Ruling Planets Are the Sky's Answer to the Moment You Ask

Krishnamurti called the ruling planets his most important discovery, and it is easy to see why. A birth chart is fixed; it tells you what a life can hold. The ruling planets belong to the moment of judgement — the instant a question is asked or a chart is opened — and KP holds that the sky at that instant points to the answer. When the planets ruling the moment are the same ones that signify the matter in the birth chart, the indication is treated as firm, and their periods are where the event is timed. This calculator gives you the ruling planets for your birth and for right now, side by side with your KP chart.

The Principle

Why the Moment of Judgement Counts

Every astrologer has noticed it: a client arrives with a question on a particular day, at a particular hour, and the sky at that hour seems to know what is on their mind. Traditional prashna has always worked on this. Krishnamurti gave it a narrow, testable form. He took the planets ruling the moment — through the weekday, the Moon and the rising sign — and found that they repeat the significators of whatever matter is being judged.

That turned an intuition into a working instrument. A KP astrologer who has found three or four planets able to deliver a marriage in a birth chart does not have to guess which of their periods will do it. The ruling planets at the time of judgement pick out the ones that are live, and the others fall away. Where the ruling planets and the significators disagree entirely, the astrologer takes it as a warning to check the birth time, or the question.

This is also why the ruling planets change as you watch. They are not a property of your chart but of the moment, and a question judged in the morning and the same question judged in the evening can show different ruling planets. Both are right for their moment; KP simply asks you to judge once, and trust it.

Who They Are

The Five Ruling Planets

The ruling planets are taken from three things at the moment of judgement: the day, the Moon and the Ascendant for the place where the judgement is made.

The five KP ruling planets and where each comes from
Ruling PlanetWhere It Comes FromHow Fast It Changes

Ascendant Star Lord

The lord of the nakshatra rising at that moment Several times a day

Ascendant Sign Lord

The lord of the sign rising at that moment About every two hours

Moon Star Lord

The lord of the nakshatra the Moon is in About once a day

Moon Sign Lord

The lord of the sign the Moon is in About every two and a half days

Day Lord

The lord of the weekday, counted from sunrise Once a day, at sunrise

The day begins at sunrise. In Jyotish a weekday runs from one sunrise to the next, not from midnight. A question asked at 4 a.m. on a Tuesday is judged under Monday's lord, the Moon.

Strength

Their Order of Strength

The five are not equal. The Ascendant is the most personal point of the moment, and the nakshatra rising carries more weight than the sign, so the Ascendant's star lord leads. The Ascendant's sign lord follows, then the Moon's star lord, then the Moon's sign lord, and the day lord comes last because it holds for a whole day and says least about this particular moment.

Repetition counts for more than position. Five ruling planets drawn from seven possible lords often throw up the same planet twice, and a planet that rules the moment through two channels is stronger than any that appears once. When you compare the ruling planets with your significators, a repeated planet that is also a strong significator of the matter is the one to watch most closely.

  1. Ascendant Star LordThe strongest — the nakshatra rising at the moment you ask.
  2. Ascendant Sign LordThe sign rising, one step broader.
  3. Moon Star LordThe mind of the moment, through its nakshatra.
  4. Moon Sign LordThe Moon's sign, broader again.
  5. Day LordThe weakest alone, but it adds weight to any planet it repeats.

The Shadow Planets

When Rahu and Ketu Join the Ruling Planets

Rahu and Ketu rule no sign and no weekday, but they rule nakshatras — Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha for Rahu, Ashwini, Magha and Mula for Ketu. When the Moon or the Ascendant sits in one of those stars, a node is a ruling planet in its own right.

A node can also enter the ruling planets as an agent. If Rahu or Ketu occupies the sign of one of the ruling planets, or is joined with one of them, it represents that planet and is added to the list — and KP treats it as stronger than the planet it represents. Many experienced KP astrologers go further and replace the planet with the node when timing, because the node tends to deliver the event before the planet does.

A Caution

Retrograde Ruling Planets

A ruling planet moving backwards cannot deliver while it is retrograde. In KP practice such a planet is set aside when timing an event, and the answer is looked for among the others. If the matter depends heavily on the retrograde planet, the event is expected only after it turns direct — which gives a useful timing clue of its own.

The same caution applies one level down. A ruling planet in the star of a retrograde planet tends to bring delays or a matter that comes, goes and returns. The dashboard marks retrograde planets so you can see at a glance which ruling planets to hold back.

Putting It to Work

Confirmation, Timing and Rectification

Confirmation. Once the sub lord of a cusp has promised a matter and the significators have been listed, the ruling planets are laid beside them. If two or three ruling planets are also strong significators, the reading is confirmed. If none is, the astrologer looks again before saying anything.

Timing. The significators that are also ruling planets are the ones whose dasha, bhukti and antara bring the event. For a close date, KP goes further: the event comes when the transiting Sun or Moon moves through a sign, star and sub belonging to the ruling planets.

Rectification. KP holds that the Ascendant at birth lies in the sign, star and sub of the ruling planets at the moment of rectification. Take the ruling planets now, look near your recorded Ascendant for the part of the zodiac whose three lords are among them, and adjust the birth time until the Ascendant lands there. The KP Chart section lets you move the birth time by seconds and minutes while watching the cusps, which makes this practical rather than a paper exercise.

Confirm
Ruling planets that are also significators make the promise firm.
Time
Their periods, and their signs, stars and subs in transit, fix when.
Rectify
The birth Ascendant is moved into their sign, star and sub.

Questions

KP Ruling Planets — Common Questions

The planets ruling the moment an astrologer sits down to judge a question: the lord of the weekday, the sign lord and star lord of the Moon, and the sign lord and star lord of the Ascendant. They are taken for the time and place of judgement, not the time of birth, and they change through the day as the Ascendant and Moon move.

The Ascendant moves through a whole sign in about two hours and through a nakshatra in well under one, so its sign lord and star lord change several times a day. The Moon changes nakshatra roughly once a day and sign every two and a half days. Only the day lord stays fixed from sunrise to sunrise.

The usual order is the star lord of the Ascendant, the sign lord of the Ascendant, the star lord of the Moon, the sign lord of the Moon and the day lord. A planet that appears twice — for example as the Moon's sign lord and the Ascendant's star lord — is stronger than one that appears once.

A retrograde planet among the ruling planets is normally set aside for timing, because it cannot deliver while it is moving backwards. It is taken back into account only when it turns direct or when its own star lord is direct and strong. The dashboard marks retrograde planets so you can apply this rule yourself.

KP holds that the Ascendant at birth falls in the sign, star and sub of the ruling planets at the moment the chart is being rectified. You take the ruling planets now, find the part of the zodiac near the recorded Ascendant whose sign, star and sub lords are among them, and adjust the birth time until the Ascendant lands there.

Ruling planets belong to a moment and a place, so they do not need a birth chart at all. Here they open beside your KP chart so the two can be compared, and the Right Now view shows them for the present moment, refreshed each time you press the button.

Yes. The ruling planets at birth and right now, with the refresh button, are free along with the rest of your KP chart, with nothing held back behind a payment.
