The Planet That Shows How You Go After What You Want

Watch how people handle a deadline, an insult or a door that will not open, and you are watching Mars. Some push straight through; some go quiet and wait for their moment; some talk until the other side gives in. Mars is the planet of drive, courage and desire, and its sign in your birth chart shows the way you use your energy — at work, in a quarrel and in love.

It is the most practical planet in the chart. Your Sun says what you are trying to become; Mars says how you will actually go about it. It explains why two equally ambitious people can work in completely different ways, and why some people boil over in a minute while others stay cool for a year and then explode.

What you get from the calculator above: your Mars sign with its exact degree, the house it falls in, whether it was retrograde, and a reading of what it says about your drive — shown first, before every other planet in your chart is read by its sign.

Strong and Weak Mars Signs

Mars rules Aries and, traditionally, Scorpio; in these it acts with natural force — open in Aries, concentrated in Scorpio. It is exalted in Capricorn, where raw energy becomes discipline and endurance, which is why astrologers rate a Capricorn Mars so highly for careers that need a long, hard climb.

Mars is in detriment in Libra and Taurus, the signs of Venus, where it must work through others or through patience, and in its fall in Cancer, where action is driven by feeling rather than aim. These Mars signs are not weak people. They simply fight in less obvious ways, and often more cleverly.

Mars, Anger and Conflict: Knowing Your Own Temper

If you want to know how someone will behave in a row, read their Mars before their Sun. Fire Mars signs burn hot and fast; earth Mars signs are slow to anger but hard to move once roused; air Mars signs fight with words and logic; water Mars signs feel conflict deeply and often avoid it until it overflows.

This is one of the most useful things astrology can tell a couple. Two people with fire and water Mars signs will argue in completely different languages; knowing that turns many quarrels into misunderstandings that can be talked through.

The House of Mars: Where Your Drive Goes

The sign shows how you act; the house shows where you put your energy. Mars in the tenth house drives a career; in the fourth, it pours effort into home, property and family — and sometimes brings friction there; in the sixth, it makes a tireless worker; in the seventh, it brings strong-willed partners or rivals.

The house needs your birth time. The planets in houses reading covers Mars and every other planet in its house, and your birth chart shows them on the wheel.

Born With Mars Retrograde

Roughly every two years Mars turns retrograde for about two and a half months, so around one person in ten is born with it. A retrograde Mars tends to turn energy inward. These people often plan before they move, prefer to work on their own terms, and may struggle to show anger directly — then surprise everyone with their strength when they finally do.

A retrograde Mars is also slower to change sign, so it can stay in one sign for four months or more. Your reading marks Mars as retrograde if it was at your birth.

Mars and Venus: Desire and Attraction

In love, Mars and Venus work as a pair. Your Venus sign shows what attracts you and how you show affection; your Mars sign shows how you pursue and what excites you. A Venus in Libra with Mars in Scorpio wants grace and courtesy — and then intensity.

Between two charts, contacts between one person's Mars and the other's Venus are the classic signs of physical attraction. A synastry chart finds them all, along with the harder Mars links that bring friction.

Mars in Vedic Astrology: Mangal and Mangal Dosha

In Jyotish, Mars is Mangal, or Kuja — the commander, the karaka of courage, land, brothers and energy. Its house counted from the lagna and the Moon decides Mangal Dosha, one of the first things checked before a marriage. A Mars in its own sign or exalted in a kendra also forms Ruchaka Yoga, one of the five great yogas.

Because Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, Mars usually falls one sign earlier in your kundli than in this chart, so its dignity and its house can both change. Read each system by its own rules.

A Worked Example: My Own Mars Sign

Here is Mars in my own birth chart, read the way the calculator reads yours. Every number is the real one.

  1. The SignMy Mars is at 17°27'54" Sagittarius — a fire Mars, driven by a cause, enthusiastic and restless, quick to speak its mind and quick to move on.
  2. The HouseMars falls in my fourth house, the house of home, family and property. My drive goes into home, property and the family base that everything else is built on.
  3. Direct, Not RetrogradeMars was moving forward at its normal pace at my birth, so its energy goes outward rather than inward.
  4. Mars and VenusMy Mars is in a sextile to my Venus at 16°01'02" Libra, less than a degree and a half from exact — desire and affection working together rather than pulling against each other.
  5. The Vedic ViewIn the sidereal zodiac the same Mars is at 23°51' Scorpio, its own sign. Counted from my Vedic lagna in Leo, Scorpio is the fourth house — a kendra — so Mars in its own sign there forms Ruchaka Yoga. By the common rule a fourth-house Mars also makes a chart Manglik; Mars in its own sign is one of the classical exceptions.

Notice how the two systems meet here. The Western chart puts Mars in the fourth house; the Vedic chart, by a different route, puts it in the fourth as well — and in its own sign. When both systems point at the same house, I take that house very seriously.

Mars Sign: Questions People Ask

Your Mars sign is the sign of the zodiac Mars was in when you were born. It describes your drive: how you go after what you want, how you compete, how you handle anger and conflict, and the nature of your physical energy and desire.

From your date of birth, with the time and place for full accuracy. Mars usually spends about six or seven weeks in a sign, and much longer when it turns retrograde, so the date is usually enough. Its house needs the birth time.

It shows how you act. A Mars in Aries charges straight in; a Mars in Taurus is slow to start and impossible to stop; a Mars in Libra fights for fairness but hates open conflict. It also shows what makes you angry and how quickly you get over it.

Mars is desire and pursuit, where Venus is attraction and affection. Your Mars sign shows how you go after someone and what excites you physically. Between two people, one person's Mars on the other's Venus is the classic signature of chemistry.

Traditionally Mars is strongest in Aries and Scorpio, the signs it rules, and in Capricorn, its sign of exaltation, where its energy becomes disciplined and effective. It is in detriment in Libra and Taurus and in its fall in Cancer, where action is softened or turned inward.

Mars turns retrograde for about two and a half months roughly every two years, so around one person in ten is born with it. A retrograde Mars tends to turn energy and anger inward: such people often think before they act, work best on their own terms, and can surprise others with their strength when finally roused.

Yes, Mars is Mangal, or Kuja. In Jyotish its house from the lagna and the Moon also decides Mangal Dosha, and because Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, Mars usually falls one sign earlier in your kundli than in this Western chart.

Usually not, because Mars moves slowly. The time matters on the rare days when Mars changes sign, and for the house it falls in, which needs an accurate time.
