The clock inside your kundli

A birth chart tells you what a life contains. It does not tell you when. That second question — the one everybody actually asks — is answered by the dasha system, and in Parashari Jyotish the dasha that answers it is Vimshottari.

The rule is simple enough to state in a sentence: 120 years are divided among the nine grahas in a fixed order and in fixed shares, and the sequence begins from the lord of the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth. Ketu holds 7 years, Venus 20, the Sun 6, the Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 — and then the wheel turns again. Because the Moon was somewhere inside that nakshatra and not at its start, part of the first period had already run before you were born; that leftover is your balance of dasha at birth, and every date that follows in your life rests on it.

The Vimshottari dasha wheel, nine planetary periods across 120 years
Nine lords, 120 years, one fixed order — beginning from the Moon's nakshatra.

How your Vimshottari dasha is calculated

Three things decide the whole sequence, and all three come from the Moon.

  1. The nakshatraThe Moon travels 13°20′ of the zodiac in a day and a bit, and the 27 nakshatras divide its path. Whichever one it stood in at your birth minute fixes the first mahadasha: Ashwini, Magha and Mula belong to Ketu; Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha to Venus; and so on through the nine.
  2. The degree inside itThe Moon rarely enters a nakshatra at the moment of birth. If it had crossed a third of Uttara Phalguni, a third of the Sun's six years was already spent — you were born with four years of Sun dasha left, not six. Getting this balance right is why the birth time matters here as much as it does for the lagna.
  3. The orderFrom that first lord the sequence never varies: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. Each mahadasha divides into nine antardashas in the same order and proportion, each antardasha into nine pratyantardashas, and so down to sookshma and pran.

Your dasha above is calculated to the fifth level — which is how an astrologer narrows a year to a week.

Reading a mahadasha — what the period lord actually promises

Beginners read the dasha lord's nature: Saturn dasha, so hardship. That is not how it works. A mahadasha delivers what its lord promises in your chart — the houses it rules, the house it sits in, the company it keeps, its dignity, and its strength in the Navamsa.

Saturn ruling your 10th and sitting in its own sign gives a Saturn dasha of steady rise through work, not of loss. The same Saturn ruling the 8th and debilitated gives something else entirely. Jupiter dasha for a Leo ascendant is not the Jupiter dasha of a Gemini ascendant, because for one Jupiter rules the 5th and 8th and for the other the 7th and 10th.

  • Which houses does the period lord rule for your lagna?
  • Which house does it sit in, and with whom?
  • What does it aspect, and what aspects it?
  • Is it exalted, in its own sign, or debilitated?
  • How does it stand in the Navamsa — vargottama, or weak?

A weak lord in a good house gives promises it cannot keep; a strong lord in a difficult house gives results with friction, but it gives them.

Your dasha prediction — what the running period holds

The calculator does not stop at dates. Below the table you get a dasha prediction for the period running today — the mahadasha, the antardasha and the pratyantardasha read together, because a year is set by all three and not by the mahadasha alone. Under that, every mahadasha of your life is read from where its lord actually sits in your chart: the house, the sign, the nakshatra and what the combination has been known to bring.

Read it as a direction, not a verdict. A dasha prediction tells you what a stretch of years is made for — building, consolidating, waiting, letting go — and that is usually worth more than a date.

Antardasha and pratyantardasha — where the timing gets sharp

The mahadasha sets the theme of a decade or two. The antardasha inside it sets the year, and the pratyantardasha the month. The classical way to time an event is to look for a period where the mahadasha lord and the antardasha lord both connect to the house in question — the 7th for marriage, the 10th for a job, the 2nd and 11th for money.

That is why a Jupiter mahadasha can hold both the best and the worst years of a life: Jupiter–Venus and Jupiter–Saturn are not the same stretch. Your dasha table opens level by level — tap a mahadasha to see its antardashas, an antardasha to see its pratyantardashas, and so on to pran, where a period lasts hours.

Vimshottari dasha and the transits — the two clocks together

A dasha opens the door; a transit walks through it. Saturn crossing your 10th house does little on its own if the running dasha has nothing to do with the 10th; the same transit during a 10th-lord dasha is when the promotion or the departure actually happens.

An experienced astrologer will not name a date from a dasha alone, nor from a transit alone. The dasha says what is due; the transit says which month it arrives. Read your Vimshottari periods first, then look at where Saturn and Jupiter are travelling — that pairing is the whole of Vedic timing.

What the balance of dasha at birth tells you

Two people born on the same day, minutes apart, can start life in different dashas. A child born with sixteen years of Rahu balance grows up under a very different sky from one born with two years of Rahu left and Jupiter arriving at three.

The balance also tells an astrologer where in the wheel your life falls. A person who begins with Venus runs Sun, Moon and Mars in youth and reaches Saturn in old age; a person who begins with Saturn meets Mercury and Ketu early and Jupiter at fifty. Neither is better. But knowing which stretch of the wheel your working years fall in explains a great deal about how a life is shaped.

The nine mahadashas, in brief

LordYearsWhat the period turns on
Ketu7Detachment, sudden turns, a pull toward the inner life
Venus20Comfort, relationships, art, vehicles, the good life
Sun6Authority, the father, standing, health
Moon10The mind, the mother, home, public life
Mars7Energy, property, siblings, disputes
Rahu18Ambition, foreign lands, unusual paths
Jupiter16Growth, children, teachers, dharma
Saturn19Work, delay, responsibility, endurance
Mercury17Trade, communication, learning, travel

Read the line for your running dasha as a starting point only — the real reading is the one in the calculator, made from where that lord sits in your own chart.

How accurate is an online Vimshottari dasha calculator?

Exact, if the birth time is exact. The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day, so a few minutes of error changes the balance by weeks and the pratyantardasha dates by more; an hour's error can shift the whole sequence by months.

The positions here come from the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa — what the Indian panchang uses — and the periods are computed from the Moon's exact longitude, not from a rounded nakshatra. What no calculator can do is judge: the same Saturn dasha reads differently in two charts, and that reading is what an astrologer is for.

Questions

Vimshottari dasha — the questions people ask

The main timing system of Parashari Jyotish. It divides 120 years among the nine grahas in a fixed order — Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 — beginning from the lord of the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. Every period divides again into antardashas and below, so a life can be read year by year.

From how far the Moon had travelled into its nakshatra. If a third of the star was already crossed, a third of that lord's period was already spent, and you were born with the rest of it. That remainder sets every date in the sequence, which is why an accurate birth time matters.

The calculator names it — mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha together, with the dates and how long is left. Below the table you also get a reading of that combination from your own chart.

No. Saturn gives according to what it rules and where it sits: ruling the 10th from a strong position it builds a career through nineteen years of steady work. Ruling the 8th and debilitated it is harder. The lord's dignity and houses decide the period, not the planet's reputation.

They are the levels inside a mahadasha. Each mahadasha holds nine antardashas in the same planetary order — these set the year. Each antardasha holds nine pratyantardashas, which set the month. Below them are sookshma and pran, down to hours.

It gives the window. A marriage is expected when the running mahadasha and antardasha lords both connect to the 7th house or Venus; a job change when they connect to the 10th. The chart says whether it is promised at all; the dasha says when it can come, and a transit confirms the month.

Yes. The Moon moves roughly one degree every two hours, and the dasha balance is measured in degrees inside a nakshatra. A short error moves dates by weeks; an hour moves them by months. Use the hospital record where you can.

The dasha. It decides what is due; the transit decides which month it lands. A powerful transit in an unrelated dasha passes with little to show, while an ordinary transit during the right dasha can change a life.
