Panchak 2026
Once in every lunar month, for about four and a half days, the Moon runs through the last five nakshatras of the zodiac. Those days are Panchak, and this page gives every Panchak of 2026 with the exact time it begins and ends.
Panchak begins when the Moon enters the second half of Dhanishtha, at the start of Aquarius, and ends when it leaves Revati at the end of Pisces. In between lie Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada and Uttara Bhadrapada. The word itself means "the five", for these five nakshatras.
The old rule is simple: whatever is begun in Panchak tends to be repeated five times. That is why the texts keep out of it the kinds of work one would not want to repeat, such as storing fuel, which invites fire, or a cremation without its proper rites. For most of daily life, Panchak changes nothing.
The Five Kinds
The weekday on which Panchak begins decides its nature for that month.
| Begins On | Panchak | What It Brings |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Roga Panchak | Health troubles; care with illness |
| Monday | Raja Panchak | Favourable for government work and property |
| Tuesday | Agni Panchak | Risk of fire; avoid work with fire and machinery |
| Wednesday | Dosha-Free | No special dosha |
| Thursday | Dosha-Free | No special dosha |
| Friday | Chor Panchak | Risk of theft and loss; avoid travel with valuables |
| Saturday | Mrityu Panchak | The gravest; avoid risky work and long journeys |
In Practice
People often panic when they hear the word Panchak. There is no need. I check it for five things only: laying a roof, building or buying a bed, storing wood or fuel, setting out on a journey to the south, and the last rites. Everything else, a puja, a purchase, an interview, goes ahead on its own muhurat.
The type matters more than the name. A Mrityu Panchak beginning on a Saturday I treat with real caution for travel and risky work; a Panchak beginning on a Wednesday or Thursday I hardly treat as Panchak at all. And when a death falls in Panchak, the family should not delay the cremation; the Panchak shanti with five kusha effigies is the remedy the texts give.
No roof laid, no bed or cot made in Panchak.
Wood, grass and fuel are not stored.
Journeys to the south are put off.
Done with Panchak shanti, never delayed.
Questions
The four and a half days or so each month when the Moon passes through the last five nakshatras: the second half of Dhanishtha, then Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. The Moon is then in Aquarius and Pisces. Certain kinds of work are kept out of these days.
By the weekday on which it begins. A Panchak starting on Sunday is Roga Panchak, on Monday Raja Panchak, on Tuesday Agni Panchak, on Friday Chor Panchak and on Saturday Mrityu Panchak. One starting on Wednesday or Thursday carries no special dosha.
No. Raja Panchak, which begins on a Monday, is held favourable for government work and property, and a Panchak beginning on Wednesday or Thursday is dosha-free. The five things traditionally avoided in every Panchak still apply.
Storing wood, grass or fuel, laying a roof, making a bed or cot, travelling south, and cremation without the prescribed rites. Ordinary work, worship and travel in other directions go on as usual.
The cremation is not stopped. The family performs it with Panchak shanti, in which five small effigies of kusha grass are cremated along with the body, as the texts prescribe. A priest guides the rite.
Panchak begins and ends at the same instant everywhere; only the clock time changes with your time zone. In India it is the same for every city. Pick your own city above if you are abroad.
