Jaimini Astrology Tools, and the System Behind Them
Jaimini astrology reads your birth chart through the chara karakas, the aspects of whole signs, the arudha padas and the periods of the signs. Every tool here works on those rules — your Atmakaraka and Karakamsha, the Jaimini charts, chara dasha, the Arudha and Upapada Lagna, argala, rashi drishti and the special lagnas — and the pages below explain how they fit together.

Each question in Jaimini has its own starting point. These are the ones astrologers turn to first.
Timing
How Jaimini Times an Event: Chara Dasha and the Signs
Parashari timing asks which planet's period is running. Jaimini asks which sign's. In chara dasha each of the twelve signs rules a period of one to twelve years, and when a sign's turn comes, it acts as a temporary ascendant: the planets in it, the karakas it holds and the signs that aspect it all come alive. A period sign holding the Darakaraka or aspecting the Upapada often brings marriage; one holding the Amatyakaraka often brings a turn in career.
- Chara DashaThe periods of the signs, mahadasha and antardasha.
- Chara KarakasThe roles the planets carry into each period.
- Rashi DrishtiThe signs that aspect the period sign and lend it their planets.
- ArgalaThe planets that hold up the period sign, or block it.
The Vocabulary
Key Jaimini Astrology Terms: Karaka, Arudha, Argala, Rashi Drishti
Eight terms carry almost every Jaimini reading. Knowing what each one decides makes your own results readable.
Chara Karaka
A role a planet takes from its degree in its sign. The seven karakas change from chart to chart, unlike the fixed karakas of Parashari astrology.
Atmakaraka
The planet with the highest degree — the king of the chart and the voice of the soul. Every Jaimini reading begins with it.
Karakamsha
The Navamsa sign of the Atmakaraka, used as an ascendant for work, skills and the soul's direction.
Arudha Pada
The image of a house — how it appears to the world. The Arudha Lagna is the image of the self.
Upapada Lagna
The arudha of the 12th house, read for the marriage itself and whether it continues.
Rashi Drishti
The aspect of one sign on another. Planets share the aspects of their sign, and the aspect always works both ways.
Argala
The intervention of planets on a house from the 2nd, 4th, 11th and 5th — holding it up, unless blocked from the opposite side.
Chara Dasha
The periods of the signs, each lasting one to twelve years, in an order set by the lagna.
The System
What Jaimini Astrology Is, and How It Differs From Parashari
The Jaimini Sutras are among the oldest texts of Jyotish — terse, coded verses that astrologers have been unpacking for centuries.
They work on the same birth chart as Parashara but change almost every rule of reading it. Roles come from degrees rather than lordship, so the same planet can be the soul in one chart and the spouse in another. Signs, not planets, cast the aspects. Every house has an arudha that shows how it appears to others. And time runs through the signs themselves. Used beside Parashari astrology, Jaimini often answers what the other leaves unclear — especially about marriage, status and the direction of a life.
Degrees, Not Lordship
A planet's role comes from how far it has travelled in its sign.
Signs Aspect Signs
Whole signs look at each other, and every planet shares its sign's aspects.
Image and Reality
The arudhas show how each part of life appears, beside what it is.
Periods of Signs
Chara dasha times events by signs, bringing their planets forward together.
Questions
Jaimini Astrology — Common Questions
A system of Vedic astrology taught in the Jaimini Sutras, attributed to Maharishi Jaimini, a disciple of Vyasa. It uses the same birth chart as Parashari astrology but reads it by its own rules: planets take roles from their degrees as chara karakas, signs aspect whole signs, each house has an arudha or image, and time runs through the periods of the signs in chara dasha.
Parashari gives each planet its role through the houses it rules and reads time through the Vimshottari dasha of the planets. Jaimini gives each planet a role by its degree — the most advanced becomes the Atmakaraka — lets signs rather than planets cast aspects, and times events through sign-based dashas. Most astrologers use the two together, each checking the other.
The planet with the highest degree in its sign, whatever the sign. It is the king of the Jaimini chart and stands for the soul — its desires, its lesson and the direction it is set in. Its Navamsa sign becomes the Karakamsha.
The main dasha of the Jaimini system. Instead of planetary periods, each of the twelve signs rules a period of one to twelve years, in an order that depends on the lagna. The planets in a period sign, and the signs aspecting it, bring their results in that period.
Yes, and it is one of its strengths. The Darakaraka describes the spouse, the Upapada Lagna shows the marriage itself and whether it lasts, and the chara dasha of signs linked to them often times the wedding.
Yes. The chara karakas, the Atmakaraka and Karakamsha readings, the Jaimini charts, the chara dasha, the arudha padas, argala, rashi drishti and the special lagnas are all free, with nothing held back behind a payment.
