Government job in astrology: what a sarkari naukri yoga actually is

Every February and every September the same young people come to me with the same question, and they bring an admit card with them. Is a government job in my chart? They have usually sat the examination once already, sometimes three times, and what they want is not comfort — it is a straight answer about whether to keep going.

A birth chart gives one. Government service has a specific signature in Jyotish, and it is narrower than most people expect. It is not the Sun alone, and it is not a strong tenth house by itself. The reading rests on whether particular lords are actually joined — conjunct, mutually aspecting, or in exchange — and on what the Dasamsa (D10) and the Amatyakaraka confirm afterwards. A house merely seeing another house is not the same thing, and that one distinction explains most of the over-confident predictions in this field.

The government job yoga, stated properly

A sarkari naukri yoga is a connection between lords, not a mood in the chart. Two of them carry most of the weight, and your reading above tests both.

  1. The 11th lord with the 8th lordThe classical combination for settled, lifelong income — a salary that continues, a pension behind it, and the security that people actually mean when they say government job.
  2. The 10th lord with the 6th lord, or with the SunCareer joined to service under authority. Where the Sun is involved and strong, the post carries standing rather than only tenure.

Joined means something precise: conjunct in one house, in mutual aspect, in exchange of signs, or one placed in the other's house. What does not count is one lord aspecting the other's house while having nothing to do with the lord itself. The texts are clear about this and astrologers are often loose about it — which is why so many people are told they have a government yoga and then sit four examinations without result.

Your result names each connection as joined, lightly linked, or absent, and shows the exact way it is or is not made. Read that section before anything else on this page.

Which planets give sarkari naukri

Each of these shows a different kind of government service. Read them for your tenth lord and for whatever sits in your tenth house.

PlanetThe kind of postHow it comes
SunAdministration, civil services, any office with authority attachedBy merit and visibility; the person is noticed by seniors early
SaturnLong service, public works, labour, transport, railwaysLate, after repeated effort, and then held for a lifetime
MarsPolice, defence, engineering services, land and surveyThrough competitive examination and physical standards
JupiterTeaching, judiciary, finance ministries, advisory bodiesSteadily, in institutions with standing
MoonPublic dealing, health services, water and revenue departmentsThrough transfers and postings; movement is part of the job
MercuryAccounts, audit, clerical and statistical services, bankingBy written examination; such charts test well
RahuForeign departments, intelligence, unconventional routes inSuddenly, sometimes through a reserved or lateral channel

The Sun deserves a caution. A strong Sun inclines a person towards authority, but on its own it does not give the post — I have read many charts with an exalted Sun and no government connection at all, whose owners did very well in private authority instead.

The houses that carry government service

HouseStands forWhy it matters here
10thCareer, standing, the state itselfThe house of authority; the government is read as the ultimate employer
6thService, competition, examinationsClearing an examination is a sixth-house act before it is a tenth-house result
11thGains, fulfilment of wishesWhere a secure salary lands, and half of the first connection above
8thWhat comes without being earned afresh — pension, tenure, legacyThe other half of that connection, and the reason government service reads differently from private
9thFortune, law, higher authoritySupports the reading; strong with the 10th it lifts an ordinary post into a respected one

The eighth house surprises people. It is not only difficulty — it is also what continues without fresh effort, which is exactly what a pensioned post is. That is why the eleventh-with-eighth connection is the older and stronger of the two indications.

Dasamsa and Amatyakaraka: the confirmation

The birth chart indicates; the divisional chart delivers. For any career question the second chart to open is the Dasamsa (D10), and for a government post the questions are specific: is the Sun or Saturn strong in it, does its tenth house carry a benefic, and where has the birth-chart tenth lord landed inside it?

The Amatyakaraka gives a second, independent opinion, because Jaimini finds it by degree rather than by lordship. Where the Amatyakaraka is the Sun or Saturn and the connections above are present, a government career is as well supported as a chart can show it. Where the Amatyakaraka points elsewhere while the connections hold, people often enter service and then build their real reputation on something adjacent to it.

When will I clear the exam? Reading the dasha

This is the question behind the question, and it is answered from the periods rather than from the yoga. A chart with a clear government connection still needs a dasha that opens the door.

  1. Sit the examination in a supporting periodA mahadasha or antardasha whose lords connect to the 10th, 6th or 11th house. Attempts made outside such a period cost the same effort and return less.
  2. Watch the 6th house for the resultCompetition is a sixth-house matter. A period touching the 6th with a benefic is when a merit list actually turns your way.
  3. Jupiter and Saturn on the 10thThe double transit is the classical confirmation for an appointment — Jupiter opens it, Saturn makes it stick.
  4. Avoid deciding in a 12th-periodLoss and expenditure run high; that is the stretch where people abandon preparation a year before it would have paid.

Your own windows are in the job timing reading and in the Vimshottari dasha, both from this same chart.

If the chart does not support it

Said plainly, because a young person deserves plain speech. A chart without these connections does not forbid a government post — people with such charts clear examinations every year. What it says is that the road will be longer: more attempts, preparation carried on your own strength rather than on an easy opening, and a stretch where nothing appears to move.

What I tell such a candidate is this. Give it a defined number of attempts rather than an open-ended vow. Keep other work in hand while you prepare — the sixth house does not object to that, and it pays the bills. And read the same chart for what it does support, because it usually supports something well; a person fighting their own chart for six years is the saddest thing I see in this practice.

Remedies while you are preparing

These strengthen the planets that carry government service. They are aids to a candidate who is already working, not substitutes for the work.

  • Surya Arghya at sunrise — water offered to the Sun daily, the oldest observance for authority and recognition. Steadiness matters more than quantity.
  • Aditya Hridaya Stotra — where the Sun is weak or afflicted, particularly on Sundays.
  • Saturn's discipline — service to workers and elders, punctuality, and Saturday observance. Saturn is the graha of employment and answers to conduct rather than to ritual.
  • Attention to the running dasha lord — the most useful remedy of all is to strengthen the planet whose period you are actually in, which your dasha reading names.

Skip the gemstones until a competent astrologer has read the whole chart. A stone for the wrong planet can make an already difficult preparation harder.

How far this reading can be trusted

It tells you whether the classical connections are present, how firmly, and what the Dasamsa and Amatyakaraka add. That is a real answer to a real question, and it is given the same way at my table. What it cannot tell you is which department, which rank, or which attempt — and any astrologer who names those is guessing with confidence.

The placements here come from the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa, computed for your exact birth minute. The house-based part depends on that minute: the ascendant moves every two hours, and the Dasamsa changes every few minutes, so a doubtful birth time should be rectified before anybody reorganises their twenties around this reading.

The government-job reading on this page follows the order he uses at the table — the two connections first, then the Dasamsa, then the periods.

Questions

Government job astrology — the questions people ask

It is read from two connections. The 11th lord joined with the 8th lord gives settled, lifelong income; the 10th lord joined with the 6th lord or with the Sun gives service under authority. Joined means conjunct, in mutual aspect, in exchange, or one placed in the other's house — an aspect on a house alone does not count.

The classical sarkari naukri yogas are the 11th–8th lord connection and the 10th–6th or 10th–Sun connection, supported by a strong Sun or Saturn and confirmed in the Dasamsa. A single strong planet without these connections does not make the yoga.

The Sun for administration and authority, Saturn for long service and public works, Mars for police and defence, Mercury for accounts and written examinations, Jupiter for teaching and judiciary. The planet decides the department; the connections decide whether the post comes at all.

Yes. People clear examinations every year with charts that carry no such connection. What the chart is saying is that the road will take longer — more attempts and preparation carried on your own strength. Give it a defined number of attempts and keep other work in hand while you prepare.

Sit the examination in a mahadasha or antardasha whose lords connect to the 10th, 6th or 11th house, and watch for Jupiter and Saturn touching the 10th house together. Attempts made outside such periods cost the same effort and return less.

No, and this is the commonest over-reading in the field. A strong Sun inclines a person towards authority, which is often exercised in private life instead. Without the lord connections there is no government yoga to speak of.

The D10 is the divisional chart of career. For this question it is read for the strength of the Sun and Saturn in it, for a benefic in its tenth house, and for where the birth-chart tenth lord has landed. A promise in the birth chart that thins out in the D10 is the commonest reason a strong-looking chart underperforms.

Yes. The connections are read from house lords, and the ascendant changes every two hours, so an hour's error can change which planet owns which house. The Dasamsa is stricter still — a D10 division lasts only a few minutes of clock time.
