Your Atmakaraka Is the Planet Your Soul Answers To

Every chart has one planet that has travelled further through its sign than any other. Maharishi Jaimini gave that planet the highest office in the chart and called it the Atmakaraka — the significator of the soul. It is not always the strongest planet or the best placed; it is the one your deepest self identifies with, and the one whose lessons keep returning until they are learnt. A Saturn Atmakaraka keeps meeting duty and delay, a Venus Atmakaraka keeps meeting desire, a Mars Atmakaraka keeps meeting conflict. Its sign in the Navamsa, the Karakamsha, shows where the soul is trying to go. This calculator finds your Atmakaraka and reads it by planet, sign, house and Karakamsha.

The King of the Chart

What the Atmakaraka Means

The Jaimini Sutras describe the chara karakas as a royal court. The Atmakaraka is the king, the Amatyakaraka his minister, and the rest the officers who carry out his will. The comparison is exact in one respect that matters for reading a chart: when the king is steady, the court works; when the king is in trouble, even capable ministers struggle to deliver. A strong career karaka cannot fully compensate for an Atmakaraka that is afflicted.

What the king rules is the inner life. The Atmakaraka describes what you are really after, underneath the goals you would list if asked — the theme that shows up in your choices, your conflicts and your turning points. Astrologers who work with it find that people recognise their Atmakaraka reading quickly, often more readily than their ascendant, because it names a pattern they have already lived.

That is also why the Atmakaraka is read as a lesson rather than a fortune. It does not say whether life will be easy. It says what life keeps asking of you.

The Method

How to Find Your Atmakaraka

Take each planet's position and keep only the part inside its sign — the degrees, minutes and seconds it has crossed since the sign began. Compare the figures. The planet with the highest one is your Atmakaraka. Which sign it sits in makes no difference to the ranking: a Moon at 28° of Aries outranks a Jupiter at 26° of Pisces.

Most Jaimini astrologers use the 7-karaka scheme for the Atmakaraka, comparing only the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn. In the 8-karaka scheme Rahu joins the list, counted backwards from the end of its sign, and can then take the Atmakaraka's place. This calculator reads the Atmakaraka in the 7-karaka scheme; the Chara Karakas section of the same dashboard shows both schemes side by side.

When two planets are close. If the top two planets are within a few minutes of arc of each other, an accurate birth time matters. The faster planet can overtake the slower one within hours, so check the degrees before settling on a reading.

Seven Lessons

The Atmakaraka as Each Planet

The planet that becomes your Atmakaraka sets the subject of your life. Each carries its own lesson, and the lesson is the same in every chart — what changes is how easily it is learnt.

The lesson each planet brings as the Atmakaraka
AtmakarakaThe Subject of LifeThe Lesson

Sun

Self, authority and recognitionTo lead without ego, and to shine without needing to be seen.

Moon

Feeling, care and belongingTo care for others without losing yourself in their needs.

Mars

Strength, will and conflictTo keep the strength and drop the temper.

Mercury

Speech, learning and tradeTo be truthful in word, and to use cleverness honestly.

Jupiter

Wisdom, teaching and guidanceTo live by what you advise others.

Venus

Desire, love and comfortTo enjoy without being ruled by what you enjoy.

Saturn

Duty, work and enduranceTo carry responsibility patiently, without bitterness.

Where the Lesson Is Learnt

Your Atmakaraka in the Houses

The house the Atmakaraka occupies shows where life keeps pulling you — the area in which its lesson is taught. In a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) the lesson is lived in plain view, through the self, the home, partnership or career. In a trikona (the 5th or 9th) it comes through learning, children, dharma and teachers, often gently. In the 6th, 8th or 12th it comes the hard way, through obstacles, upheaval or loss — demanding placements that tend to make unusually capable people.

The sign colours the lesson in the same way. An Atmakaraka in its own or exalted sign learns with less friction; one in a sign of its enemy or debilitation learns through difficulty. Either way, the reading describes a path rather than a verdict.

The Soul's Lagna

The Karakamsha, the Soul's Direction

The sign your Atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa is the Karakamsha. Placed back in the birth chart, it becomes a lagna of its own — the point from which Jaimini reads what the soul is set towards. Of all the techniques built on the Atmakaraka, this is the one astrologers return to most.

Three things are read from it. The planets standing in the Karakamsha, or aspecting it by rashi drishti, describe the direction of your work and inclinations: Jupiter towards teaching and counsel, Venus towards art and the pleasant trades, the Moon towards work with people and their needs. The 2nd sign from the Karakamsha shows how you earn. The 5th sign shows the practice — spiritual or otherwise — that bears fruit for you. Classical texts read the 12th from it for liberation as well.

  1. Planets In or Aspecting ItThe direction your life and work are set in.
  2. The 2nd From ItHow you earn, and your relationship with money.
  3. The 5th From ItThe practice or discipline that steadies you and bears fruit.

Self and Partner

Atmakaraka and Darakaraka

The Atmakaraka and the Darakaraka sit at opposite ends of the karaka list — the highest degree and the lowest. Jaimini reads them as the self and the one the self meets in marriage. How the two planets relate says a great deal about a relationship: natural friends tend to meet as allies, natural enemies as teachers to each other, and a Darakaraka joined with or aspecting the Atmakaraka often marks a partner who is central to the soul's lesson.

Their houses from each other matter too. A Darakaraka in a kendra from the Atmakaraka is a close bond; one in the 6th, 8th or 12th from it tends to bring distance or effort into the marriage.

Timing

When the Atmakaraka Speaks Loudest

The Atmakaraka's lesson runs through the whole life, but some years bring it forward. In the Vimshottari, its own mahadasha and antardasha are the obvious ones. In Jaimini's chara dasha, the periods of the sign it occupies, and of the Karakamsha sign, turn up the volume. People often describe these as the years that changed who they were.

Transits add a finer layer. Saturn or Jupiter crossing the Atmakaraka, or the Karakamsha, tends to coincide with the moments when the lesson is tested or rewarded.

Questions

Atmakaraka — Common Questions

The Atmakaraka is the planet that has travelled furthest through its sign in your birth chart. Jaimini made it the karaka of the soul — the planet your deepest self identifies with, and the one whose lessons run through your whole life. It is the first and most important of the chara karakas.

Look at the degree each planet has crossed in its own sign, ignoring which sign it is. The planet with the highest figure is your Atmakaraka. In the 7-karaka scheme only the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn are compared; in the 8-karaka scheme Rahu is included, counted backwards from the end of its sign. The calculator does this for you from your birth details.

The Karakamsha is the sign your Atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa chart. Jaimini treats it as the lagna of the soul. The planets standing in it or aspecting it describe the direction your life is set in, the 2nd sign from it shows how you earn, and the 5th shows the practice that bears fruit for you.

Neither. The Atmakaraka shows what your soul is here to learn, and every planet carries its own lesson — Saturn patience and duty, Mars the right use of strength, Venus the balance of desire. A well-placed Atmakaraka makes the lesson easier to learn; a troubled one makes it harder, but the lesson is the same.

Only in the 8-karaka scheme, where Rahu is ranked by thirty minus its degree. In the 7-karaka scheme, which most Jaimini astrologers use for the Atmakaraka, Rahu is left out. This calculator reads the Atmakaraka in the 7-karaka scheme.

The Atmakaraka depends on degrees, and planets move slowly, so a small error in birth time rarely changes it — unless two planets sit very close together at the top of the list. The Karakamsha is more sensitive, because the Navamsa sign changes every 3°20′, but for most charts it still holds within a few minutes.

Yes. Your Atmakaraka with its reading by planet, sign, house and Karakamsha, the planets in your Karakamsha, how you earn, the practice that suits you and the full table of karakas are free, with nothing held back behind a payment.
