Your Birth Chart Has Been Growing Up With You

You are not the person you were at twenty, and astrology has a way of showing it. The progressed chart takes your birth chart and lets it age: the Moon moves on into new signs, the Sun edges forward a degree each year, and planets that were quiet at birth come into contact with one another. What you see is not what is happening to you from outside, but who you are slowly becoming.

The method is old and elegant. Each day after your birth stands for one year of your life. The sky on the tenth day describes you at ten; the sky on the fortieth, you at forty. Of all the moving parts, the progressed Moon is the one people recognise first — every two and a half years it changes sign, and with it, often, what you care about most.

What you get from the calculator above: the emotional chapter your progressed Moon has opened, with when it began and when it ends; the progressed chart wheel; the big shifts in your progressed Sun, Ascendant and Midheaven; every planet's birth sign beside its progressed sign; what the progressed planets are triggering in your birth chart; and the solar arc. Choose any date from your birth onwards, and the city you live in now if it differs from your birthplace.

How Secondary Progressions Work: A Day for a Year

Secondary progressions rest on one simple equation: one day after birth equals one year of life. To see your chart at 35, an astrologer looks at the planets 35 days after you were born. Nothing is invented — it is the real sky of those days, read as a slow-motion picture of your development.

Because the scale is so compressed, only the faster bodies move far. The progressed Moon travels the whole zodiac in about 27 years. The progressed Sun moves about a degree a year. Mercury, Venus and Mars shift a few signs at most in a lifetime, and sometimes turn retrograde or direct along the way — a quiet but real change in how you think, love or act. Jupiter and beyond barely move at all.

The Progressed Moon Through the Signs: Your Emotional Chapters

Each move of the progressed Moon into a new sign starts a chapter of roughly two and a half years. People often remember these chapters without knowing their names.

The house the progressed Moon passes through matters as much as its sign: in the tenth, the chapter plays out at work; in the fourth, at home. Your reading gives your progressed Moon's sign and the approximate dates the chapter began and ends.

When Your Progressed Sun Changes Sign

The progressed Sun moves about one degree a year, so it changes sign once every thirty years or so — at most three or four times in a long life. If you were born with the Sun late in a sign, the first change came in childhood, and you may have grown up feeling more like the next sign than your own.

That is one of the most common reasons people say their Sun sign does not fit. A Libra whose Sun progressed into Scorpio at twelve has spent most of life with Scorpio intensity on top of Libra grace. Your reading shows where your progressed Sun is now, and roughly when it moves on.

The Progressed Ascendant and Midheaven

The angles of the chart progress too. The progressed Midheaven moves about a degree a year and tracks the direction of your career and public life; when it changes sign, ambitions often change with it. The progressed Ascendant shows how your manner and the way people see you evolve — the rising sign you were born with, slowly maturing.

Because the angles depend on the birth time, they are the parts of the progressed chart to read with most care when the time is uncertain.

What Your Progressions Are Triggering

A progressed planet reaching an exact aspect to one of your birth planets is one of the strongest timers in Western astrology. Progressed Venus meeting your birth Sun is a classic sign of love or marriage; the progressed Sun reaching your birth Saturn often brings a period of hard work and new responsibility.

These aspects form slowly and last a year or two, which is why they describe the background of a period rather than a single day. Your reading lists those in force on the date you choose.

Solar Arc Directions

The solar arc takes the distance your progressed Sun has travelled — about a degree for each year — and moves every point of your birth chart forward by that same amount. Your whole chart turns together, like a dial. When a moved planet or angle reaches an exact aspect to a birth planet, astrologers look for a turning point: a move, a new job, a relationship that begins or ends.

Solar arc contacts are sharp and usually active for about a year. Your reading shows how far your chart has turned and the contacts it is making now.

Progressions for Where You Live Now

The planets in a progressed chart are the same wherever you are, but the houses and angles depend on a place. Many astrologers cast the progressed chart for where you live now rather than where you were born, because that is where your life is happening.

Once your chart is open, enter your current city, and the progressed houses and angles are worked out there. Leave it empty to keep your birthplace.

Progressions, Transits and Solar Returns Together

Astrologers rarely read progressions alone. Transits are the outside world arriving; progressions are the inner development that meets it. When a big transit and a progressed aspect fall in the same months, that period nearly always stands out in a person's life. The solar return adds the theme of the year, from one birthday to the next, and the birth chart underneath all three is the promise they unfold.

A Worked Example: My Own Progressed Chart

Here is my own chart, progressed to the start of October 2026, when I am 43. It is worked out the way the calculator works out yours, and every position is the real one.

  1. The Progressed MoonMy progressed Moon is at 23°01'50" Aries. It entered Aries in January 2025 and moves into Taurus around April 2027. An Aries chapter: a fresh start, impatience with the old, and the urge to begin things on my own terms.
  2. The Progressed SunI was born with the Sun in Libra. It progressed into Scorpio when I was about nine, spent thirty years there, and moved into Sagittarius at about 39; today it stands at 5°16'14" Sagittarius. It is a good example of why a Sun sign alone can feel wrong — for most of my life, my progressed Sun has not been in Libra at all.
  3. A New ClusterProgressed Mercury, at 9°48'30" Sagittarius, and progressed Venus, at 11°09'57" Sagittarius, have followed the Sun into the same sign. Three progressed planets now sit together in Sagittarius — a cluster that did not exist at my birth, where my Sun, Mercury and Venus were all in Libra.
  4. What Is Being TriggeredProgressed Mars, at 20°23'42" Capricorn, is less than a degree from an exact square to my birth Sun at 21°11'44" Libra, and still closing; it will be exact in about a year. A square from Mars to the Sun asks for effort and courage, with some friction along the way.
  5. The Solar ArcMy chart has turned 44°04' since birth. By solar arc, the Midheaven has reached a square to my birth Venus, within half a degree — a classic marker of change in work and in what one values.

An Aries progressed Moon, a new cluster in Sagittarius and progressed Mars pressing on the birth Sun all point the same way: a period of initiative and movement rather than standing still. Set beside my solar return for the same year, which asks for steady, patient work, the two give a balance — begin boldly, then build patiently. That is why I always read progressions and the solar return together.

Progressed Chart: Questions People Ask

A progressed chart shows how your birth chart has developed as you have grown. In secondary progressions, the positions of the planets each day after your birth stand for each year of your life: the sky thirty days after you were born describes you at thirty.

The Moon in your progressed chart. It moves about one degree a month and changes sign roughly every two and a half years, so it marks the emotional chapters of life — what you need, what you are drawn to and where your feelings are focused at the time.

About every two and a half years, depending on how fast the Moon was moving after your birth. It goes all the way round the zodiac in about 27 to 28 years, so most people live through every progressed Moon sign at least twice.

The progressed Sun moves about one degree a year, so it changes sign roughly once every thirty years. When it does, the way you express yourself shifts: a Pisces whose Sun progresses into Aries often becomes more direct and self-starting. Many people feel this as a change in who they are becoming.

Transits are the real planets of today touching your birth chart, an outside influence. Progressions are your own chart unfolding from within, a slow inner development. Astrologers often say transits are what happens to you, and progressions are who you are becoming.

A timing method in which every point of your birth chart is moved forward by the same amount the progressed Sun has moved — about one degree for each year. When a moved planet reaches one of your birth planets, it marks a turning point.

Yes. Once your chart is open, choose any date from your birth onwards. You can also enter the city where you live now, so the progressed houses and angles are worked out for where your life is actually happening.

For the progressed planets, a close time is enough. The progressed Ascendant and Midheaven move fast enough that the birth time needs to be accurate, and the progressed Moon's dates shift by about a month for every two hours of error.
