Your Karakamsha Shows Where Your Soul Is Heading

Your Atmakaraka names the lesson of your life. The Karakamsha shows the direction. It is the sign your Atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa, and Maharishi Jaimini treated it as a second lagna — the lagna of the soul. From it he read the kind of work a person is drawn to, the way they earn, and the practice that brings them peace. Astrologers who use it regularly find it one of the clearest pointers to vocation in the whole chart. This calculator finds your Karakamsha, the planets that shape it, how you earn and the practice that suits you.

The Soul's Lagna

What the Karakamsha Is

The Jaimini Sutras open the discussion of the Karakamsha almost as soon as the Atmakaraka is defined, and for good reason. The Atmakaraka tells you which planet your soul identifies with; the Karakamsha tells you where that planet is trying to take you. One is the traveller, the other the road.

The Navamsa is traditionally the chart of dharma and of the inner life, so the Atmakaraka's position there carries more weight than an ordinary placement. Once that sign is found, it is treated as a lagna in its own right: the houses are counted from it, the planets in it and aspecting it are read, and the result describes vocation and inclination with a directness the birth lagna often lacks.

The Method

How to Find Your Karakamsha

Two steps. First find your Atmakaraka: compare the degrees each planet has crossed in its own sign and take the highest. Then look up the sign that planet occupies in your Navamsa (D9) chart. That sign is your Karakamsha.

Place it back in the birth chart and it falls in one of your twelve houses — this shows the area of life through which the soul's direction is expressed. Its lord adds a further layer: where the lord stands shows what supports that direction.

Birth time matters more here. Each Navamsa sign covers only 3°20′ of a zodiac sign. If your Atmakaraka lies close to the edge of a Navamsa division, a few minutes of error in the birth time can shift the Karakamsha to the neighbouring sign.

Livelihood and Practice

The 2nd and 5th From the Karakamsha

Counted from the Karakamsha, two signs are read with special care. The 2nd shows how you earn — the kind of income that comes naturally, and how firmly money stays with you. Benefics here make earning smoother; nodes and malefics give income that is irregular or unconventional. An empty 2nd sends the reader back to the Karakamsha itself and the 10th house of the birth chart.

The 5th shows the practice that bears fruit for you: the discipline, study or worship that steadies the mind, and the kind of intelligence you bring to it. The Sun here favours regular practice at fixed hours, Mars practice with effort in it, Mercury study and understanding, Jupiter faith and scripture.

  1. The Karakamsha ItselfThe direction your life and work are set in.
  2. The 2nd From ItHow you earn, and your relationship with money.
  3. The 5th From ItThe practice that steadies you and bears fruit.

Liberation

The 12th From the Karakamsha

The classical texts go one step further and read the 12th sign from the Karakamsha for moksha — the soul's final release — and for the form of the divine a person is naturally drawn to worship. Ketu here is the traditional mark of a strong pull towards liberation. Many astrologers treat this as the deepest layer of the Karakamsha and read it only when the question turns spiritual.

Two Names

Karakamsha and Swamsha

You will meet both words in Jaimini literature. Both refer to the Atmakaraka's Navamsa sign. A common usage keeps Karakamsha for that sign read in the birth chart, with the birth-chart planets around it, and Swamsha for the same sign read inside the Navamsa. The sign never changes; only the chart it is read in does. This calculator reads the Karakamsha in the birth chart.

Questions

Karakamsha — Common Questions

The Karakamsha is the sign your Atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa chart. Jaimini treats it as a lagna of its own — the lagna of the soul — and reads from it the direction your life is set in: the kind of work you are suited to, how you earn, and the practice that steadies you.

First find your Atmakaraka, the planet with the highest degree in its sign. Then see which sign that planet occupies in your Navamsa (D9) chart. That sign is your Karakamsha. Placed back in the birth chart, it falls in one of your twelve houses, and the planets in it or aspecting it are read from there. The calculator does all of this from your birth details.

Both names are used for the Atmakaraka's Navamsa sign. Some astrologers keep Karakamsha for that sign read in the birth chart and Swamsha for the same sign read in the Navamsa itself. The sign is the same either way; only the chart it is read in differs.

A planet standing in the Karakamsha, or aspecting it by sign, colours the direction of your life and work. Jupiter turns you towards teaching and counsel, Venus towards the arts and the pleasant trades, Mercury towards writing and commerce, Mars towards engineering, surgery or the forces, the Sun towards authority and public office.

The 2nd sign from the Karakamsha shows how you earn and your relationship with money. The 5th shows the practice — spiritual or otherwise — that bears fruit for you, and the kind of intelligence you bring to it. Classical texts also read the 12th from it for liberation.

The Karakamsha is more sensitive to birth time than the Atmakaraka, because a Navamsa sign lasts only 3°20′. If your Atmakaraka sits near the edge of a Navamsa division, a few minutes of error can move the Karakamsha to the next sign. For most charts it holds.

Yes. Your Karakamsha sign with its house and lord, the planets in or aspecting it with their readings, how you earn and the practice that suits you are all free, and your full Atmakaraka reading is one click away.
