Pitru Paksha 2027
Shradh: The Fortnight Kept for the Ancestors
Once a year, in the dark fortnight after Bhadrapada Purnima, every Hindu household turns to the people it came from. These fifteen days are Pitru Paksha, also called Mahalaya Paksha or simply Shradh, and the Shradh calculator above gives each ancestor's Shradh date in 2027 from the tithi of the funeral.
The word shradh comes from shraddha, faith. What is offered in these days, water with sesame in tarpan, rice balls in pinda daan, a meal to a Brahmin, food set out for the crow, the cow and the dog, is offered in faith that it reaches the pitrs, the departed of three generations. The texts say the ancestors come close to the earth in this fortnight and wait at the door of their descendants. A family that remembers them is blessed; a family that forgets is said to feel the weight of that in its own affairs.
Pitru Paksha runs from Bhadrapada Purnima to Ashwin Amavasya by the Purnimanta calendar of North India. By the Amanta calendar of the South and West it is the dark half of Bhadrapada. The days are the same; only the month's name differs.

Shradh Tithi
How the Shradh Date Is Found From the Tithi of the Funeral
An ancestor's Shradh is never fixed by a calendar date. It is fixed by the tithi on which the funeral rites, the cremation, were performed. A grandfather whose cremation fell on Krishna Saptami and one whose cremation fell on Shukla Saptami both have their Shradh on Saptami of Pitru Paksha, because in this fortnight the paksha is set aside and only the tithi number counts.
The tithi is the one running when the cremation took place. A tithi often changes during the day, so a cremation in the evening can belong to a different tithi from the one a calendar prints for that date, since a calendar prints the tithi at sunrise. Give the time if you know it, and this calculator reads the tithi at that minute.
Then comes the day itself. Each Shradh is kept on the day its tithi holds the Aparahna, the afternoon. A short tithi can share one afternoon with the next, and two Shradhs fall together; a long one can leave a day with no new tithi. That is why the dates move a little every year, and why the calendar above is worked out afresh for each year and each city.
Tithi, Not Date
The tithi of the funeral fixes the Shradh, every year.
Paksha Set Aside
Shukla or Krishna, the tithi number alone counts.
Time of Funeral
The tithi at that minute, not at sunrise.
Aparahna Rule
The day the tithi holds the afternoon.
The Rites
What Is Done on the Day of Shradh
The full ritual is long and is best done with a family priest. These are its parts, in the order they come.
Tarpan
Water with black sesame and kusha grass, offered from the palm to each ancestor by name and gotra.
Pinda Daan
Balls of cooked rice, barley flour, ghee and sesame, offered for the three generations of fathers and mothers.
Brahmin Bhojan
A simple sattvic meal served to a Brahmin, with dakshina, in the ancestor's name.
Panchbali
Portions of the meal set aside for the cow, the dog, the crow, the ants and the gods before the family eats.
In Practice
What I Tell Families Who Ask About Shradh
The question I hear most in Pitru Paksha is "we don't know the tithi, what do we do?" The answer is simple: keep the Shradh on Sarva Pitru Amavasya. It is meant for exactly that, and no ancestor is left out on that day. If you do know the date of the funeral, note the time as well; the tithi often changes during the day, and a few hours can move a Shradh by a whole day.
In a chart, the ninth house and the Sun speak of the father and the line before him, and Pitru Dosha is read from the afflictions there. I always tell people that no remedy for Pitru Dosha replaces a Shradh kept with care. Offer the water, feed someone in their name, and the rest follows. These fifteen days are not a time of mourning; they are a time of gratitude.
Avoid
New purchases, weddings, griha pravesh and new ventures during Pitru Paksha.
Food
Simple sattvic food; no onion, garlic, meat or alcohol in the house on the day.
Who Performs It
Traditionally the eldest son; a daughter, wife or any family member may too.
Where
At home is complete; Gaya, Haridwar and Prayag are held most sacred.
Questions
Shradh: Common Questions
By the tithi on which the funeral rites, the cremation, were performed, not by the calendar date. Each year, in Pitru Paksha, the Shradh is offered on the day that tithi holds the afternoon, the Aparahna. So a cremation on Krishna Shashthi and one on Shukla Shashthi both have their Shradh on Shashthi Shraddha.
Because a tithi often changes during the day. A cremation in the evening can fall in a different tithi from the one printed for that date, since a calendar prints the tithi at sunrise. Give the time and this calculator reads the tithi running at that minute.
Then the Shradh is offered on Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the last day of Pitru Paksha. It is set aside for every ancestor, and for anyone whose tithi is not known or whose day was missed.
A tithi is not a fixed 24 hours. When one tithi is short, two tithis can both run through the same afternoon, and both Shradhs fall on that day. In other years one tithi can hold two afternoons. The calendar on this page already shows each year's arrangement for your city.
Aparahna is the fourth of the five parts of the day, roughly the early afternoon. It is the time the texts prefer for Shradh. The day matters most, though: a Shradh performed at another hour of the right day is still complete.
Mothers and the married women of the family who have passed away. The Shradh of a mother is commonly offered on Navami, whatever the tithi of her funeral, in many families.
Ghata Chaturdashi is kept for those who died an untimely death: in an accident, by a weapon or in a similar way. Others whose funeral fell on Chaturdashi have their Shradh on Amavasya in many traditions.
Usually, but not always. The Aparahna depends on your own sunrise and sunset, so on a day when a tithi changes close to the afternoon, one city can keep a Shradh a day apart from another. Pick your own city above.
