Jaimini · Darakaraka

The Planet With the Lowest Degree Holds the Spouse

Jaimini ranks the planets by the degrees they hold inside their signs and gives each rank a role. The planet at the top — the Atmakaraka — carries the soul and its business in this life. The planet at the very bottom carries the spouse, and is called the Darakaraka.

It is one of the most quietly accurate techniques in the whole system, and it works differently from anything in Parashari. The seventh lord is fixed by your ascendant, so every Leo ascendant shares it; the Darakaraka is decided by degrees, so two people born the same morning can have different ones. What it gives you is not the house of marriage but the person: their temperament, their background, and the thing that will draw you to them in the first place.

Seven planets, ranked by degree — the highest is the soul, the lowest the spouse.

The method

How the Darakaraka Is Found

Only the degrees inside a sign are used — the sign itself is set aside for the moment. A planet at 27° of Virgo counts as 27; one at 4° of Aries counts as 4. Rank the seven from highest to lowest and the roles fall out in order, from the soul at the top to the spouse at the bottom.

There is nothing mystical about the position at the bottom. Jaimini's list moves from what is most one's own — the self — outward to what comes from outside, and a spouse is the furthest of those: the person a life takes in from elsewhere. That is the sense in which the lowest degree carries the marriage.

Ties are settled by minutes and seconds of arc, which is why an accurate chart matters even here. When two planets sit within a degree of each other, an astrologer will usually check the reading against events you already know.

Chara karakas

The Seven Chara Karakas, in Order

KarakaRank by degreeWhat it carries
Atmakaraka (AK)HighestThe soul and its work in this life — the single most important planet in a Jaimini reading
Amatyakaraka (AmK)SecondCareer, the mind, and the people who advise you
Bhratrikaraka (BK)ThirdSiblings, courage, and teachers
Matrikaraka (MK)FourthThe mother, property and comfort
Putrakaraka (PK)FifthChildren, learning and creative work
Gnatikaraka (GK)SixthRivals, obstacles, illness and the work of overcoming them
Darakaraka (DK)LowestThe spouse and the marriage

Your result shows the whole table for your own chart, with each planet's degree, sign, house and navamsa — so the Darakaraka can be seen in the company it keeps.

The spouse

What Each Darakaraka Says About the Spouse

Read the planet's own nature first. This is the layer people find uncannily recognisable once they are married.

DarakarakaThe partner it points toWhat the marriage asks
SunConfident, principled, with standing — often older or senior in some wayRoom for their pride, and yours
MoonCaring, attached to family, emotionally presentAttention to moods, on both sides
MarsEnergetic, direct, competitive — frequently in a technical or uniformed lineSomewhere for the heat to go
MercuryYoung in manner, quick, talkative; often younger in yearsConversation, and patience with restlessness
JupiterPrincipled, educated, generous — the classical best DarakarakaLittle; this is the easy one
VenusAttractive, sociable, drawn to comfort and beautyAttention to the relationship itself
SaturnSerious, hardworking, dutiful; the marriage often comes lateTime — warmth arrives slowly and then stays

Then look at the planet's condition. A dignified Darakaraka gives the good side of that description; a debilitated or afflicted one gives the same planet under strain, which is a different marriage entirely.

The meeting

The House It Sits In — Where the Match Is Met

The house tells you the setting: how the two of you are likely to come together, and what part of life the marriage will be worked out in.

  • 1st or 7th — marriage is central to the life; often a partner met directly rather than through arrangement.
  • 4th — through family, through the home, or from the same place you come from.
  • 5th — a love match, or one that begins in study, sport or something creative.
  • 9th — through elders, teachers, travel or community; the classical mark of a fortunate marriage.
  • 10th — through work, or with someone connected to your professional world.
  • 6th, 8th or 12th — a match that needs adjustment: distance, a difference of background, or a long delay before it settles.

Three methods

Reading It Beside the 7th House and the Upapada

Three methods answer the marriage question, and they answer different parts of it. The 7th house and Venus say whether marriage is promised and when. The Upapada Lagna says what the marriage is like and whether it continues. The Darakaraka says who the person is.

When the Darakaraka is also the 7th lord, or sits in the 7th house, the reading is unusually strong and the description of the partner can be given with confidence. When the three disagree, an astrologer reads them in that order — promise first, continuance second, description last — rather than picking the one that says what the client hopes to hear.

Seven or eight

Seven Karakas or Eight, and What It Changes

Two schemes are classical. The seven-karaka scheme uses the Sun through Saturn and is the one used here by default. The eight-karaka scheme adds Rahu, whose degree is counted in reverse because it moves backwards, and inserts a further role between the Matrikaraka and the Putrakaraka. Where Rahu happens to hold a low degree, the two schemes name different Darakarakas.

Neither is wrong. Astrologers who work with charts long enough usually settle on one and test it against marriages they already know. Your result names the scheme it used, so the reading can always be checked against the other.

Questions

Darakaraka — Common Questions

In Jaimini astrology, the planet holding the lowest degree within its sign among the chara karakas. It stands for the spouse: its nature describes the person you marry, and the house it occupies shows where and how the match is met.

Take the degrees each planet holds inside its sign, ignoring the sign itself, and rank the seven chara karaka planets from highest to lowest. The highest is the Atmakaraka; the lowest is the Darakaraka. Some traditions add Rahu as an eighth, counted in reverse.

It describes their nature and what draws you to them — Jupiter a principled, often older partner; Venus an attractive and sociable one; Saturn a serious, hardworking one who arrives late. It is read with the 7th house, Venus and the Navamsa, not alone.

The 7th lord is fixed by your ascendant, so everyone with that lagna shares it. The Darakaraka is decided by degrees and differs from chart to chart. One describes partnership as a department of life; the other describes the person.

No. They are the highest and lowest degrees among the same set, so they are always different. What can happen is that the Darakaraka is also your 7th lord — which makes the reading considerably stronger.

The significator of the spouse sitting in the house of the spouse — marriage tends to be central to that life, and the partner follows the planet's nature closely. The planet's dignity and what aspects it still decide how the marriage goes.

Less than for house-based methods, since the karakas are ranked by planetary degrees. But the Moon moves fast, so a large error can change the order when two planets are close — and the house the Darakaraka occupies does need the time.

Both schemes are classical. The seven-karaka scheme is used here; the eight-karaka scheme adds Rahu with its degree counted in reverse, which can change who holds the lowest place. Your result names the scheme used.
