Job or business in astrology: what the chart can actually tell you

Somebody in their early thirties, four years into a decent job, sits across the table and asks the same question every week: should I do business or stay in service? They are rarely asking for permission. They are asking whether the thing they already suspect about themselves is written in the chart.

It usually is, and it is readable. A birth chart shows a leaning towards job or business through where the grahas gather, through the tenth lord and its house, through the strength of the sixth against the seventh and eleventh, and — in Krishnamurti Paddhati — through one narrow question put to the sub lord of the tenth cusp. This calculator runs both systems on your chart and keeps them apart, so you can see whether Parashari and KP agree before you decide anything.

Which houses decide job or business

Four houses carry this question between them. Read their lords, what sits in them and what aspects them, and the leaning appears without much argument.

HouseStands forWhat a strong one means here
6thService, daily work, competition, working under anotherThe single clearest marker of a salaried life — and of doing well in one
7thPartnership, clients, the open marketBusiness, dealings with the public, a firm of your own or with a partner
10thCareer, standing, what you are known forThe profession itself; its lord's house tells you where the work is spent
11thGains, income, fulfilment of wishesWhere profit lands. Strong with the 7th it supports business; strong with the 6th it supports a good salary

A common misreading: people treat the sixth house as bad because it is a dusthana. For the job-or-business question it is the opposite — a well-placed sixth lord is why some people quietly reach the top of an organisation while their friends struggle at their own ventures.

Yogas for a job: what a service chart looks like

These are the patterns I look for when somebody asks whether they should stay in service. None of them is a sentence; together they make a leaning.

  • The 10th lord in the 6th, or the 6th lord in the 10th — the classic service combination, and it shows up again and again in the charts of career employees.
  • Saturn connected with the 10th — Saturn is the graha of employment: long tenure, structure, promotion by seniority rather than by leap.
  • The Sun strong and tied to the 10th — government and administration; a chair with authority attached, inside a system.
  • A weak or afflicted 7th house — dealings with the open market cost such a chart more than they return.
  • Moon or Mercury with the 6th — routine work suits the mind; the person is steadier with a defined role than with an empty week.

A service chart is not a smaller chart. Some of the most successful people I read have never invoiced anybody in their lives — they rose inside institutions, which is exactly what their tenth and sixth houses promised.

Yogas for business: what a self-employed chart looks like

The business side of the question has its own signature, and the older texts are surprisingly specific about it.

  • The 10th lord in the 7th, or the 7th lord in the 10th — the classical marker for one's own firm, and for work that lives on clients.
  • A strong 11th with the 7th — gains arriving through dealings rather than through a salary. Uneven early, larger later.
  • Mercury strong, particularly with the 10th or 11th — trade, negotiation, margins; Mercury is the graha of the merchant.
  • Rahu with the 10th — unconventional routes, new industries, sudden expansion. Watch the same placement for overreach.
  • Grahas gathered between the 7th and the 12th houses — the pattern the Parashari block above tests, taken from a study of self-employed charts.

Two cautions I give every time. A business-leaning chart should still take a job in its first working decade — apprenticeship costs nothing and teaches the trade. And no chart should start a venture inside a period that has no link to the tenth or eleventh house, however strong the leaning.

The KP answer: sub lord of the 10th cusp

Krishnamurti Paddhati does not weigh yogas. It asks one question and takes the answer: what does the sub lord of the tenth cusp signify? If it signifies the sixth house, the reading is service. If it signifies the seventh, it is self-employment. If it signifies both, the person does both — and a surprising number of charts do.

KP uses the Krishnamurti ayanamsa and Placidus cusps, while Parashari here uses Lahiri and whole signs, so the two are computed separately and never averaged. That is deliberate. When both blocks in your result point the same way, you have a finding worth acting on. When they differ, the usual meaning is that a person earns through one route while being temperamentally suited to the other — which is worth knowing before you resign.

What each planet wants from work

Read this for your tenth lord and for any planet sitting in the tenth house. It will not decide job or business on its own, but it explains why a particular arrangement chafes.

PlanetLeansWhy
SunService, at the top of itWants authority conferred by a system rather than won in a market
MoonEither, changeablyFollows feeling; such people often move between the two more than once
MarsBusiness, or a technical serviceDislikes being managed; does well running a small, tight operation
MercuryBusinessThe merchant's graha — trade, margins, two things at once
JupiterService in advisory fieldsPrefers an institution with standing: teaching, law, finance
VenusEither, in pleasant conditionsWorks through people and taste; suffers in harsh settings of any kind
SaturnServiceThe graha of employment: tenure, process, slow and durable rise
RahuBusiness, unconventionalForeign trade, new industries, speed — with the volatility that comes with it
KetuSpecialist serviceResearch and depth; indifferent to selling, which business demands daily

When to leave a job and start a business

The leaning tells you what suits. The dasha tells you when to act, and this is where most people get hurt — not by choosing wrongly, but by choosing at the wrong time.

  1. Start inside a supporting periodA mahadasha or antardasha lord connected to the 10th, 7th or 11th. A venture begun outside such a period tends to consume savings and close quietly.
  2. Watch Saturn's transit over the 10thExcellent for consolidating in a job; hard for launching something that needs quick returns. Jupiter on the 10th or 11th is the friendlier window.
  3. Do not resign in a 12th-house periodLoss and expenditure run high; even a good idea arrives underfunded.
  4. Give it one full antardashaJudging a business in six months is judging a transit, not a venture. The chart works on periods, and so should you.

Your own windows are in the job timing reading and in the Vimshottari dasha, both computed from this same chart.

When the chart says both

It happens often, and it is not the calculator hedging. A tenth lord tied to the sixth with a strong eleventh, or a KP sub lord signifying six and seven together, describes a real and common working life: employed, with something of one's own running alongside.

In practice such charts do best by sequence rather than by simultaneity — the job first, the venture built quietly beside it, and the jump made in a period that supports the tenth house. Dual signs on the tenth cusp, and Mercury or Jupiter involved, strengthen that reading further.

How far to trust this reading

It gives a leaning and the reasons behind it, from two systems that were built independently. That is genuinely useful when you are weighing a decision and cannot see past the last bad quarter. What it does not do is name your industry, your co-founder or your salary, and any astrologer who does is guessing with confidence.

Both readings depend on your birth time. Parashari here uses the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses; KP uses the Krishnamurti ayanamsa with Placidus cusps, where even a few minutes can move a cuspal sub lord. If your time is a family recollection, read the Parashari block as the firmer of the two and have the chart rectified before acting on the KP answer.

Questions

Job or business — the questions people ask

Weigh four houses. A strong 6th house, with Saturn or the Sun tied to the 10th, leans towards service. A strong 7th and 11th, or the 10th lord placed in the 7th, leans towards business. Most charts can do either — the leaning tells you which will feel less like swimming upstream.

The 7th, for dealings with the open market and with clients, supported by the 11th for gains. Service is read from the 6th. The 10th house carries the profession itself whichever route you take.

The 10th lord in the 7th, or the 7th lord in the 10th, is the classical marker — strengthened by a well-placed 11th lord, by Mercury strong for trade, and by grahas gathered in the seventh-to-twelfth part of the chart.

KP asks one question: what the sub lord of the 10th cusp signifies. The 6th indicates service, the 7th indicates self-employment, and both together means the person does both. KP uses the Krishnamurti ayanamsa and Placidus cusps, so it is computed separately from the Parashari reading and never averaged with it.

Inside a mahadasha or antardasha whose lords connect to the 10th, 7th or 11th house. Avoid starting in a 12th-house period, and give a new venture at least one full antardasha before judging it.

Yes, and it is common. The usual reading is a sequence rather than a choice: employment first, something of your own built quietly beside it, and the jump made in a period that supports the 10th house.

Saturn is the graha of employment, so its connection with the 10th usually points to service — long tenure and a slow, durable rise. It does not forbid business; it means a business built on systems and patience rather than on quick turnover.

It gives a leaning and the reasons behind it, which is useful when a decision is stuck. It cannot name your industry or your co-founder. The KP half needs an accurate birth time, since a cuspal sub lord can change within minutes.
