The Point in Your Chart Where Luck Lives

There is no planet called Fortune, yet for two thousand years astrologers have marked a point in every chart and called it exactly that. The Part of Fortune is built from the three most personal points you have — your Ascendant, your Sun and your Moon — and it shows where good things come to you with the least resistance: health, comfort, money, the luck that seems to arrive on its own.

It is the oldest of the Arabic parts, also called lots, and the Greek astrologers who first used it treated it almost like a second Ascendant. Its sign tells you the style of your luck, its house tells you where to look for it, and the planet that rules its sign tells you how it arrives.

What you get from the calculator above: your Part of Fortune and Part of Spirit with their signs, degrees and houses, worked out with the day or the night formula as your birth requires; any Arabic part that falls right on one of your planets; and every other classical lot, grouped by the part of life it covers.

How the Part of Fortune Is Calculated: Day and Night Formulas

The idea is simple. Measure how far the Moon is from the Sun, then count the same distance from your Ascendant. Where you land is the Part of Fortune. For a day birth, that is Ascendant + Moon − Sun.

The ancient astrologers noticed that day and night charts behave differently — by day the Sun leads, by night the Moon — so for a night birth they measured the other way: Ascendant + Sun − Moon. Some modern astrologers use the day formula for everyone, which is the most common reason two websites give two different answers. This calculator follows the classical rule: it checks whether the Sun was above or below the horizon at your birth and uses the formula that fits.

There is a lovely link with your birth moon phase here. For a day birth, the Part of Fortune sits as far from the Ascendant as the Moon sits from the Sun. Born near a New Moon, your Fortune is close to the Ascendant; born near a Full Moon, it is close to the Descendant, opposite.

The Part of Fortune in the Twelve Houses

The house is the first thing to read. It shows the area of life where fortune flows most naturally — where effort pays off and where things tend to work out.

The Sign and the Ruler of Your Fortune

The sign of the Part of Fortune colours the kind of luck you have. In a fire sign it comes through boldness and enthusiasm; in earth, through patience and practical work; in air, through people and ideas; in water, through intuition and care.

Then look at the planet that rules that sign. Traditional astrologers called it the lord of the lot, and its condition says how easily fortune arrives. A Part of Fortune in Taurus, with Venus strong in your chart, gives luck that comes easily and stays; the same point with a struggling Venus gives good fortune that has to be earned. Your birth chart shows where that ruling planet sits.

Fortune and Spirit: What Comes to You and What You Go After

Every Part of Fortune has a twin, the Part of Spirit, worked out with the formula turned round. The ancients paired them like body and soul. Fortune is what comes to you — health, comfort, money, circumstance. Spirit is what you reach for — purpose, will, the work you choose.

When the two fall in houses that support each other, what you want and what you are given tend to line up. When they pull in different directions, life often asks you to choose between comfort and calling. Your reading shows both, side by side.

The Other Arabic Parts

Fortune and Spirit are only the beginning. Ancient and medieval astrologers worked out dozens of lots the same way — from the Ascendant and two other points — for love, marriage, children, courage, victory and more. They are called Arabic parts because Persian and Arab astrologers developed and spread them, though many began with the Greeks.

The calculator works out the classical lots and does two useful things with them. It flags any lot that falls within two degrees of one of your planets, because a lot sitting on a planet is switched on for life. And it groups the rest by the part of life they cover, so you can read your love lots together and your career lots together.

Part of Fortune and the Vedic Punya Saham

Jyotish knows the Part of Fortune too. In the Tajik system, used to read the annual Varshphal chart, the lots are called sahams, and the Part of Fortune is the Punya Saham — the saham of merit. Tajik astrologers work out dozens of sahams, for marriage, children, travel and more, exactly as the Arabic parts are worked out.

The difference is the zodiac. Vedic sahams are worked out in the sidereal zodiac, so the sign usually falls one earlier, while the house — which depends only on the distances involved — often stays the same.

A Worked Example: My Own Part of Fortune

Here is the Part of Fortune in my own birth chart, worked out exactly as the calculator works out yours. Every number is the real one.

  1. Day or NightI was born at night: my Sun was below the horizon, in the second house. So the night formula applies — Ascendant + Sun − Moon.
  2. The CalculationMy Ascendant is 3°57'22" Virgo, my Sun 21°11'44" Libra and my Moon 24°51'37" Virgo. The Moon sits about 26 degrees behind the Sun; counting that distance on from the Ascendant gives 0°17'30" Libra.
  3. The HouseMy second house begins at 0°16'49" Libra. The Part of Fortune falls just 41 seconds of arc past that cusp — right at the doorway of the house of money, possessions and speech.
  4. The RulerLibra is ruled by Venus, and my Venus is at 16°01'02" Libra — in its own sign and in the same second house. When the lord of the lot is strong and sits with the lot itself, fortune does not wander; it comes back to the same place.
  5. The Other FormulaHad I used the day formula, as some websites do for everyone, the point would land at 7°37'14" Leo in my twelfth house — a different house and a different story. That one step is why the formula matters.

The second house is also where most of my birth planets sit — the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and Pluto. With the Part of Fortune on its doorway and its ruler inside, the chart says the same thing three times over. That is how I read the Part of Fortune: never alone, but by asking whether the rest of the chart agrees.

Part of Fortune: Questions People Ask

The Part of Fortune is a sensitive point in the birth chart, worked out from the Ascendant, the Sun and the Moon. It is the oldest and best known of the Arabic parts, or lots, and astrologers read it as the place where luck, wellbeing and material good come to you most easily.

For a day birth, take the distance from the Sun to the Moon and count it forward from the Ascendant: Ascendant + Moon − Sun. For a night birth the classical astrologers reversed it: Ascendant + Sun − Moon. The calculator checks whether you were born by day or by night and uses the right one.

Because the ancient astrologers treated day and night charts differently. By day the Sun leads the chart and by night the Moon does, so the measurement is taken in the other direction at night. Some modern astrologers use the day formula for everyone, which is why charts from different sources can disagree.

The house shows the area of life where fortune flows. In the tenth it comes through career and reputation; in the seventh, through partners; in the second, through money and possessions; in the twelfth, through retreat, service or places far from home.

The Part of Spirit is the Part of Fortune's twin, worked out with the formula reversed. Where Fortune shows what comes to you — the body, health and possessions — Spirit shows what you go after: your purpose, will and chosen work. The calculator shows both.

Yes. The Part of Fortune moves with the Ascendant, about a degree every four minutes, so it changes sign every couple of hours. Without an accurate birth time, its sign and house cannot be trusted.

There are dozens, each worked out from the Ascendant and two other points: parts of Eros, marriage, children, courage, victory and many more. The calculator works out the classical lots and groups them by the part of life they cover, and marks any that fall on one of your planets.

Yes, in the Tajik system used for Varshphal, the annual chart. There the Part of Fortune is called Punya Saham, and it is one of many sahams worked out in the same way as the Arabic parts.
