What Your Sun Sign Says About You

Every year the Sun makes one full circle of the zodiac, spending about a month in each of the twelve signs. The sign it was crossing on the day you were born is your Sun sign — the one you already know, the one in every horoscope column. In Western astrology it is the centre of the chart: the self you are growing into, the thing that makes you feel most alive.

The Sun is not the whole person, and nobody is "just a Gemini". But the Sun sign is the steady note under everything else. Other placements may hide it for a while, yet over a lifetime people tend to grow more like their Sun sign, not less. When you are doing what you love, the Sun is what others see.

What you get from the calculator above: your Sun sign and its exact degree — settled correctly even if you were born on the cusp — the house your Sun falls in, its ruling planet, element and mode, and a reading of your Sun sign: who you are, your strengths and weak spots, your work and your way of loving, with your Sun, Moon and rising sign side by side.

Zodiac Sign Dates for All Twelve Sun Signs

These are the usual dates for the twelve Sun signs. They are averages: the Sun can enter a sign a day earlier or later depending on the year, which is why the calculator works from your own birth date rather than from this table.

Born on the Cusp? Why the Date Alone Is Not Always Enough

If your birthday falls on one of the changeover dates — 20 April, 21 June or 22 December, say — you have probably read two different answers. The reason is simple: the calendar and the Sun do not keep perfect step. Leap years and the slightly uneven length of the year move each changeover by up to a day, and the exact moment can fall in the morning in one year and the evening the next.

Despite the popular idea, nobody is "half Taurus, half Gemini". At any given minute the Sun is in one sign or the other. The calculator finds the Sun's exact degree for your birth moment, so a cusp birth is settled cleanly. If you were born on a changeover day, enter your birth time and place for a certain answer; a Sun at 29° of a sign often shows a touch of the next one, but it belongs to the sign it is in.

Fire, Earth, Air and Water Sun Signs

The twelve signs fall into four elements, and the element of your Sun sign tells you a great deal before anything else is read.

  1. Fire: Aries, Leo, SagittariusEnthusiasm, courage and the urge to act. Fire Suns light up a room and lose interest once the excitement fades.
  2. Earth: Taurus, Virgo, CapricornPractical sense, patience and results you can touch. Earth Suns build slowly and keep what they build.
  3. Air: Gemini, Libra, AquariusIdeas, talk and people. Air Suns think a problem through out loud and need conversation like others need food.
  4. Water: Cancer, Scorpio, PiscesFeeling, intuition and loyalty. Water Suns know what a person feels before a word is spoken.

The element of the Sun is only one vote. Count the elements of all your planets and the picture can change completely — your dominant element may not be your Sun's.

The House Your Sun Falls In: Where You Shine

Two people with the same Sun sign can lead very different lives, and the house of the Sun is often the reason. The sign shows how you shine; the house shows where. A Sun in the tenth house wants to be seen in its work; in the fourth it shines at home; in the seventh it comes alive through a partner; in the twelfth it does its best work behind the scenes.

The house needs your birth time and place, and your result shows it whenever you give them. Every other planet has a house too — the planets in houses reading goes through them all, and your free birth chart shows the whole wheel.

Sun Sign, Moon Sign and Rising Sign

If your Sun sign has never felt quite right, you are not alone, and you are not doing it wrong. The Sun is one of three placements astrologers read first. The Moon sign is what you need to feel safe and how you react when nobody is watching. The rising sign is how you come across to people who do not know you yet.

A reserved Leo usually has a quiet Moon or a cautious rising sign; a bubbly Capricorn often has Gemini or Sagittarius rising. Your result shows the Big Three side by side, so you can see which of them is doing the talking.

Western Sun Sign and Vedic Sun Sign

Western astrology measures the zodiac from the March equinox, so its signs stay tied to the seasons: Aries always begins around 21 March. Vedic astrology measures from the stars, and the two zodiacs are now about twenty-four degrees apart. That is why the Sun enters Vedic Mesha (Aries) around 14 April — the date of Mesha Sankranti — and Makara (Capricorn) around 14 January, Makar Sankranti, rather than on 22 December.

So only people born in roughly the last week of a Western sign keep the same Sun sign in Vedic astrology; everyone born earlier in the sign has the sign before it. There is a second difference, too: in India your rashi is your Moon sign, not your Sun sign. If that is what you are looking for, the Moon sign calculator gives your Vedic rashi and nakshatra.

Sun Sign Compatibility: A First Look, Not the Last Word

Sun signs of the same element usually understand each other without effort — two fire signs, two water signs. Fire and air feed each other, as do earth and water. Signs that sit square to each other, such as Aries and Cancer, bring friction and attraction in equal measure.

But a relationship is two whole charts meeting. The Moon, Venus, Mars and the rising sign often matter more than the two Suns, and a "bad" Sun sign match can be a great relationship. A synastry chart compares every planet in both charts and shows where you really meet.

A Worked Example: My Own Sun Sign

Here is the Sun of my own birth chart, read the way the calculator reads yours. Every number is the real one.

  1. The Sign and the DegreeMy Sun is at 21°11'44" Libra — well inside the sign, so there is no cusp question to settle. Libra is an air sign and a cardinal one: it starts things through people, conversation and agreements.
  2. The RulerLibra is ruled by Venus, and my Venus is at 16°01'02" Libra — in its own sign, five degrees from the Sun. When the ruler of the Sun sign sits strong in the same sign, the Sun's style comes through clear and unmixed.
  3. The Sun's DignityBoth Western and Vedic astrologers count Libra as the Sun's weakest sign — its fall, or debilitation. The Sun is the self and Libra is the sign of the other, so a Libra Sun finds itself through partners, clients and fairness rather than by standing alone.
  4. The HouseThe Sun falls in my second house, together with Mercury, Venus, Saturn and Pluto. Where the Sun sits, life shines; in the second house, that means money, values and the work of the voice.
  5. The Big ThreeSun in Libra, Moon in Virgo and Virgo rising. Two of the three are Virgo, so people meet the careful Virgo first and discover the Libra only later — a clear example of why the Sun sign alone rarely describes anyone fully.
  6. The Vedic SunIn the sidereal zodiac my Sun is at 27°35' Virgo, not in Libra at all. Like most people born before the last week of a Western sign, I have the sign before it in Jyotish.

The Sun keeps moving after birth, too. In my progressed chart it left Libra for Scorpio when I was about nine, which is one more reason a Sun sign should be read with the rest of the chart, never on its own.

Questions

Sun Sign: Questions People Ask

Your zodiac sign, or Sun sign, is the sign of the zodiac the Sun was passing through on the day you were born. It is the sign you read in a horoscope column. Enter your date of birth above — with the time and place if you were born near the change of sign — and the calculator gives the exact sign and degree.

None. Sun sign, star sign and zodiac sign all mean the same thing in Western astrology: the sign the Sun occupied when you were born.

It means you were born within a day or so of the Sun moving from one sign into the next. The Sun is always in one sign or the other, never both; the dates printed in magazines are averages, and the real changeover shifts by up to a day from year to year. Your birth time and place settle which side you fall on.

Because the Sun enters each sign at a slightly different moment every year, and many lists round the dates. A calculator that uses your actual date, time and place does not depend on any list.

Usually not. The Sun stays in a sign for about a month, so the date is enough. The time matters only if you were born on one of the days when the Sun changes sign — then it decides your sign.

Often not. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac used here, so the Sun enters each Vedic sign around the middle of the month — Mesha around 14 April instead of Aries on 21 March. And when Indians say rashi, they mean the Moon sign, not the Sun sign.

They answer different questions. The Sun sign is who you are at the core; the rising sign is how you come across and where your houses begin. Astrologers read them together with the Moon sign — the Big Three.

It gives a first hint. Signs of the same element, or of complementary elements, usually understand each other easily. But compatibility is decided by the whole of two charts — the Moon, Venus, Mars and the rising sign as much as the Sun.
