Rashi Drishti Shows Which Parts of Your Chart Talk to Each Other

In Parashari astrology it is the planet that casts an aspect. Maharishi Jaimini looked at it the other way round: the signs aspect each other, and a planet simply takes on the aspects of the sign it stands in. This is rashi drishti, the sign aspect, and it runs through everything in the Jaimini system — the chara dasha, the karakas, the arudha padas and the raja yogas. This calculator works out the rashi drishti of all twelve signs of your chart and shows which planets aspect each other and which ones look at your lagna.

The Aspect of the Signs

What Rashi Drishti Is

The Jaimini Sutras open their teaching on aspects with a short rule: the signs aspect the signs in front of them, leaving out the one next door. From that one line comes a complete map of how the twelve signs look at each other. Every sign aspects exactly three others, and every planet in a sign aspects whatever that sign aspects.

The practical effect is simple and powerful. Two planets in signs linked by rashi drishti are connected, however far apart they sit, and they influence each other's results. A house whose sign is aspected by strong planets is fed by them; one aspected by no planet at all is left to what it holds itself.

One Rule, Three Kinds of Sign

The Rule of Sign Aspects

The twelve signs fall into three groups of four — movable (chara), fixed (sthira) and dual (dwiswabhava) — and the rule of rashi drishti follows those groups.

  1. Movable Signs Aspect Fixed SignsAries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn aspect the fixed signs, all except the one right beside them. Counted from a movable sign, that is the 5th, 8th and 11th.
  2. Fixed Signs Aspect Movable SignsTaurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius aspect the movable signs, all except the one right beside them. Counted from a fixed sign, that is the 3rd, 6th and 9th.
  3. Dual Signs Aspect Each OtherGemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces aspect the other three dual signs. Counted from a dual sign, that is the 4th, 7th and 10th.

Rashi drishti always works both ways. The three signs a sign aspects are exactly the three that aspect it back, so every link in your chart is mutual.

Two Systems, Two Aspects

Rashi Drishti and Graha Drishti

Graha drishti, the aspect of Parashari astrology, belongs to the planet. Every planet looks at the 7th from itself; Mars adds the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th. The aspect runs one way — Saturn may aspect the Moon without the Moon aspecting Saturn — and its strength depends on the planet casting it.

Rashi drishti belongs to the sign. It is the same for every planet in that sign, whether the Sun or Saturn, and it is always mutual. Parashara himself describes both, but in practice graha drishti is the aspect of Parashari reading and rashi drishti the aspect of Jaimini reading. When you work with chara dasha, karakas or arudhas, it is rashi drishti that counts.

Putting It to Use

How Jaimini Astrologers Use It

Start with the lagna. The planets that aspect your ascendant by rashi drishti shape your body, temperament and direction as much as the planets sitting in it. Then look at the Atmakaraka and Amatyakaraka: when these two are together or in mutual rashi drishti, Jaimini counts it among the strongest raja yogas — the soul and its minister working as one, usually seen in people who rise through their own work.

The same aspect decides much of the rest of Jaimini reading. In chara dasha, a period sign brings forward the planets that aspect it as well as those inside it. On the Arudha Lagna, aspecting planets colour how the world sees you. On the Upapada and the Darakaraka, they describe the spouse and the course of marriage. And on the Karakamsha, the planets in rashi drishti point to the work and inclinations the soul is drawn to.

Rashi drishti is the aspect of one sign on another. In the Jaimini system the signs themselves aspect each other, and every planet standing in a sign shares that sign's aspects. It is the aspect used throughout Jaimini astrology — for chara dasha, for the karakas and for the arudha padas.

Movable signs aspect all fixed signs except the one next to them. Fixed signs aspect all movable signs except the one next to them. Dual signs aspect the other three dual signs. So Aries aspects Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, but not Taurus, which sits beside it.
