Amavasya: The Dark Moon and the Day of the Ancestors

Once a month the Moon disappears into the light of the Sun. That night is Amavasya, and this page gives every Amavasya of 2026 for your city, with the time it begins and ends and the right day for the vrat and for tarpan.

In the panchang Amavasya is the thirtieth tithi, the close of Krishna Paksha. The Sun and the Moon stand together, and the Moon, the karaka of the mind and of the mother, has no light of its own to show. The texts give this day to the pitrs. Water with black sesame offered in their name, a meal given to the needy, a lamp lit under a peepal tree in the evening: these are the simple acts of Amavasya, and they are said to reach the ancestors more surely on this day than on any other.

Some Amavasyas stand above the rest. Mauni Amavasya in Magha is kept in silence with a dip at Prayag. Sarva Pitru Amavasya closes Pitru Paksha. The Amavasya of Kartik is Diwali, and the Amavasya of Jyeshtha brings Shani Jayanti and, in North India, Vat Savitri.

Darsha and Udaya

Why an Amavasya Can Fall on Two Days

The new moon is an instant, but a calendar day runs from sunrise to sunrise. When Amavasya begins in the morning and ends before the next sunrise, the day it is running at sunrise and the day the Moon and Sun actually meet are not the same.

The panchang solves this by giving each act its own day. The vrat, the holy dip and charity follow the udaya tithi, the Amavasya at sunrise. Shraddha and tarpan follow the Darsha Amavasya, the day of the new moon itself. On this page every Amavasya that falls this way shows both, with the new moon's time.

Udaya Tithi

Amavasya at sunrise: the day of vrat, snan and daan.

Darsha Amavasya

The day of the new moon: shraddha and tarpan.

Somvati

Amavasya on a Monday, the most sacred for a holy dip.

Shani Amavasya

Amavasya on a Saturday, kept for Saturn.

In Practice

What I Advise for Amavasya

When a chart shows Pitru Dosha, or the Moon is weak, afflicted by Rahu or Saturn, I ask people to keep Amavasya rather than reach for a costly remedy first. Offer water and black sesame to the ancestors in the morning, feed someone in their name, and light a lamp of mustard oil under a peepal tree at dusk. Kept month after month, this does more than people expect.

I also tell them what not to do. Amavasya is not a day to sign, buy or begin. The mind is at its lowest with the Moon, so it is better spent in quiet, prayer and charity than in big decisions or arguments.

Do

Tarpan, a holy dip, charity, a lamp under the peepal.

Avoid

Weddings, griha pravesh, purchases, new ventures.

Worship

Shiva, the pitrs, and Shani on a Saturday Amavasya.

Food

Simple sattvic food; many keep a fast till evening.

Questions

Amavasya: Common Questions

The new moon: the thirtieth tithi of the lunar month, when the Moon stands with the Sun and cannot be seen. It closes the dark half, Krishna Paksha, and the next day the bright half begins. There are twelve or thirteen in a year.

Because two different moments matter. The vrat, the holy dip and charity are kept on the day Amavasya is running at sunrise, the udaya tithi. Shraddha and tarpan follow the new moon itself, the Darsha Amavasya, which can fall on the day before. When the two days differ, this page shows both.

An Amavasya that falls on a Monday. It is held especially sacred for a dip in a holy river and for married women, who walk around a peepal tree and pray for their husband's long life. Shani Amavasya, on a Saturday, is kept for Saturn, and Bhaumvati, on a Tuesday, for Mars.

Every Amavasya is a day for the ancestors, but Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the last day of Pitru Paksha, is the greatest of all. Mauni Amavasya in Magha and Somvati Amavasya are also held especially good for tarpan and charity.

It is a sacred day, not an unlucky one, but it is kept for the ancestors, worship and charity rather than for beginnings. Weddings, griha pravesh, new ventures and purchases are usually avoided on Amavasya.

Diwali falls on the Amavasya of Kartik by the Purnimanta calendar, the same night counted as Ashwin Amavasya by the Amanta calendar. Lakshmi Puja is done on the evening that Amavasya holds after sunset.

The new moon happens at one instant everywhere, but the day it falls on depends on your time zone and your sunrise. Pick your own city at the top of this page.
