Argala Shows Which Parts of Your Life Are Held Up

A house in your chart does not act alone. Planets standing in certain houses around it lean on it — supporting it, locking its results in place, or pulling it in their own direction. Maharishi Jaimini called this argala, the bolt that holds a door shut, and set against it the virodha argala, the force that works it loose. Reading the two together tells you which areas of life have real backing behind them and which are left exposed. This calculator works out the argala and virodha argala on every house of your chart and shows which ones hold.

The Bolt on the Door

What Argala Means

In the Jaimini Sutras, argala describes how planets intervene in the affairs of a house they do not occupy. The picture is of a door held by a bolt: the house is the door, and the planets in the argala positions are the bolt that keeps it steady. A house with firm argala holds its results — its wealth stays, its relationships last, its work carries on. A house without it is more easily shaken.

Argala is also the channel through which one area of life feeds another. Planets in the 2nd from the 10th, for example, bring resources into your career; planets in the 4th from the 7th give the marriage a settled base. That is why Jaimini astrologers read argala before judging any house on its own merits.

Primary and Secondary

The Four Kinds of Argala

Argala is counted from the house being judged. Three positions give primary argala and one gives secondary argala, each named for what it adds.

The Counter-Force

Virodha Argala: What Blocks It

Every argala has an opposite point from which it can be obstructed. Planets there push against the bolt; if they are stronger, the argala fails and the house loses that support.

  1. The 12th Blocks the 2ndExpense and loss work against resources.
  2. The 10th Blocks the 4thThe demands of work pull against home and comfort.
  3. The 3rd Blocks the 11thEffort and rivalry work against easy gains.
  4. The 9th Blocks the 5thFortune and belief can override personal judgement.

The Balance

How to Judge Which Side Wins

The rule in the texts is straightforward: compare the argala house with its virodha house. The side with more planets prevails. If the argala house holds two planets and the virodha house one, the argala works, though less cleanly than if the virodha house were empty. If the virodha side has as many planets or more, the argala is blocked.

When the counts are level, astrologers weigh the planets themselves — a strong, well-placed planet outweighs a weak one. An empty argala house gives no argala at all, whatever sits opposite it.

Unobstructed argala is the strongest. An argala with no planet at all in its virodha house works fully. Houses with several such argalas are the ones in your chart that have the most support behind them.

Putting It to Use

Reading Argala House by House

Start with the lagna. Strong argala on the first house means a life with backing — people, resources and circumstances that keep you steady. Then turn to the house your question is about: the 7th for marriage and partnership, the 10th for career, the 4th for home and property, the 2nd for family wealth.

The planets giving the argala matter as much as the count. Benefics hold a house up gently, through help and good fortune; malefics hold it up through effort, competition or force. Jaimini astrologers also read argala on the Arudha Lagna, for how firmly your standing in the world is held, and on the Karakamsha, for how well the soul's direction is supported.

Finer Points

Special Cases the Texts Mention

Two refinements appear in the classical commentaries. The first concerns the 3rd house: three or more malefics there are said to create an argala of their own, the vipreet argala, rather than merely obstructing the 11th. The second concerns the nodes: some traditions count the argala of Rahu and Ketu in reverse, because the nodes move backwards through the zodiac.

This calculator follows the core rule — the four argala houses and their four virodha houses — and counts every planet, the nodes included, in the same direction. Where your chart has three malefics in a 3rd house, or where the nodes decide a close balance, an astrologer can weigh the finer rule.

He checks the argala on a house before promising any result from it — a well-placed house with no argala often delivers less than it seems to promise.

Questions

Argala — Common Questions

Argala means a bolt or a latch — something that holds a door in place. In Jaimini astrology it is the intervention of planets on a house: planets in the 2nd, 4th and 11th from a house, and in the 5th as a secondary argala, hold that house up and shape its results. A house with strong argala has support behind it; one with none is left to its own resources.

Virodha argala is the counter-force. Planets in the 12th from a house obstruct the argala from the 2nd, the 10th obstructs the 4th, the 3rd obstructs the 11th and the 9th obstructs the 5th. When the obstructing side is stronger, the argala is blocked; when the argala side is stronger, it prevails.

The simplest test is the number of planets on each side: the side with more planets wins. When the numbers are equal, astrologers compare the strength of the planets themselves. The calculator marks each argala as working, blocked or empty, and gives each house an overall strength from Very Strong down to None.

Yes. Any planet in an argala house intervenes in the house it looks at. Benefics give supportive argala — help, resources, protection — while malefics give argala that works through effort, struggle or force. Both hold the house; the flavour differs.

Classical texts add a special case: three or more malefics in the 3rd from a house create an argala of their own, called vipreet argala, instead of obstructing. The calculator reads the 3rd only as the house that obstructs the 11th, so charts with three malefics there are worth a second look by an astrologer.

The argala on the lagna shows how much support the person has in life as a whole. After that, astrologers look at the house the question is about — the 7th for marriage, the 10th for career, the 4th for home — and at the argala on the Arudha Lagna and the Karakamsha.

Yes. The argala on your lagna, the strength of all twelve houses and the full detail of each house — which argalas work, which are blocked and by which planets — are free.
