The Planet That Shows How You Love

Ask two people what romance means and you can get two completely different answers. One wants flowers and long dinners; the other wants honesty and someone to argue ideas with until two in the morning. Astrology puts much of that difference down to one planet. Venus, the brightest light in the evening sky after the Moon, shows how you love, what you find beautiful and what makes you feel valued.

Your Sun sign describes who you are; your Venus sign describes how you attach. It is the first placement astrologers look at when someone asks why their relationships keep following the same pattern, or why they are drawn to the people they are drawn to. It also colours taste — in clothes, music, homes — and the way you handle money and pleasure.

What you get from the calculator above: your Venus sign with its exact degree, the house it falls in, whether it was retrograde, and a reading of what it says about you — shown first, before every other planet in your chart is read by its sign.

Venus never strays more than about 47° from the Sun, so your Venus sign is always close to your Sun sign.

Why Your Venus Sign Is Always Close to Your Sun Sign

Venus orbits inside the Earth's orbit, so from where we stand it never wanders far from the Sun — at most about 47 degrees, which is why it only ever appears as a morning or evening star. In practice that means your Venus sign is your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side of it. A Leo can have Venus in Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Libra, but never in Capricorn.

When Venus shares your Sun sign, what you love and who you are point the same way. When it sits a sign or two away, your heart has a different flavour from your character — the Aries whose Venus is in Pisces, all fire on the outside and pure romance within.

Your reading goes further than a line, but the table is a fair first look — and a good way to understand a partner, too.

Strong and Weak Venus Signs

Traditional astrology gives every planet signs where it works easily and signs where it struggles. Venus rules Taurus and Libra and is exalted in Pisces; in these it expresses love and taste naturally and gracefully. It is in detriment in Aries and Scorpio, the signs of Mars, and in its fall in Virgo, where its warmth is checked by caution and analysis.

A Venus in a difficult sign is not a curse on your love life. It means love is expressed less conventionally and usually needs more awareness to flourish — and some of the most devoted partners have exactly such a Venus.

The House of Venus: Where Love and Pleasure Play Out

The sign shows how you love; the house shows where Venus does its work. In the seventh house, love comes through partnership and marriage; in the fifth, through romance, creativity and fun; in the tenth, through work that brings beauty or harmony to others; in the second, through possessions, comfort and money well earned.

The house needs your birth time. The planets in houses reading covers Venus and every other planet in its house, and your birth chart shows the whole wheel.

Born With Venus Retrograde

Venus turns retrograde for about six weeks every nineteen months or so, which makes it the least often retrograde of the planets that do — about one person in fourteen is born with it. A retrograde Venus at birth turns love and values inward. Trust can take longer, old relationships may return, and personal taste often runs against the fashion of the day.

It is not a sign of an unhappy love life. Many people with a retrograde Venus love deeply and loyally; they simply come to it in their own way and their own time. Your reading marks Venus as retrograde if it was.

Venus and Mars: Love and Desire

Venus is half of the story. Where Venus attracts, receives and values, Mars pursues, desires and acts. Read together, the two describe your romantic and sexual nature as a whole: a Venus in Cancer with Mars in Aries wants tenderness but goes after it boldly.

Between two people, Venus and Mars are where chemistry is measured. One person's Venus on the other's Mars is the classic signature of attraction, and a synastry chart finds every such contact between two charts.

Venus in Vedic Astrology: Shukra

In Jyotish, Venus is Shukra, the teacher of the asuras, and the karaka — the natural significator — of marriage, the spouse, comfort and the arts. Astrologers read it closely in any question of marriage, alongside the seventh house and the Navamsa chart.

Because Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about twenty-four degrees behind the tropical one, Shukra usually falls one sign earlier in your kundli. The two systems can even disagree on its strength — a Venus at home in one zodiac can be debilitated in the other — which is why each should be read by its own rules.

A Worked Example: My Own Venus Sign

Here is Venus in my own birth chart, read the way the calculator reads yours. Every number is the real one.

  1. The SignMy Venus is at 16°01'02" Libra. Libra is one of the two signs Venus rules, so it is at home here — gracious, fair, at its best in partnership.
  2. Close to the SunMy Sun is at 21°11'44" Libra, about five degrees away. Venus and the Sun in the same sign: what I value and who I am point the same way.
  3. The HouseVenus falls in my second house, with the Sun, Mercury, Saturn and Pluto. The second house is money, possessions and values, so Venus's grace goes into what I build and keep.
  4. Direct, Not RetrogradeVenus was moving forward at my birth, at a little over a degree a day — its normal pace.
  5. The Vedic ViewIn the sidereal zodiac the same Venus is at 22°24' Virgo — Shukra in its sign of debilitation, and close to the Sun. A Venus at home in the Western chart and debilitated in the Vedic one is a good example of why I read each system by its own rules, and never mix them.

Taken together, the Western chart shows a Venus that is strong and comfortable in its own sign, working through the house of resources. The Vedic chart asks a different question — how Shukra will deliver — and gives a more careful answer. Both are true in their own language, and a full reading needs both.
