The Hindu Festival Calendar, and Why Its Dates Move
Every Hindu festival is tied to a tithi, a lunar day, and not to a date of the solar calendar. This page gives the festivals and vrats of 2026 worked out for your own city, from the major festivals down to each Pradosh and Sankashti.
A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain twelve degrees on the Sun. It can begin at any hour, run for nineteen hours or for twenty-six, and it rarely lines up with a calendar day. So the real question behind every festival date is which tithi is in force at the moment that festival needs: sunrise for most vrats, midday for some, dusk for others, midnight for a few.
In 2026 there is one more twist. An Adhik Jyeshtha, an extra lunar month, runs from 17 May to 15 June. No major festival is kept in an Adhik month, and every festival after it comes about three weeks later than last year, which is why the festivals of the second half of 2026 fall so late.

How the Date Is Fixed
Which Time of Day Decides a Festival
The tithi has to be running at a particular moment of the day. That moment differs from festival to festival.
| Moment | Festivals |
|---|---|
| Sunrise (Udaya) | Ekadashi and most vrats |
| Morning (Purvahna) | Akshaya Tritiya, Vasant Panchami |
| Midday (Madhyahna) | Ganesh Chaturthi, Ram Navami |
| Dusk (Pradosh) | Pradosh Vrat, Holika Dahan, Lakshmi Puja on Diwali, Dhanteras |
| Midnight (Nishita) | Krishna Janmashtami, Maha Shivratri |
| Moonrise | Karva Chauth, Sankashti Chaturthi |
| Afternoon (Aparahna) | Shraddha days, Dussehra, Raksha Bandhan |
In Practice
How I Settle a Festival Date When Calendars Disagree
Every year people ask me why their family calendar shows Janmashtami or Diwali on one day and the television on another. Usually neither is wrong. One calendar was made for a different city, or follows the Vaishnava rule instead of the Smarta one, or simply took the tithi at sunrise where the festival needs it at midnight.
My rule is plain: take the calendar made for the place where you live, and check the moment the festival needs. For a vrat, the tithi at sunrise. For Lakshmi Puja, the Amavasya at dusk. For Janmashtami, the Ashtami at midnight. Once you know that, the two dates stop being a puzzle, and the family can keep the festival on the right day without an argument.
Your City
Sunrise and moonrise change the date, so use your own place.
The Right Moment
Sunrise, midday, dusk or midnight, as the festival needs.
Your Tradition
Smarta and Vaishnava can differ by a day.
Adhik Maas
No major festival is kept in the extra month.
Questions
Hindu Festivals: Common Questions
Hindu festivals follow the lunar calendar, set by tithis, while the everyday calendar follows the Sun. Twelve lunar months come about eleven days short of a solar year, so a festival moves back by around eleven days each year, until an Adhik Maas, the extra month added roughly every third year, pulls it forward again.
Each festival is tied to a tithi and to a time of day. Most vrats take the tithi that is running at sunrise. Some need the tithi at midday, like Ganesh Chaturthi and Ram Navami; some at dusk, like Pradosh Vrat and Lakshmi Puja on Diwali; some at midnight, like Janmashtami and Maha Shivratri; and Karva Chauth and Sankashti need it at moonrise.
Mostly, but not always. Sunrise, sunset and moonrise differ from city to city, and when a tithi changes close to one of those moments, two cities can keep the same festival on different days. Outside India the difference is common. Pick your own city above to see the dates for it.
A tithi that begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, so it never touches a sunrise at all. A festival on such a tithi is kept on the day the tithi begins.
They are two traditions that sometimes keep the same festival on different days. Smarta households follow the general rule for the tithi; Vaishnava households, who follow the ISKCON and similar calendars, often keep Janmashtami, Ram Navami and Ekadashi a day later when the tithis overlap. Where the two differ, both dates are shown.
The dates are the same in both. Only the name of the month around a festival can differ: the Purnimant calendar of North India starts a month after the full moon, the Amant calendar of the South and West after the new moon. Month names on this page follow the Purnimant calendar.
