Why Mercury Stays Next to Your Sun Sign

Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun, and from Earth it never appears more than about 28 degrees from it. That is less than one sign, so your Mercury sign can only be your Sun sign or the sign just before or just after it.

This makes for three kinds of mind. When Mercury shares the Sun's sign, thought and identity are one — you think the way you are. When Mercury is in the sign before the Sun, the mind holds on to the qualities of that earlier sign; when it is in the sign after, the mind runs a step ahead of the self.

Fire, Earth, Air and Water Minds

A quick way to read any Mercury is by element. Fire Mercury signs think in leaps and inspire; earth Mercury signs think in steps and build; air Mercury signs think in connections and talk; water Mercury signs think in impressions and feel their way to an answer.

Mercury is strongest in Gemini and Virgo, the signs it rules — Virgo is also its sign of exaltation — and weakest in Sagittarius and Pisces, where the mind prefers the big picture and the intuition to the facts. A Pisces Mercury is not a poor thinker; it simply thinks the way a poet does.

Born With Mercury Retrograde

Mercury turns retrograde about three times a year, for roughly three weeks each time, so about one person in five is born with it. Despite its reputation, a retrograde Mercury at birth is not a fault. It gives a mind that turns inward: people with it often think long before they speak, revise their ideas, remember the past in detail and do their best work in writing or alone.

Being born just as Mercury stops and turns — a stationary Mercury — is rarer and makes the planet especially strong in the chart. Your reading marks Mercury as retrograde if it was.

The House of Mercury: Where Your Mind Is Busiest

The house shows where your thinking goes. Mercury in the third house makes a natural writer, teacher or talker; in the tenth, the mind is set on career; in the second, on money, trade and the value of words; in the ninth, on study, travel and big ideas.

Mercury Between Two People: Why Some Couples Talk Past Each Other

Of all the planets, Mercury decides how easily two people understand each other. Mercury signs of the same element usually click; a fire Mercury and an earth Mercury can say the same thing and hear something different. One person's Mercury on the other's Moon makes a couple who can talk about feelings; a hard aspect between the two Mercurys makes a couple who need to slow down and check what was meant.

Mercury in Vedic Astrology: Budh

In Jyotish, Mercury is Budh, the prince among the planets — the karaka of intelligence, speech, trade, mathematics and learning. It rules Gemini and Virgo and is exalted in Virgo, deepest at fifteen degrees. Astrologers read it closely for education and for any career that lives by the mind or the voice.

Because Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, Budh usually falls one sign earlier in your kundli than in this chart — which can move it into, or out of, a sign of strength.

A Worked Example: My Own Mercury Sign

Here is Mercury in my own birth chart, read the way the calculator reads yours. Every number is the real one.

  1. The SignMy Mercury is at 3°35'29" Libra — a diplomatic, balanced mind that weighs both sides before it speaks.
  2. Next to the SunMy Sun is at 21°11'44" Libra, so Mercury shares its sign, about 17½ degrees behind it. Mercury rose before the Sun that morning — a morning-star Mercury.
  3. Just Turned DirectMercury had been retrograde and turned direct less than four days before I was born, at 2°26' Libra. At my birth it was moving forward again, but still slowly — a mind that goes back over things before it moves on.
  4. The House and the Chart RulerMercury falls in my second house, the house of money, values and, in Jyotish, speech. With Virgo rising, Mercury is also the ruler of my whole chart, so its house carries extra weight.
  5. Its Strongest LinkMy Mercury is in a sextile to Uranus within about a degree and a quarter: original thinking, quick insight and a liking for ideas that are ahead of their time.
  6. The Vedic ViewIn the sidereal zodiac the same Mercury is at 9°58' Virgo — Budh in its sign of exaltation, close to the deepest point at fifteen degrees.

Both systems rate this Mercury well, from different directions: the Western chart makes it the chart ruler, and the Vedic chart puts Budh in exaltation. When two systems agree on a planet's importance, I give that planet the first place in the reading.
