KP Dasha Uses the Same Clock, Read a Different Way

KP did not invent a new dasha. It kept the Vimshottari — the 120-year cycle that starts from the Moon's nakshatra at birth — and changed two things about it. It calculates the periods on the KP ayanamsa, so the dates line up with the cusps and sub lords of the KP chart. And it judges each period by the houses its lord signifies, not by whether the planet is a benefic or a malefic. A Saturn period can be the best years of one life and a Jupiter period the hardest of another, and KP can tell you in advance which it will be. This calculator runs your KP dasha from mahadasha down to pran, with today's period marked at every level.

The Clock

KP Dasha Starts From the Moon's KP Position

The Vimshottari divides 120 years among the nine planets in a fixed order — Ketu, Venus, the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury — each ruling for its own span of years. Where your cycle begins depends on the nakshatra the Moon occupied when you were born: the lord of that nakshatra opens your life, and the part of its period already used up is set by how far the Moon had travelled through the star.

KP accepts all of this unchanged. What changes is the zodiac the Moon is measured against. A KP chart is cast on the KP ayanamsa, so the KP dasha has to start from the Moon's KP position. Running the periods on one ayanamsa and the cusps on another would leave the two out of step, and in a system that times events by matching period lords to cusp significators, being out of step by even a few weeks is enough to miss the event.

The Zodiac

Why the KP Ayanamsa Moves Your Dasha Dates

Each nakshatra is 13°20′ wide, and the Moon's place inside it decides how much of the first period was left at birth. Move the Moon by a few minutes of arc — the gap between KP Old and Lahiri, for instance — and the balance of that first period changes. Every period after it slides by the same amount, so the whole timeline shifts.

The shift is small in years but large in practice. A bhukti boundary that falls on 3 March on the Lahiri ayanamsa may fall in late February or mid-March on KP Old. For broad life reading that makes no difference. For KP timing, where an event is pinned to the bhukti and antara whose lords signify the matter, it can decide whether a prediction lands.

That is why the dashboard keeps two separate dasha sections. Your Vedic dasha runs on your Vedic ayanamsa, Lahiri by default. Your KP dasha runs on your KP ayanamsa, KP Old by default. Changing one in Chart Settings never touches the other.

The Levels

KP Dasha Levels: Dasha, Bhukti, Antara and Below

Every period divides into nine smaller ones in the same order and proportions as the whole cycle. KP names the levels differently from the Parashari texts, but they are the same divisions.

The levels of the Vimshottari dasha in KP terms and what each decides
LevelParashari NameWhat It Decides

Dasha

Mahadasha The ground of the years — which matters of life are in play at all.

Bhukti

Antardasha Which of those matters comes forward, over months.

Antara

Pratyantardasha The weeks in which the event is most likely to happen.

Sookshma and Pran

Sookshma and prana dasha Days and hours — used with the transit of the Sun and Moon to fix a date.

All three must agree. KP names an event when the dasha, bhukti and antara lords all signify the houses of the matter. A strong dasha lord with a bhukti lord that signifies nothing relevant gives a wait, not an event.

The Verdict

How KP Judges a Period

Ask a Parashari astrologer about a Saturn mahadasha and the first answer will be about Saturn — its strength, its sign, whether it is a friend of the ascendant lord. KP sets all of that aside. It asks one question of every period lord: which houses does it signify in this chart? The answer is found in the significator tables, and it is the only thing that decides what the period brings.

So the reading of a period is a reading of its houses. A dasha lord signifying the 2nd, 6th, 10th and 11th is a working period — jobs, promotions, income. One signifying the 2nd, 7th and 11th brings partnership and marriage. One heavy with the 8th and 12th brings change, expense or distance, which can be loss or foreign travel depending on the question. The planet's own nature only colours how the results arrive: Saturn slowly and with effort, Mars quickly and with force, Venus with comfort.

The Substance

The Star Lord Speaks First

A period lord gives the results of the planet in whose nakshatra it sits before it gives its own. This one rule explains most of the surprises people meet in their dasha. Jupiter sitting in the star of a planet that holds the 6th, 8th and 12th will spend its sixteen years delivering illness, obstacles and expense before it delivers anything a textbook promises from Jupiter. Saturn in the star of a planet holding the 10th and 11th can be a career-making period.

The sub lord of the period lord then decides how those results end. A dasha lord whose star lord signifies the 7th and whose sub lord signifies the 7th and 11th gives a marriage that stands; the same star lord with a sub lord signifying the 6th and 12th gives a relationship that begins and then strains. The Nadi Astrology section of your dashboard lays out all three levels for every planet, which makes this reading quick.

Mixed Periods

When the Dasha and Bhukti Disagree

Real charts are rarely tidy. A dasha lord may signify the 10th and 11th while the bhukti lord signifies the 8th and 12th. KP reads such a stretch as the dasha's promise delivered through the bhukti's terms: a job that comes with a transfer far from home, income that arrives and goes out again, a promotion won through a difficult change.

The bhukti lord carries more weight for the event itself, because it is closer to the moment. The dasha lord sets the limits of what is possible in those years, and no bhukti can deliver a matter the dasha lord does not signify at all. The antara then narrows the window, and the ruling planets and transits of the Sun and Moon point to the day.

Questions

KP Dasha — Common Questions

It is the Vimshottari dasha — the same 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods used in Parashari astrology — calculated on the KP ayanamsa and judged the KP way. The periods are named mahadasha, bhukti and antara, and each lord is read through the houses it signifies rather than through its general reputation.

The dasha starts from the exact position of the Moon inside its nakshatra, and that position depends on the ayanamsa. KP Old and Lahiri differ by a few minutes of arc, which shifts the balance of the first period and, through it, every period boundary after it — often by a few days, sometimes by a few weeks.

The three main levels of the Vimshottari in KP terms. The dasha, or mahadasha, sets the ground for years; the bhukti, or antardasha, brings part of it forward for months; the antara, or pratyantardasha, fixes it to weeks. KP names an event when the lords of all three signify the houses of the matter.

Not by the planet's nature. KP asks which houses the dasha lord signifies through its star lord and sub lord. A period whose lord signifies the 2nd, 10th and 11th is good for work and income whatever the planet; one whose lord signifies the 6th, 8th and 12th brings effort, obstacles or expense even if the planet is a natural benefic.

KP Old, the Krishnamurti ayanamsa, is the standard and the default here. A section of KP practitioners uses KP New. You can switch in Chart Settings; the choice applies only to the KP section, and your Vedic dasha keeps its own ayanamsa.

Less exact than for the cusps. The dasha depends on the Moon, which moves about a minute of arc every two minutes of time, so a small error in birth time shifts the period dates only slightly. The cusps and significators you read the dasha against are far more sensitive, so an accurate time still matters.

Yes. The full Vimshottari on the KP ayanamsa, from mahadasha down to pran, with the period running today marked at every level, is free, with nothing held back behind a payment.
