimes larger than the reality.

Then read the houses counted from the Arudha Lagna, just as you would from the lagna. Jaimini gives particular weight to a few of them:

  1. The 11th From the ALGains and income as they flow in. Planets here, and aspects to it, show how easily money and support arrive.
  2. The 12th From the ALExpenses and losses. Benefics here spend on good causes; malefics point to drains that are hard to control.
  3. The 3rd and 6th From the ALMalefics here are welcome — they give the courage and the edge to hold your position against rivals.
  4. The 7th From the ALThe people you deal with and how your dealings with them look from outside.

Two Charts in One

Lagna and Arudha: Reality and Image

The most useful way to read the Arudha Lagna is side by side with the lagna. The lagna shows what is true; the arudha shows what is believed. When the two agree — the Arudha Lagna in a kendra or trikona from the lagna, and their lords on good terms — the image and the person match, and reputation tends to reflect real merit.

When they fall in the 6th, 8th or 12th from each other, the image and the reality pull apart. Such people are often misjudged, for better or worse: underestimated despite real ability, or credited with more than they have. Knowing which way the gap runs is one of the practical uses of the arudha.

A12

The Upapada and the Two Schools

The arudha of the 12th house, the Upapada Lagna, is read for marriage — the partnership itself, the spouse's family and how the marriage holds. It is the pada where the schools differ most. The standard exception rules move it when it lands in the 12th house or the 7th from it; K.N. Rao applies no exceptions and keeps the straight count.

For many charts the two methods agree. Where they do not, this calculator shows the standard Upapada with the K.N. Rao sign beside it, so you can see both. The full marriage reading from the Upapada has its own page.

Questions

Arudha Lagna — Common Questions

The Arudha Lagna, also called the Pada Lagna or A1, is the arudha of your ascendant. Where the lagna shows who you are, the Arudha Lagna shows how you appear — the image, status and reputation the world attaches to you. Jaimini astrologers read it for fame, wealth as others see it, and the way life presents itself from the outside.

Find the sign your lagna lord occupies and count how many signs it is from the lagna. Count the same number again from the lord. The sign you reach is the Arudha Lagna. If it lands in the lagna itself, take the 10th sign from it; if it lands in the 7th from the lagna, take the 4th from the lagna. The calculator does this for all twelve houses from your birth details.

Every house has an arudha, worked out the same way from that house and its lord. They run from A1, the Arudha Lagna, to A12, the Upapada Lagna. Each shows how the matters of its house appear to the world: A2 your wealth as others see it, A7 your partnerships, A10 your career and standing, A11 your gains, and so on.

The lagna is the reality — your body, nature and actual life. The Arudha Lagna is the perception — what people believe about you and the status you are given. The two can differ widely: a person can be modest by nature and still be seen as powerful, or wealthy in fact and still be thought of as ordinary. Reading both together shows where the image and the reality part ways.

Astrologers differ on the exception rules used for the arudhas. The standard rules move a pada that lands in its own house or the 7th from it. K.N. Rao applies no exceptions to the Upapada. Where the two methods give different signs, the calculator shows the standard Upapada with the K.N. Rao sign beside it, so you can see both.

The arudha padas are built from sign positions, so they change only when the lagna or a house lord moves into another sign. A few minutes of error rarely matters, but if your lagna is near the end of a sign, a small change of time can shift the Arudha Lagna and every pada with it.

Yes. Your Arudha Lagna, the planets in it, your lagna and its lord, your Upapada and the full table of all twelve arudha padas are free, with nothing held back behind a payment.
