Purnima 2026
Once a month the Moon stands opposite the Sun and shines in full. That day is Purnima, and this page gives every Purnima of 2026 for your city, with the time it begins and ends, the day of the vrat and the night of the exact full moon.
In the panchang Purnima is the fifteenth tithi of Shukla Paksha. The months themselves take their names from it: Chaitra is the month whose full moon falls in Chitra nakshatra, Kartik the one in Krittika, Magha the one in Magha. So almost every Purnima carries a festival of its own, from Holi in Phalguna to Guru Purnima in Ashadha, Raksha Bandhan in Shravana and Sharad Purnima in Ashwin.
The Moon is the karaka of the mind, and on Purnima it is at its strongest. That is why the day is kept with a fast, a holy dip, the Satyanarayan katha and charity, and why an offering of water to the Moon at night is held to calm the mind and steady the emotions.
Darsha and Udaya
The full moon is an instant, but a calendar day runs from sunrise to sunrise. When Purnima begins in the morning and ends before the next sunrise, the day it holds at sunrise and the day of the exact full moon are not always the same.
The vrat, the holy dip and charity follow the udaya tithi, the Purnima at sunrise. When Purnima holds two sunrises, the vrat is kept on the second; when it holds none, on the day it begins. The exact full moon, the Darsha Purnima, is the night for gazing at the Moon. This page shows both days whenever they differ.
Purnima at sunrise: the day of vrat, snan and daan.
The night of the exact full moon.
Purnima at two sunrises: the vrat on the second day.
Purnima at no sunrise: kept on the day it begins.

In Practice
When the Moon is weak in a chart, combust, in Scorpio or held by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, the mind is usually the first to suffer: worry, sleeplessness, sudden changes of mood. For such people I suggest the Purnima vrat before any gemstone. Fast till moonrise, then offer water with a little milk and white flowers to the Moon and eat after that. Done month after month, it works quietly and well.
Purnima is also a good day for what Amavasya is not: worship, a new spiritual practice, charity given with joy. Many families hold the Satyanarayan katha on this day for that reason, and I would keep a Purnima for any puja that is meant to bring peace into the home.
A holy dip or bath with Ganga jal, then charity.
A fast, or fruit and milk, with Vishnu's name.
Arghya to the Moon with water, milk and white flowers.
The Satyanarayan katha, kept by many families each Purnima.
Questions
The full moon: the fifteenth tithi of the bright half, Shukla Paksha, when the Moon stands opposite the Sun and shines in full. In the Purnimanta calendar of North India each month ends on Purnima and takes its name from the nakshatra the Moon holds that night.
Because two moments matter. The vrat, the holy dip and charity are kept on the day Purnima is running at sunrise. The exact full moon, the Darsha Purnima, can fall on the day before or after. When the two days differ, this page shows both.
When Purnima is present at two sunrises (vriddhi), the vrat is kept on the second day. When it touches no sunrise at all (kshaya), it is kept on the day it begins. Each case is marked on this page.
A holy dip in the morning, charity, the Satyanarayan katha in the home, and in the evening an offering of water, milk and white flowers to the Moon. Many keep a fast till moonrise.
Guru Purnima in Ashadha, Raksha Bandhan in Shravana, Sharad Purnima in Ashwin, Kartik Purnima with Dev Diwali, Buddha Purnima in Vaishakha and Holi Purnima in Phalguna are the best known.
The full moon happens at one instant everywhere, but the day it falls on depends on your time zone and your sunrise. Pick your own city at the top of this page.
