Chara Karakas Give Every Planet in Your Chart a Role

In most of astrology a planet's job is fixed. Venus is the spouse, the Sun is the father, Jupiter is the teacher — for everyone, in every chart. Jaimini added something more personal. He ranked the planets in your chart by how far each had travelled through its sign, and gave each rank a role. The planet furthest along becomes the Atmakaraka, the one your soul identifies with. The planet least far along becomes the Darakaraka, the one that describes your spouse. In between sit the karakas of career, siblings, mother, children and rivals. These are the chara karakas — the moving significators — and almost every Jaimini technique, from the Karakamsha to chara dasha, is built on them. This calculator finds all of yours, in both the 7-karaka and the 8-karaka scheme.

Moving and Fixed

What Chara Karakas Are, and How They Differ From Sthira Karakas

Every planet in Jyotish has natural significations that hold for everyone. The Sun stands for the father, the Moon for the mother, Mars for siblings, Jupiter for children, Venus for the spouse. These are the sthira karakas, the fixed significators, and they are the same in your chart as in anyone else's.

The Jaimini Sutras add a second layer that belongs to you alone. The planets are ranked by degree, and the ranking decides which planet speaks for the soul, which for career, which for the spouse. In one chart Saturn is the Darakaraka and describes the partner; in another it is the Atmakaraka and describes the person themselves. That is the meaning of chara — moving — and it is why a Jaimini reading can feel so individual.

The two layers are read together. The sthira karaka gives the general principle; the chara karaka tells you which planet carries that principle in this particular life.

The Method

How Chara Karakas Are Calculated

The rule is short. Take each planet's longitude and keep only the part inside its sign — the degrees, minutes and seconds it has crossed since the sign began. Which sign it is in does not matter. Then rank the planets from the highest figure to the lowest.

A Moon at 27° of Taurus outranks a Sun at 22° of Leo, even though Leo comes later in the zodiac. A Mars at 2° of Scorpio sits near the bottom of the list, however strong it is by sign. The planet at the top is the Atmakaraka, the next the Amatyakaraka, and so on down to the Darakaraka.

Rahu, when it is included, needs one adjustment. It moves backwards through the zodiac, so the distance it has travelled in its sign is counted from the end: thirty degrees minus the degree it shows. A Rahu at 17° of Capricorn has travelled 13° in Jaimini terms, and is ranked on that figure. Because the ranking turns on degrees, an accurate birth time matters most when two planets sit close together — a few minutes can swap them.

The Roles

The Karakas and What Each One Rules

Read from the top, the karakas move from the self outwards — career and counsel, siblings, mother, children, rivals — and end with the partner, the person the Atmakaraka meets in the other.

The Jaimini chara karakas in order of degree, and what each one rules
KarakaRank by DegreeWhat It Rules

Atmakaraka (AK)

Highest The soul and the self — the planet whose lessons run through the whole life.

Amatyakaraka (AmK)

Second Career, counsel and the work you do in the world.

Bhratrikaraka (BK)

Third Siblings, courage and, in many readings, the teacher.

Matrikaraka (MK)

Fourth The mother, education, home and property.

Pitrikaraka (PiK)

Fifth, 8-karaka scheme only The father and the ancestors.

Putrakaraka (PuK)

Fifth (sixth with 8 karakas) Children, intelligence and creativity.

Gnatikaraka (GK)

Second lowest Rivals, disputes, illness and obstacles — and the cousins and relatives around them.

Darakaraka (DK)

Lowest The spouse and every close partnership.

Seven or Eight

The 7-Karaka and 8-Karaka Schemes

Parashara describes both. In the 7-karaka scheme the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn are ranked, and the fifth karaka is the Putrakaraka for children. In the 8-karaka scheme Rahu joins the ranking and a Pitrikaraka for the father is added before the Putrakaraka. Ketu is left out of both.

Adding Rahu changes more than one row. Once Rahu takes a place, every planet below it moves down one, so the Darakaraka of one scheme can be a different planet from the Darakaraka of the other. Most Jaimini astrologers read the 7-karaka scheme as the main one and turn to the 8-karaka scheme for questions about the father, or where Rahu is strongly placed. The calculator gives you both so you can see exactly where they differ.

Where the two schemes part. If Rahu's reversed degree falls between two planets, every karaka below that point changes. A chart whose Darakaraka is Saturn in the 7-karaka scheme can show Saturn as Darakaraka in the 8-karaka scheme too — or hand that role to another planet, if Rahu ranks below it.

The King of the Chart

The Atmakaraka and the Karakamsha

Jaimini calls the Atmakaraka the king, and the other karakas its ministers. Its nature shows what the soul has come to learn: a Saturn Atmakaraka often carries lessons of patience and duty, a Venus Atmakaraka lessons about desire and relationship, a Sun Atmakaraka lessons about ego and authority. When the Atmakaraka is well placed, the ministers work for it; when it is troubled, even strong karakas struggle to deliver.

The sign the Atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa is called the Karakamsha. It is one of the most important points in Jaimini astrology — the lagna of the soul. The planets placed in it and aspecting it describe the person's deepest inclinations, from spiritual leanings to the kind of work that truly satisfies them.

Putting It to Work

Reading the Karakas Together

A karaka is never read alone. The relationship between the Atmakaraka and the Amatyakaraka shows how well the person and their work fit each other: when the two are joined, or aspect each other by Jaimini rashi drishti, the career tends to feel like a calling. The relationship between the Atmakaraka and the Darakaraka shows how the person and their partner meet — as allies, as teachers to each other, or as opposites.

The houses matter as well. A Darakaraka in a kendra from the Atmakaraka is a strong bond; one in the 6th, 8th or 12th from it tends to bring distance or effort into the relationship. The same test works for every pair — the Matrikaraka for the mother, the Putrakaraka for children, the Gnatikaraka for the obstacles the person has to face.

  1. Atmakaraka and AmatyakarakaHow closely the self and the work are tied — the career that feels chosen, or merely taken.
  2. Atmakaraka and DarakarakaHow the partner meets the self — support, lesson or contrast.
  3. Karakas and the KarakamshaWhich karakas sit in or see the Karakamsha, and so come closest to the soul's own purpose.

Timing

Chara Karakas in Chara Dasha

The karakas come alive in time through chara dasha, Jaimini's sign-based dasha. When a sign holding a karaka runs its period — or a sign that aspects it — the matters of that karaka come forward. A period of the sign holding the Amatyakaraka often brings a turn in career; a period of the sign holding the Darakaraka, or aspecting it, is a natural window for marriage.

That is why the karakas are the first thing to find in any Jaimini reading. Without them, chara dasha is a list of signs and dates; with them, each period has a subject.

Questions

Chara Karakas — Common Questions

Chara karakas are the variable significators of Jaimini astrology. The planets in your chart are ranked by how far each has travelled through its sign, and each rank carries a role: the highest becomes the Atmakaraka, the soul of the chart, and the lowest becomes the Darakaraka, the spouse. Because the ranking depends on your own chart, the roles change from person to person — which is why they are called chara, or moving.

Take the degree each planet has crossed in its sign, ignoring the sign itself. The planet with the highest degree is the Atmakaraka, the next is the Amatyakaraka, and so on down to the Darakaraka with the lowest. In the 8-karaka scheme Rahu is included, and because it moves backwards its degree is counted from the end of its sign — thirty minus the degree it shows.

Both come from Parashara. The 7-karaka scheme uses the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn and is the one most Jaimini astrologers work with for general reading. The 8-karaka scheme adds Rahu and a Pitrikaraka for the father. The calculator shows the 7-karaka scheme first and the 8-karaka scheme one click below, so you can compare them.

Sthira karakas are fixed and the same for everyone — the Sun always signifies the father, the Moon the mother, Venus the spouse. Chara karakas change with every chart, because they come from the degrees of the planets. Jaimini astrology uses the chara karakas for the person's own story and the sthira karakas as a general background.

The Atmakaraka is the planet the soul identifies with — the one whose lessons run through the whole life. Its sign, its house and especially its Navamsa sign, called the Karakamsha, describe what the person is here to work out. Every other karaka is read in relation to it.

Usually for one of three reasons: a different ayanamsa, a different scheme (7 or 8 karakas), or a birth time that moves a fast planet across a degree. The karakas depend on degrees, so two planets that are close together can swap places with a small change in any of these.

Yes. Both karaka schemes, with each karaka's planet, sign, degree, nakshatra, house and Navamsa sign, are free, with nothing held back behind a payment.
