Why a job arrives in one year and not in another

Two people apply for the same kind of work with the same qualifications. One is placed in six weeks; the other sends applications for two years and hears nothing. Effort explains part of it. The rest is timing, and timing in Jyotish has a name — the dasha you are running.

A birth chart holds the promise of work. It does not hand it over at a time of your choosing. The promise becomes an offer when the running period belongs to a planet connected to your tenth house of career, your sixth of employment and service, or your eleventh of gains — and when a transit walks through the door that period opens. Get those two lined up and a job appears with almost no resistance. Miss them and the same effort produces interviews that go nowhere.

Which houses have to be involved

A job is not read from the tenth house alone. Four houses share the work between them, and a period that touches two or three of them is what actually produces an appointment letter.

HouseWhat it carriesWhy it matters for a job
10thCareer, standing, the work you are known forThe house of the profession itself — nothing moves far without it
6thService, daily work, competition, employment under someoneThe specific house of a job, as opposed to a business; also of clearing competition
11thGains, income, fulfilment of wishesA period touching the 11th is when the effort converts into money
2ndEarning, savings, sustenanceSupports the 11th; a job that pays properly usually has this house in the picture

Notice the sixth house on that list. People treat it as a difficult house and it is — but it is also the house of employment, and a well-timed sixth-house period is the commonest reason a long search suddenly ends. For a government post, add the Sun and the tenth lord's dignity to the reading; for private work, Mercury and the eleventh carry more weight.

How a job period is identified

The rule is stricter than most people expect, and it is why the calculator marks only a handful of windows instead of listing every period.

  1. Both lords must connectThe mahadasha lord and the antardasha lord each need a link to the houses of work — by owning one, sitting in one, or aspecting one. A period where only one of the two connects tends to produce interviews rather than offers.
  2. The link has to be cleanA lord that connects to the 10th and also to the 8th or 12th gives work that starts and stops. Classical texts call this mixed signification; in practice it is the year of a job that does not survive its probation.
  3. Strength decides the sizeAn exalted or well-placed lord gives a post worth having. A debilitated or combust one gives employment, but small, and usually below what the person is trained for.
  4. The sub-period narrows it to monthsInside the antardasha, the pratyantardasha that also connects to the same houses is the actual window — a stretch of weeks rather than a year.

This is exactly what the calculator above does with your own chart: it finds the periods where both lords qualify and marks the months inside them where the connection is strongest.

The transit that confirms it

A dasha opens the door; a transit walks through it. The pairing every astrologer watches for employment is Jupiter and Saturn touching the tenth house or its lord — the double transit. Jupiter brings the opportunity and Saturn makes it stick, and when both aspect the tenth from the natal Moon or the ascendant during a qualifying dasha, that is when appointments actually happen.

Saturn deserves a word of its own here, because people fear it and should not. Saturn is the planet of employment. Its transits over the tenth, and its periods, are frequently when a person is placed — late, after effort, and in something that lasts. What Saturn does not give is a quick or glamorous entry. Jupiter's transit gives the opening; Saturn's gives the tenure.

Why nothing is moving despite the applications

This is the commonest question I am asked, usually by someone who is doing everything right. Four explanations cover almost all of it.

  • The running dasha has no link to the houses of work. Effort is not wasted — it accumulates — but it converts only when the clock reaches a qualifying period.
  • The antardasha belongs to the 6th, 8th or 12th lord with no support. These stretches bring obstacles, rejections at the last stage, and offers withdrawn. They pass.
  • Mixed signification. The lord connects both to the 10th and to a house of loss. Interviews come and end at the final round — a pattern people recognise immediately when it is described to them.
  • Saturn or Rahu is transiting the 10th or the 10th lord while the dasha is unrelated. Delay without direction; the transit alone cannot deliver what no period is offering.

None of these is a verdict on ability. They are timing, and timing changes on a known schedule — which is the whole reason to look at the periods rather than to keep rewriting the CV in the wrong year.

First job, and changing jobs — not the same combination

A first job usually comes in a period touching the tenth and the sixth, often with Mercury or the Moon involved for the interview itself, and frequently while the dasha of a planet in the second or eleventh runs — the chart wants earning to begin.

A change of job is a different signature. It shows when the antardasha lord connects the tenth to the third or the twelfth: movement, travel, leaving. A promotion within the same organisation reads differently again — the tenth with the eleventh, and no third or twelfth involvement at all. Knowing which of the three your period supports saves a good deal of misdirected effort: some years are for staying and being noticed, not for leaving.

What each dasha lord tends to bring

Read this for the mahadasha and antardasha lords the calculator marks in your own chart. The house connection decides whether a job comes; the planet decides what kind.

Dasha lordThe kind of opening it brings
SunGovernment, administration, a post with authority; recognition from seniors
MoonPublic-facing work, care, hospitality; quick changes and frequent movement
MarsTechnical, defence, engineering, property; fast placements after competitive exams
MercuryTrade, accounts, software, teaching; several interviews and a quick offer
JupiterAdvisory, finance, teaching, institutions; the offer is respectable and stable
VenusDesign, media, hospitality, anything with taste; comfortable conditions
SaturnEmployment that lasts — late, after effort, often after a long wait
RahuForeign postings, new industries, unconventional routes; sudden and large
KetuResearch, IT, work done alone; placements that arrive quietly and without fanfare

What to do while the window is still far off

This part matters more than the prediction, because most people who ask this question are somewhere in the waiting rather than at the door.

  1. QualifyPeriods that refuse employment often permit study. A degree, a certification or a licence taken in a quiet year is what makes the good year good.
  2. Take the intermediate workA stop-gap job during a weak period is not a failure of the chart. It keeps the sixth house occupied and, in my experience, is frequently where the real opening comes from.
  3. Prepare for the windowIf a qualifying period opens in fourteen months, that is when applications should be heaviest, not now. Plan the effort around the calendar the chart gives you.
  4. Give Saturn its dueDiscipline, punctuality, service to elders and to workers — Saturn's own currency. It is the classical remedy for employment, and it costs nothing.

Can astrology give an exact date for a job?

A window, not a date. The dasha narrows it to a period, the sub-period to a few months, and a transit to a likely stretch of weeks — and that is as far as honest practice goes. Anybody naming a day is guessing; the chart does not work at that resolution, and the world outside the chart has a say too.

What the window is worth is this: it tells you when to push and when to build. The periods here are computed from the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa for your exact birth minute, and they are only as accurate as that time. If your birth time is a family recollection rather than a record, treat the months as approximate and read the years instead — those hold up even with a rough time.

The timing on this page follows the test he applies at the table — both period lords must connect to the houses of work before a year counts.

Questions

Job timing — the questions people ask

When a dasha period runs whose mahadasha and antardasha lords both connect to your houses of work — the 10th, the 6th, the 11th or the 2nd — and a Jupiter or Saturn transit touches the 10th house during it. The calculator marks those periods for your own chart and the months inside them.

Usually because the running period has no link to the houses of work, or the antardasha belongs to the 6th, 8th or 12th lord without support. Effort in such a year accumulates rather than converts. It is a matter of timing, not of ability, and it changes on a schedule the chart can show you.

Four share it. The 10th is the profession, the 6th is employment and service under someone, the 11th brings the gains and the 2nd the earning. A period touching two or three of them is what produces an actual appointment.

Often, yes. Saturn is the planet of employment: its periods and its transits over the 10th frequently place a person — late, after effort, and in work that lasts. What Saturn does not give is a quick or effortless entry.

Jupiter and Saturn both aspecting the 10th house or its lord at the same time, counted from the ascendant or the natal Moon. During a qualifying dasha it is the strongest confirmation in classical practice that an appointment is at hand.

Yes. A first job comes with the 10th and 6th active, often with the 2nd or 11th supporting. A change shows when the period lord links the 10th to the 3rd or 12th — movement and leaving. A promotion inside the same organisation links the 10th to the 11th with no 3rd or 12th involvement at all.

No, and anybody offering one is guessing. The dasha narrows it to a period, the sub-period to a few months, and a transit to a likely stretch of weeks. That is the honest resolution — and it is enough to know when to push and when to prepare.

Qualify — periods that refuse employment often permit study. Take intermediate work rather than waiting empty-handed, since it keeps the 6th house occupied and frequently leads to the real opening. And save the heaviest applications for the window the chart actually opens.
