Newborn Baby Horoscope: What Your Baby's Kundli Shows

The first chart in a family's life that nobody had to wait for is the baby's own. A newborn baby horoscope is drawn for the minute of birth, and from it come the things parents ask about first: the child's nature, health and way of learning, the letters the name should start with, and whether a Gandmool puja is needed. This report reads all of them from your baby's free kundli and puts them on one page.

Inside the Report

What the Newborn Baby Report Covers

The report is written for parents, not astrologers. Each part answers one plain question about the child, in the order most families ask them, and each is read from the baby's own birth chart rather than from a sun sign or a birth month. For couples still asking when will I have a baby, the reading starts earlier, in the parents' own charts.

Lagna · Rashi

Your Baby's Lagna and Moon Sign

Two points carry most of a baby's reading. The lagna, the sign rising in the east at birth, is the body and the natural temperament — how the child sleeps, eats, reacts and grows. The Moon sign is the mind: what comforts the child, what unsettles it, and how feelings come out. A lagna calculator and a moon sign calculator each find one of them; the report reads both.

The lagna moves fast, changing sign about every two hours, which is why a baby born in the morning and one born that evening can read so differently. The Moon moves slower but changes nakshatra pada about every six hours. A time taken from the hospital record, not from memory, is what keeps both right.

Most of a baby's report rests on the lagna. The sign and its lord set the temperament, learning, talents and health sections; the Moon's nakshatra sets the name letters and the Gandmool check.

Namakarana

Baby Name Letters by Nakshatra

In the Namakarana tradition, a child's name begins with a sound tied to the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras is split into four padas, and each pada has its own syllable, so every baby has one best letter and three more from the same nakshatra. Families usually choose the name before the ceremony on the 11th or 12th day.

The table below lists all 108 syllables. To find your baby's, you need the nakshatra and the pada; the report gives both, along with the recommended letter, from the birth time.

Temperament · Learning

Nature, Learning Style and Talents in a Baby's Chart

A baby's temperament shows long before it can speak, and the lagna describes it well. Fire lagnas — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius — tend to be quick and loud about what they want. Earth lagnas settle into routine and dislike sudden change. Air lagnas want company and talk early. Water lagnas feel the mood of the room and need closeness more than most.

The lord of the lagna then colours how the child learns. A Mercury-ruled lagna learns step by step and wants to know why; a Mars-ruled one learns by doing; a Jupiter-ruled one by being told the larger story. Knowing this early helps parents and teachers work with the child rather than against it, and that is the spirit in which the report is written.

Arogya

Health in a Newborn Baby's Horoscope

Each sign rules parts of the body, and the lagna sign shows which parts of a child's body are more sensitive than the rest — the throat for a Taurus lagna, digestion for a Virgo lagna, the chest for a Cancer lagna. The report names them so that parents know where to be watchful, not to predict illness.

A chart never replaces a paediatrician. Read the health section as a note on what to keep an eye on, and take every real concern to the doctor first.

Gandmool Dosha

Gandmool Nakshatra in a Newborn's Chart

Gandmool is the first thing many Indian families check when a baby is born. Six nakshatras sit at the joints of the zodiac, where a water sign ends and a fire sign begins, and a baby born with the Moon in any of them is said to be born in Gandmool. Three are ruled by Ketu and open a fire sign; three are ruled by Mercury and close a water sign.

About two babies in nine are born in one of these six nakshatras, so it is common, and it is not a curse. Tradition asks for a Gandmool Shanti Puja, usually on the 27th day after birth, when the Moon returns to the same nakshatra. The report says plainly whether your baby's Moon is in one of them.

Dosha Check

Other Doshas Checked at Birth

A chart is fixed at birth, so any dosha it carries is there from the first day. Most of them concern adult life and ask for nothing during childhood; the report notes them so that the family knows early and is never surprised later. Mangal dosha, for example, matters only when marriage comes up, twenty-odd years on.

Mangal Dosha

Kaal Sarp Dosha

Grahan Dosha

Worked Example

A Baby Kundli Reading From My Own Chart

Read as if I had just been born, my own chart has a Leo lagna, so the Sun is the lagna lord and the temperament, learning and talents sections would all start from Leo. The Moon sits in Virgo, in Uttara Phalguni nakshatra, pada 2.

That pada gives the name letter To, from the set Te, To, Pa and Pi — the same set shown in the picture at the top of this page. Uttara Phalguni is not one of the six Gandmool nakshatras, so the report would say no Shanti Puja is needed.

This is how I would read a newborn's chart by hand as well: lagna first for the child's nature, the Moon's nakshatra for the name, and the dosha checks last, so that parents hear the important things before the cautions.

Questions

Newborn Baby Report — Common Questions

Enter the baby's date of birth, the exact time from the hospital record and the place of birth in the form above. The report reads the baby's ascendant, Moon sign and birth nakshatra, gives the name letters, and checks Gandmool and the other doshas.

The first letter comes from the nakshatra and pada the Moon was in at birth. Each pada has its own syllable — a baby with the Moon in Uttara Phalguni pada 2, for example, gets To, from the set Te, To, Pa, Pi.

Gandmool nakshatras are the six that sit where a water sign meets a fire sign: Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula and Revati. A baby born with the Moon in one of them is said to be born in Gandmool.

No. About two babies in nine are born in one of these six nakshatras. Tradition asks for a Gandmool Shanti Puja, usually on the 27th day after birth, when the Moon returns to the same nakshatra, and nothing more.

Both, for different things. The lagna shows the body, health and natural temperament; the Moon sign shows the mind and feelings, and its nakshatra gives the name letters. The report reads the two together.

Yes. The chart is fixed at birth, so Mangal Dosha can be present from day one. It concerns marriage, decades away, and needs no action in childhood. It is simply noted for later.

Traditionally on the 11th or 12th day after birth, though many families hold it later. The name letter from the baby's birth nakshatra is chosen before the ceremony.

Usually not. The report names the gemstone of the baby's lagna lord, but gemstones are traditionally not given to small children, and any stone should be worn only after a full chart reading.

As accurate as the birth time. The lagna changes about every two hours and the Moon's nakshatra pada about every six, so use the time on the hospital record rather than a remembered one.

This report is written for babies and young children up to five years old. For an older child, the full free kundli reads the same chart in more depth.
