Your Amatyakaraka Is the Planet That Shapes Your Career

In Jaimini astrology every chart has a king and a minister. The king is the Atmakaraka, the planet of the soul. The minister is the Amatyakaraka — the planet that carries out the soul's wishes in the world, through the work you do. It is the clearest single pointer in Jyotish to the kind of career you are made for, and how you go about it. This calculator finds your Amatyakaraka from your birth details and reads it by planet, house, sign and navamsa.

The Minister of the Chart

What the Amatyakaraka Means

Amatya means minister. In the old courts the king decided what mattered and the minister made it happen — raised the revenue, ran the offices, dealt with the people. Jaimini gave the chart the same shape. The Atmakaraka is what the soul wants from this life; the Amatyakaraka is how it goes out and gets it. That is why it is read above all for career, profession and the daily work that fills a life.

The Amatyakaraka also describes the people who help you in your work — employers, advisers, colleagues — and the kind of mind you bring to a job. A strong, well-placed Amatyakaraka makes work feel like a natural outlet; a troubled one shows a career that takes longer to find its shape.

Ranked by Degree

How to Find Your Amatyakaraka

  1. Take Each Planet's DegreeNote how far each planet has travelled in its sign, from 0° to 30°, ignoring which sign it is in.
  2. Rank Them, Highest FirstThe planet with the highest degree is the Atmakaraka. The one just below it is the Amatyakaraka.
  3. Choose Your SchemeThe seven-karaka scheme uses the Sun to Saturn. The eight-karaka scheme adds Rahu, counted as 30 minus its degree, and can shift the order.

An example. With Mars at 28°13' and Venus at 24°40', and no other planet higher, Mars is the Atmakaraka and Venus the Amatyakaraka — whatever signs they stand in.

King and Minister

Atmakaraka and Amatyakaraka Together

The most important test of the Amatyakaraka is its bond with the Atmakaraka. When the two are joined in one sign, in mutual rashi drishti, or in kendras from each other, the king and minister work as one. Jaimini counts this among the strongest raja yogas: the person's work carries their deeper purpose, and they tend to rise through it.

When the two are hostile — in the 6th and 8th from each other, or natural enemies badly placed — the soul and the career pull in different directions. Such people often change fields, or find that success at work does not satisfy them until they bring the two together.

Going Deeper

Navamsa, Dasamsa and Timing

The navamsa sign of the Amatyakaraka shows your working nature underneath — what you need from work to feel satisfied. Astrologers also check it in the Dasamsa (D10), the divisional chart of career: an Amatyakaraka strong in the Dasamsa confirms a successful career, one weak there asks for more effort.

For timing, watch the Vimshottari periods of the Amatyakaraka planet and the chara dasha of the sign it stands in. Career changes, promotions and new ventures often arrive in these periods, especially when the transit of Jupiter or Saturn touches the Amatyakaraka at the same time.

When a client asks which career to choose, he reads the Amatyakaraka before the 10th house — it usually names the field more plainly.

Questions

Amatyakaraka — Common Questions

Amatyakaraka is the chara karaka of career. In Jaimini astrology the planet with the second-highest degree in its sign becomes the Amatyakaraka — the minister to the Atmakaraka, the king of the chart. It shows the kind of work you are suited to and the way you go about it.

List the degrees each planet has travelled in its sign, ignoring the sign itself. The highest is the Atmakaraka; the second-highest is the Amatyakaraka. In the eight-karaka scheme Rahu is included, counted as 30 minus its degree. The calculator does this for you from your birth details.

Venus as Amatyakaraka points to a career in the pleasant trades — art, design, music, fashion, jewellery, hospitality, vehicles or any business in comfort and beauty. Your manner is an asset at work, and partners often help your career.

The 10th is the strongest place for a visible career, followed by the other kendras (1st, 4th, 7th) and the trikonas (5th, 9th). The 11th gives good earnings. In the 6th, 8th or 12th the career still comes, but through struggle, research, service or foreign lands.

When the Atmakaraka and Amatyakaraka are joined, in mutual rashi drishti, or in kendras from each other, Jaimini counts it as a raja yoga — the soul and its minister working together. People with this link usually find work that feels like a calling and rise through it.

Not in your birth chart — it is fixed at birth. But the seven and eight karaka schemes can give different answers when Rahu is involved, which is why the calculator's table shows every karaka so you can compare.
