Karakas · Swamsha · Arudhas

Your Birth Chart, Read the Jaimini Way

A Jaimini chart looks like any other kundli at first glance — the same twelve signs, the same planets in the same places. The difference is in how it is read. Every planet carries a chara karaka label that says what it stands for in your life, the signs aspect each other as whole signs, and three companion charts — the Karakamsha, the Swamsha and the Arudha chart — open views the ordinary birth chart does not give. This calculator draws all four for you, each with a table of its placements.

Same Sky, Different Lens

What Makes a Chart a Jaimini Chart

The Jaimini Sutras do not ask you to cast a different horoscope. They ask you to read the same one by different rules. In Parashari astrology a planet's role comes from the houses it rules; in Jaimini it comes from its degree. The planet furthest advanced in its sign becomes the Atmakaraka, the king of the chart, and the rest fall in line behind it as its ministers and relatives.

Aspects change too. Instead of each planet casting its own glance, whole signs look at each other by rashi drishti, and every planet shares the aspects of its sign. Time is read through chara dasha, the periods of the signs. A Jaimini chart is the birth chart dressed for this way of reading.

The Labels on the Planets

Reading the Karaka Labels

On the Jaimini rashi chart each planet carries a short label — AK, AmK, DK and so on. These are the seven chara karakas, ranked by how far each planet has travelled through its sign. They change from chart to chart: Saturn may be the Atmakaraka in one person's chart and the Darakaraka in another's.

The seven chara karakas and what each one speaks for
LabelKarakaSpeaks For
AK Atmakaraka The soul, the self
AmK Amatyakaraka Career and the mind that serves the soul
BK Bhratrikaraka Siblings, courage and the guru
MK Matrikaraka The mother, home and comforts
PK Putrakaraka Children, intelligence and followers
GK Gnatikaraka Rivals, obstacles and illness
DK Darakaraka The spouse and partnerships

Reading the labels is the first step of any Jaimini judgement. Where the Atmakaraka sits, and whether the Amatyakaraka joins or aspects it, tells you how the soul's purpose meets the work of life. The sign of the Darakaraka and its link to the Upapada describe the spouse.

The Atmakaraka's Navamsa

Karakamsha and Swamsha Chart

Both charts begin from one sign: the sign the Atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa. The Karakamsha chart sets that sign as the ascendant of the birth chart, so every planet is read by its house from the Karakamsha. The Swamsha chart sets the same sign as the ascendant of the Navamsa chart itself.

Which one Jaimini meant has been argued for centuries. Many astrologers read the Karakamsha in the birth chart for work, skills and worldly inclinations, and the Swamsha in the Navamsa for the inner nature, the spiritual path and marriage. The 12th from the Swamsha is read for the soul's final direction — the ishta devata, the form of the divine the person is drawn to. Both are drawn here so you can read them side by side; the Karakamsha has a page of its own as well.

The Image of Each House

The Arudha Chart

Every house has an arudha, or pada — the way that house shows itself to the world. The Arudha chart places all twelve padas in the houses where they fall. The Arudha Lagna (AL) is your public image; the Upapada (UL) is the image of marriage; the A10 is how your career is seen; the A7 how partners and business appear.

The planets in the houses of the Arudha chart show what the world notices about you, which is not always what is true. A chart can have a modest lagna and a brilliant Arudha Lagna — the person seen as far more successful than they feel — or the other way round.

Putting It to Use

Reading the Four Together

  1. Start With the Jaimini Rashi ChartFind the Atmakaraka and the Amatyakaraka, and see which signs aspect them.
  2. Turn to the KarakamshaThe planets in it and in the 10th from it point to the work the soul is drawn to.
  3. Look Inward With the SwamshaIts ascendant, its 7th and its 12th describe the inner nature, marriage and spiritual leaning.
  4. Finish With the Arudha ChartSee how all of this appears to the world — the AL for status, the UL for marriage.

Questions

Jaimini Chart — Common Questions

A Jaimini chart is the birth chart read by the rules of Maharishi Jaimini. The signs and houses are the same as in a Parashari chart, but each planet is labelled by its chara karaka — Atmakaraka, Amatyakaraka and so on — and the chart is read with sign aspects, arudha padas and chara dasha. Alongside it, Jaimini astrologers use the Karakamsha, Swamsha and Arudha charts.

The Swamsha chart is the Navamsa (D9) chart turned so that the sign holding the Atmakaraka becomes its ascendant. Jaimini astrologers read it for the inner nature, the spiritual path and matters of marriage, and many read the 12th from the Swamsha for the soul's final direction.

Both start from the same sign — the Navamsa sign of the Atmakaraka. The Karakamsha chart places that sign as the ascendant of the birth chart; the Swamsha places it as the ascendant of the Navamsa chart. Traditions differ on which the Jaimini Sutras meant, so careful astrologers read both.

The Arudha chart places the twelve arudha padas — the images of the twelve houses — in the houses where they fall. It shows how each area of your life appears to the world: the Arudha Lagna for your public image, the Upapada for marriage, the A10 for career standing.

They are the chara karakas. The planet with the highest degree in its sign becomes the Atmakaraka (AK), the next the Amatyakaraka (AmK), and so on down to the Darakaraka (DK), the planet with the lowest degree. Each labels what that planet speaks for in your life.

Marriage is read from several points at once: the Darakaraka on the Jaimini rashi chart, the Upapada on the Arudha chart, and the 7th from the Swamsha. When the three agree, the reading is clear; when they differ, the Upapada is usually given the final word.

Yes. All four charts — the Jaimini rashi chart, the Karakamsha, the Swamsha and the Arudha chart — with their tables are free.
