The Dark Point That Shows Your Untamed Side

Every chart has a place where a person stops being polite. It is where they were once told to be quieter, smaller or more acceptable — and where, sooner or later, they refuse. Western astrologers read that place through Black Moon Lilith. Your Lilith sign describes the desires you learned to hide, the line you will not let anyone cross, and the raw power that comes back when you stop apologising for who you are.

Lilith is not a planet. It is an empty point in space: the far end of the Moon's orbit, where the Moon is farthest from Earth. If the Moon is the mother who nurtures, Lilith is the part of the feminine — in men and women alike — that would not be domesticated.

What you get from the calculator above: your Black Moon Lilith sign with its exact degree, the house it falls in and a reading of what it says about you — shown first, before every other planet in your chart is read by its sign.

What Black Moon Lilith Really Is

The Moon does not circle Earth in a perfect circle but in an ellipse, with Earth off-centre. That ellipse has a near end, the perigee, and a far end, the apogee. Black Moon Lilith is the apogee. Nothing sits there; it is the place the Moon swings out to and turns back from, which is why astrologers call it the "black" or empty moon.

The name comes from the Lilith of old Near Eastern legend, the first woman who refused to be ruled and left the garden rather than submit. In a chart the point carries the same story: where it falls, you meet the urge to refuse, the fear of being rejected for being too much, and the strength of someone who will no longer shrink.

The apogee moves slowly round the zodiac, taking about 8.85 years to cover all twelve signs — roughly nine months in each. Everyone born within the same nine months shares a Lilith sign; the house and aspects make it personal.

Mean Lilith and True Lilith: Which One Is Yours?

There are two ways to work out the apogee. Mean Lilith uses the average orbit and moves smoothly forward. True Lilith, also called osculating Lilith, uses the Moon's actual orbit at that moment; because the Sun keeps tugging that orbit out of shape, True Lilith swings back and forth and can sit many degrees away from the mean.

Most astrologers read Mean Lilith, and so does this calculator. If another site gives you a different Lilith sign, it is almost always because it used True Lilith — or an entirely different Lilith, the asteroid.

Lilith in the Twelve Signs: What You Refuse to Tame

Lilith InWhat You Will Not Give UpThe Shadow to Watch
AriesYour independence and your angerFighting every limit, even fair ones
TaurusYour pleasures, body and comfortsPossessiveness, guilt about desire
GeminiYour right to say what you thinkWords used as weapons
CancerYour own needs, apart from caring for othersSmothering, or refusing all care
LeoBeing seen and admiredPride that cannot bear to be ignored
VirgoYour own standards and methodsHarsh self-judgement
LibraEquality in every partnershipKeeping the peace at your own cost
ScorpioDepth, intensity and control of your lifeJealousy and power struggles
SagittariusYour freedom and your own beliefsRunning from any commitment

Read the two columns together. The first is the gift Lilith asks you to claim; the second is what happens when that same energy is pushed down and leaks out sideways.

The House of Lilith: Where Your Wild Side Lives

Because Lilith stays nine months in a sign, the house often says more than the sign does. In the first house Lilith sits on the personality itself — people sense something untamed the moment they meet you. In the fifth it shows in romance, creativity and pleasure; in the seventh, in partnerships and in the kind of partner you draw; in the tenth, in your career and how you deal with authority; in the eighth, in intimacy, shared money and power.

The house needs your birth time. The planets in houses reading covers every planet and point in its house, and your birth chart shows Lilith on the wheel with everything else.

Lilith With the Moon, Venus and Mars

Lilith is read closely with three planets. With the Moon, it touches the bond with the mother and how safe you feel showing your needs. With Venus, it colours love and attraction — a pull towards the forbidden, or a refusal to be loved on someone else's terms. With Mars, it charges desire and anger, and asks you to use both cleanly.

Keep the orbs tight — two or three degrees for a conjunction, a little wider for the others. Lilith is a sensitive point, not a planet, and loose aspects make it say too much. Between two people, one person's Lilith on the other's Venus, Mars or Moon is one of the strongest attractions a synastry chart can show, and one of the hardest to keep calm.

Lilith and Vedic Astrology

Lilith is a modern Western idea. Classical Jyotish does not use the lunar apogee at all; the lunar points it reads are Rahu and Ketu, the Moon's nodes, which mark where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. They describe hunger and release; Lilith describes refusal and reclaimed power. They are different points and answer different questions.

When I read for someone who knows their kundli, I treat Lilith as a Western layer on top of it, never a substitute for the nodes. If you work in the sidereal zodiac, remember that Lilith, like every other point, moves back by about 24 degrees, usually into the previous sign.

A Worked Example: My Own Lilith Sign

Here is Black Moon Lilith in my own birth chart, read the way the calculator reads yours. Every number is the real one.

  1. The SignMy Mean Lilith is at 12°51'59" Capricorn — the Lilith that will not take orders on how to build a life, and wants authority that is earned, not handed down.
  2. Mean Against TrueTrue Lilith in my chart is at 22°35'41" Capricorn, almost ten degrees further on. Here both versions agree on the sign, so the reading stands either way; in many charts they do not.
  3. The HouseIt falls in my fifth house, the house of creativity, romance and self-expression. Lilith here asks for creative work done on one's own terms, and a heart that is not ruled by what others expect.
  4. Square VenusLilith is square my Venus at 16°01'02" Libra, about three degrees from exact. Libra Venus wants harmony and approval; Capricorn Lilith refuses to bend to win it. That tension is the heart of this placement.
  5. Sextile JupiterLilith is also sextile my Jupiter at 14°25'01" Scorpio, within about a degree and a half. Jupiter gives the point a constructive outlet — independence turned into teaching and conviction rather than rebellion.
  6. The Vedic ViewJyotish has no Lilith, so my kundli is silent on this point. I read it only in the Western chart, beside the nodes rather than in place of them.

The lesson I take from this chart: a Lilith square to Venus is not a fault to fix, it is a pull between being liked and being true to oneself. The sextile to Jupiter shows how such a chart resolves it — by turning the refusal into a principle worth standing for.

Questions

Lilith Sign: Questions People Ask

Black Moon Lilith is not a planet or a moon. It is the lunar apogee, the point where the Moon's orbit is farthest from Earth. Astrologers read it as the wild, untamed part of you: the desires you were taught to hide, what you refuse to compromise on, and the power you find when you stop apologising for yourself.

Enter your date of birth, with the time and place. Mean Black Moon Lilith spends about nine months in each sign, so the date alone almost always gives the sign. The birth time is needed for the house it falls in.

Mean Lilith is the average position of the lunar apogee and moves smoothly. True, or osculating, Lilith is the apogee of the Moon's actual orbit at that moment; it wobbles back and forth and can differ from Mean Lilith by many degrees, sometimes enough to change the sign. This calculator uses Mean Lilith, the version most astrologers read.

No. Asteroid Lilith (number 1181) is a real body in the asteroid belt, and the Dark Moon (Waldemath's moon) is a hypothetical second moon. Black Moon Lilith, the one shown here, is the empty point at the far end of the Moon's orbit. All three are called Lilith, so check which one a reading uses.

Neither. Lilith shows where you have felt shamed, pushed aside or told to be less, and where you can take that energy back. Ignored, it tends to come out as anger, rebellion or secret longing; owned, it becomes a source of independence, honesty and personal power.

Lilith in the fifth house brings the untamed side out in romance, creativity and pleasure; in the seventh, in partnerships, where a person may meet strong, unconventional partners or struggle with being controlled. Each house shows the area of life where your Lilith story plays out.

No. Jyotish does not use Black Moon Lilith. The lunar points it reads are Rahu and Ketu, the Moon's nodes, which are a different pair of points from the apogee.

Rarely for the sign, since Mean Lilith moves only about three and a half degrees a month. The time matters if you were born on the day Lilith changed sign, and always for its house.
