Indu Lagna Shows Where Your Wealth Comes From

Two people can have a strong 2nd house and a strong 11th and still end up with very different bank balances. Classical astrologers kept a separate point for that question: the Indu Lagna, the wealth ascendant. Counted from the Moon with the help of the 9th lords, it shows how much prosperity the chart promises, where it tends to come from and which planetary periods bring it. This calculator finds your Indu Lagna, places it in your chart and gives you the six other special lagnas alongside it.

The Moon's Ascendant

What Indu Lagna Is

Indu is one of the Moon's names, and the Indu Lagna belongs to her. The Moon is the mind and the flow of daily life; the 9th house is fortune and the blessings carried from the past. The Indu Lagna joins the two — it takes the lords of fortune, counted both from the lagna and from the Moon, and turns them into a single sign that speaks for wealth.

It is one of a family of special lagnas that Vedic astrologers use beside the rising sign, each a second ascendant for one matter of life. Of them all, the Indu Lagna is the one most consulted for money, and Jaimini astrologers in particular will rarely judge a chart's prosperity without it.

The Kalas of the Planets

How Indu Lagna Is Calculated

Each of the seven planets carries a number called its kala, its measure of light. Rahu and Ketu have none and play no part here.

  2. Add Their KalasIf the 9th from the lagna is Taurus (Venus, 12) and the 9th from the Moon is Scorpio (Mars, 6), the total is 18.
  3. Divide by 12Keep the remainder: 18 leaves 6. A total that divides exactly counts as 12.
  4. Count From the Moon SignCount the remainder from the Moon sign, the Moon's own sign being the first. With the Moon in Pisces, the 6th sign is Leo — the Indu Lagna.

Benefics and Malefics

Reading Planets in the Indu Lagna

Treat the Indu Lagna as a wealth chart of its own. A natural benefic standing in it — Jupiter, Venus, a bright Moon or a well-placed Mercury — is among the clearest promises of prosperity in Jyotish, and the classical verses say such a person gathers wealth easily and keeps it. Two or more benefics there, free of malefic influence, raise the promise further.

A malefic in the Indu Lagna does not deny money. Saturn, Mars or the Sun there can give wealth too, especially when exalted or in their own sign, but it comes through hard work, authority, conflict or long delay. When the sign is empty, read its lord and the planets aspecting it: a strong lord well placed carries the promise just as surely.

Check the 11th from the Indu Lagna too. Planets in the 11th from it add to the gains, just as the 11th from the natal lagna does.

Where the Money Comes From

Indu Lagna in the Twelve Houses

The house the Indu Lagna falls in, counted from your natal lagna, shows the channel through which wealth tends to reach you. In the kendras, the trikonas, the 2nd and the 11th it is at its most generous; in the 6th, 8th and 12th money still comes, but it asks more of you or slips away more easily.

Timing

When the Wealth Arrives

The Indu Lagna shows how much, and from where; the dashas show when. The periods of planets standing in the Indu Lagna, of planets aspecting it and of its lord are the ones that bring money forward. In Jaimini's chara dasha, the period of the sign holding the Indu Lagna, or of a sign aspecting it, often marks a rise in income.

Transits add the finer timing. Jupiter moving through the Indu Lagna, or through the signs in trine to it, tends to open doors; Saturn there asks for patience and steady effort before the reward.

Beyond the Indu Lagna

The Other Special Lagnas

The Indu Lagna has six companions, each a second ascendant for its own matter. Four of them move from the Sun's place at sunrise at their own pace, so they need an accurate birth time; the other two are worked out from the lagna, the Moon and the Hora Lagna.

The six other special lagnas, how each is found and what it shows
LagnaHow It Is FoundWhat It Shows

Hora Lagna

One sign every hour from sunrise Wealth, earnings and sustenance

Ghati Lagna

One sign every ghati (24 minutes) from sunrise Power, authority and status

Shri Lagna

From the lagna, by the Moon's place in its nakshatra Fortune, prosperity and grace

Bhava Lagna

One sign every two hours from sunrise The strength of the houses

Varnada Lagna

From the lagna and the Hora Lagna Longevity and the course of life

Pranapada Lagna

One sign every 6 minutes from sunrise Vitality, and a check on the birth time

The Hora Lagna is the Indu Lagna's partner for money — read together, they show both the size of the wealth and the steadiness of the income. The Ghati Lagna speaks for rank: when the lagna, the Hora Lagna and the Ghati Lagna are aspected by the same planet, the chart holds a raja yoga of standing. The Shri Lagna is read for fortune and the grace that makes life easier.

Before he speaks about money in a chart, he checks the Indu Lagna and the Hora Lagna — they often tell a different story from the 2nd and 11th houses alone.

Questions

Indu Lagna — Common Questions

Indu Lagna is the wealth ascendant of a birth chart. Indu is a name of the Moon, and this lagna is counted from the Moon sign using the lords of the 9th house. Astrologers read it, alongside the 2nd and 11th houses, to judge how much wealth a person gathers and where it comes from.

Take the lord of the 9th house from the lagna and the lord of the 9th from the Moon. Add their kalas — Sun 30, Moon 16, Mars 6, Mercury 8, Jupiter 10, Venus 12, Saturn 1 — and divide the total by 12. Count the remainder from the Moon sign; a remainder of nothing counts as 12. That sign is the Indu Lagna.

The Indu Lagna in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) from the lagna, or in the 2nd or 11th, is the most supportive for wealth. In the 6th, 8th or 12th money can still come, but it tends to arrive through struggle, through others or from far away, and it is harder to keep.

A natural benefic in the Indu Lagna — Jupiter, Venus, a strong Moon or a well-placed Mercury — is one of the clearest signs of wealth in Jyotish, and its dasha tends to bring money. A malefic there can still give wealth, especially when exalted, but through harder work or tougher means.

An empty Indu Lagna does not mean a lack of money. Look at its lord and at the planets aspecting it: a strong, well-placed lord, or benefics aspecting the sign, carry the promise of wealth just as well. The dasha of the Indu Lagna's lord is then the period to watch.

They are two more special lagnas. Hora Lagna moves one sign every hour from sunrise and is read for earnings and sustenance; Ghati Lagna moves one sign every 24 minutes and is read for power and rank. This calculator gives both, along with Shri, Bhava, Varnada and Pranapada Lagna.
