Solar Return Chart: A New Chart Every Birthday

Once a year the Sun comes back to exactly the place it held when you were born. It happens on your birthday, give or take a day, at a minute that changes from year to year. Astrologers cast a chart for that minute and call it the solar return — a birth chart for the year ahead, running from one birthday to the next.

It is one of the most practical tools in Western astrology. The birth chart tells you who you are; the solar return tells you what this particular year is about. One year the return puts the Sun in the tenth house and work takes over; the next it lands in the fifth, and the year is about love, children or a creative project. Many people check it each birthday the way others make resolutions.

What you get from the calculator above: the year's rising sign, read as the tone of the year, with the dates the chart runs; the solar return wheel; the year at a glance — where your Sun and Moon fall and the tone of your career; every planet's sign, degree and house, each read for the year; and the strongest aspects in the chart. A year picker opens any year of your life.

The Solar Return Ascendant: The Tone of Your Year

The Sun is in the same sign in every solar return you will ever have, so it cannot tell one year from another. The rising sign can. It changes from year to year, and it sets the mood of the twelve months — how you approach the year and how the year approaches you.

Where the Sun Falls: The Main Focus of Your Year

Because the rising sign moves while the Sun stays put, the Sun lands in a different house of the solar return each year, and that house is the year's headline. In the first house it is a year about you — your body, your image, a fresh start. In the fourth, home and family come first. In the seventh, a partner or a partnership. In the tenth, career and public life. In the twelfth, a quieter year of rest and inner work before a new cycle begins.

Your reading names the house of your solar return Sun and what it brings, alongside every other planet in its house for the year.

The Moon and the Midheaven: Feelings and Career This Year

The Moon of the solar return shows where your feelings will be centred — what you will need and what will move you. A Moon in the seventh puts a relationship at the heart of the year's emotions; in the sixth, it is daily work and health that occupy you.

The Midheaven, the top of the chart, sets the tone for your career and reputation. Its sign shows the style in which the year's work goes: a Capricorn Midheaven asks for patience and structure, a Leo Midheaven puts you on show. Both appear in your year at a glance.

Planets on the Angles and the Aspects of the Year

Any planet sitting close to the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven or the bottom of the solar return chart is loud for the whole year. Jupiter on the Ascendant is one of the most welcome sights in a return; Saturn on the Midheaven promises a year of hard-earned achievement; Mars on the Descendant can bring a rival or a passionate partner.

The aspects inside the chart show how the year's forces combine. Trines and sextiles point to what will come easily, squares and oppositions to the year's pressure points. Your reading lists the strongest of them.

Reading the Return Against Your Birth Chart

A solar return never stands on its own; it switches on parts of your birth chart. If the rising sign of the return falls on an important point of your natal chart — your natal Moon, say, or your natal Midheaven — that point becomes the year's theme. Experienced readers also set the return beside the year's transits and your progressed chart; when all three point to the same area of life, it is very likely to be the story of the year.

Does It Matter Where You Spend Your Birthday?

The planets of a solar return are the same wherever you are, but the rising sign and the houses depend on the place. That has given rise to one of astrology's more charming habits: birthday travel. Some astrologers cast the return for wherever you are at the moment it happens, and a few clients choose where to spend their birthday to put a good planet on an angle.

Others hold that the birthplace chart is the true one. This calculator casts the return for your birthplace, which is the more widely used starting point.

Solar Return and Vedic Varshphal

India has its own annual chart: Varshphal, from the Tajik tradition. It, too, is cast for the Sun's return each year, but in the sidereal zodiac, so the moment falls a little differently, and it is read with its own tools — the Muntha, the lord of the year and the Tajik yogas.

The Western solar return reads the year through houses, angles and aspects, much as it reads a birth chart. The two often agree on what a year is about, and people who follow both traditions find it worthwhile to compare them each birthday.

A Worked Example: My Own Solar Return for 2026

Here is my own solar return for the year from my 2026 birthday to my 2027 one. It is cast the way the calculator casts yours, for my birthplace, and every position in it is real.

  1. The MomentThis year the Sun returns to its birth degree, 21°11'44" Libra, in the evening. The year before, the same return fell around midday. That shift of about a quarter of a day each year is why the rising sign changes so much from one return to the next.
  2. The Rising SignTaurus rising, at 1°33'56". The year before, it was Capricorn. A Taurus year asks for steadiness: building, saving and putting things on firm ground. Note the degree, though. So close to the start of the sign, a birth time just a few minutes out would give Aries rising instead, and I read my own return with that in mind.
  3. The Sun's HouseThe Sun falls in the sixth house: a year about daily work, routines and health more than grand gestures.
  4. The MidheavenCapricorn on the Midheaven at 21°02'04", with Pluto in the tenth house: career asks for patience and structure, and a slow, deep change in the way I work.
  5. The MoonThe Moon is in Sagittarius in the eighth house, opposite Uranus to within a degree. Feelings around shared money and other people's resources can change suddenly this year.
  6. The Strongest LinksThe tightest aspect is the Sun sextile Jupiter, less than a degree from exact, with Mars trine Saturn close behind: steady effort, well rewarded. Venus, retrograde in Scorpio, sits near the Descendant, so partnerships and agreements will be looked at again.

Put together, it is a working year, not a showy one. Taurus rising, a sixth-house Sun and a Capricorn Midheaven all say the same thing — patient, steady work — and Jupiter supports it. That is how I read any return: the rising sign for the tone, the Sun for the focus, and the closest aspects for what will flow. The next return will be different again.

Solar Return Chart: Questions People Ask

A solar return chart is cast for the exact moment each year when the Sun comes back to the degree it held at your birth. It falls on or within a day of your birthday, and astrologers read it as a forecast for the twelve months until your next birthday.

Almost always on your birthday or a day either side. The calendar year is not exactly the length of the Sun's journey, so the moment of return drifts by up to a day from year to year, and its time of day changes too.

The rising sign of the solar return sets the tone of the year, and the house the Sun falls in shows where your main focus will be. Astrologers then look at the Moon for the emotional focus, the Midheaven for career, and any planet sitting close to an angle.

Yes. Once your chart is open, a year picker lets you move to any year of your life — next year to plan ahead, or a past year to see how it matched what happened.

Many astrologers believe so. The planets of a solar return are the same anywhere on Earth, but the rising sign and houses depend on the place. Some cast the chart for where you are at the moment of the return, and a few even travel for their birthday to get a better chart. This calculator casts it for your birthplace.

Both are charts for the Sun's return each year. Western solar returns use the tropical zodiac and read houses and aspects much like a birth chart. Varshphal, the Tajik annual chart of Vedic astrology, uses the sidereal zodiac and adds its own tools — the Muntha, the year lord and the Tajik yogas.

Yes, more than for most charts. An error in the birth time moves the moment of return by the same amount, and the rising sign of the return turns a full sign every couple of hours. A time out by an hour can give a different solar return Ascendant.

From one return to the next — birthday to birthday. Its themes are often felt a few weeks before the birthday and fade as the next return approaches.
