Nadi Astrology Reads a Planet by the Company It Keeps

Ask most astrologers what Saturn will do in your chart and they will talk about Saturn — its sign, its house, its dignity. Nakshatra Nadi answers differently. It holds that a planet delivers the results of the nakshatra lord it sits under before its own, and that the sub lord of its position decides how those results finally land. So Saturn in the 7th sitting in the star of a planet that rules the 10th and 11th will speak of work and gain long before it speaks of marriage. This calculator lays out all three voices for every planet in your chart — the houses the planet holds, the houses its star lord holds, the houses its sub lord holds — so you can see what each planet is really carrying into your life.

The Name

Nadi Astrology: Palm Leaves or Nakshatras?

Say "Nadi astrology" in Chennai and most people will think of Vaitheeswaran Koil — a reader takes your thumb impression, searches bundles of palm leaves, and reads out a leaf said to have been written for you by a sage long before you were born. That tradition, Nadi leaf reading, needs no birth chart at all. It depends on the leaf being found.

The Nadi astrology on this page is the other one. Nakshatra Nadi grew out of the same search for fine detail, but it works entirely from your birth chart. It took the idea that the old Nadi texts read planets through the nakshatras they occupy, joined it to the Placidus cusps and sub divisions of KP, and built a method in which every step can be checked. Nothing is hidden in a bundle; the chart is on the table, and anyone who knows the rules reaches the same houses.

That is the reason it has spread quickly among working astrologers. It keeps the precision that made Nadi famous, and drops the part that could never be verified.

The Three Levels

Planet, Star Lord and Sub Lord

Every planet in your chart sits somewhere in one of the 27 nakshatras, and every nakshatra is ruled by a planet — its star lord. Each nakshatra is then cut into nine unequal parts in the proportions of the Vimshottari dasha, and the planet ruling the part your planet falls in is its sub lord. Nakshatra Nadi reads all three, and gives each a different job.

The three levels Nakshatra Nadi reads for every planet, and what each one decides
LevelWhat It IsWhat It Tells You

The Planet

The planet itself — the house it occupies and the houses it rules The channel. Its nature colours how the results arrive, gently or with force.

Star Lord

The lord of the nakshatra the planet sits in The substance. These are the matters the planet will bring into your life.

Sub Lord

The lord of the sub division inside that nakshatra The outcome. It decides whether those matters turn out in your favour or against you.

The star lord outweighs the planet. A beginner reads Jupiter in the 5th and expects children and learning. If that Jupiter sits in the star of a planet holding the 6th and 10th, its period is far more likely to bring a job, a competition or a promotion — and the 5th house comes in only as a colour on top.

Signification

How a Planet Earns Its Houses

At each of the three levels the question is the same: which houses does this planet stand for? A planet stands for the house it occupies and for every house whose cusp falls in a sign it rules. Mars in the 11th, ruling the signs on the 1st and 8th cusps, stands for the 1st, 8th and 11th. Its star lord and its sub lord are read in exactly the same way, and the three sets of houses together make up what that planet can deliver.

The houses are measured by Placidus cusps rather than by whole signs, so a house begins at a degree and not at the start of a sign. That changes more than people expect. A planet at 3° of a sign can sit in the house before it; a large house can take in two cusps' worth of a sign; and a planet can end up ruling two houses or none. Your Nadi chart is worked on those cusps and on the KP ayanamsa, which is why its houses sometimes differ from the ones in your kundli.

Read the three levels together, not one at a time. When the planet, its star lord and its sub lord all return the same houses, that matter is strongly marked in your life. When the sub lord shows houses that oppose what the star lord shows, the matter arrives — and then struggles.

The Shadow Planets

Rahu and Ketu Work as Agents

Rahu and Ketu are points, not bodies, and they rule no sign. That leaves them nothing of their own to give beyond the house they sit in. The old rule is that a node behaves like an agent: it takes on the results of the planets it is tied to and delivers them, often more strongly than those planets would themselves.

Three ties count. The first is the lord of the sign the node occupies. The second is any planet sitting in the same sign. The third is any planet whose sight falls on that sign — the 7th aspect every planet casts, and the special aspects of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Each of those planets lends the node the house it sits in and the houses it rules. The other node is never counted, because Rahu and Ketu always face each other and would only return each other's houses.

This is why Rahu and Ketu so often show a long list of houses in a Nadi chart, and why their periods can feel crowded with events that seem unrelated. The calculator shows every one of these ties separately, under the node's own line, so you can see which planet brought which house.

  1. Its Own HouseThe house Rahu or Ketu occupies by cusp.
  2. The Sign LordThe planet ruling the sign the node sits in — its house and the houses it rules.
  3. Planets ConjunctAny planet sharing the node's sign lends it the same.
  4. Planets AspectingPlanets whose aspect falls on the node's sign — the 7th for all, the 4th and 8th of Mars, the 5th and 9th of Jupiter, the 3rd and 10th of Saturn.

Putting It to Work

Reading the Houses for a Matter of Life

No house is good or bad by itself. The 12th is loss when you ask about savings, and it is the house of foreign settlement when you ask about moving abroad. So a Nadi reading always starts from a matter — marriage, a job, a child, a home — and looks at each planet's houses against the houses that build that matter and the houses that break it.

A planet whose three levels are full of building houses is the one to watch for that matter. A planet heavy with breaking houses is the one that brings delays, denials or reversals when its period runs. Most planets carry some of both, and that mix is exactly what the reading is for.

An example. For marriage the 2nd, 7th and 11th build and the 1st, 6th and 10th resist. A Venus whose star lord holds the 7th and 11th and whose sub lord holds the 2nd is a strong promise of marriage; the same Venus under a sub lord full of the 1st and 10th brings the proposal and then the hurdles. The houses for every other matter are just as precise, and the prediction sections of your dashboard apply them for you.

Timing

When a Planet Delivers Its Houses

A Nadi chart tells you what each planet carries. The Vimshottari dasha tells you when it opens its hand. During a planet's mahadasha its houses become the ground of those years; during its antardasha, and in its smaller periods, they come forward as events. A marriage is most likely in a period whose lords all hold the 2nd, 7th and 11th, and least likely when one of them is heavy with the 1st, 6th and 10th.

This is also why two people running the same Venus mahadasha can live such different years. Venus is the same planet in both charts, but its star lord and sub lord are not, and so the houses it delivers are not either. The dasha for your chart is in the KP Dasha section of the same dashboard, worked on the same KP ayanamsa as your Nadi chart, so the two can be read side by side without a mismatch at the period boundaries.

Three Methods

Nadi, KP and Parashari Side by Side

All three read the same sky. Where they part is in what they treat as the deciding voice. Parashari astrology weighs a whole sign as a house and judges it through its lord, its occupants and the aspects on it. KP moves to Placidus cusps and hands the verdict on a question to the sub lord of the relevant cusp. Nakshatra Nadi keeps the KP cusps and the KP ayanamsa but starts from the planet, asking what it carries through its star lord and sub lord.

In practice they answer different questions well. Parashari describes a life — its shape, its temperament, its long arcs. KP settles whether a particular matter is promised. Nakshatra Nadi tells you what each planet, and therefore each period, is going to bring. A careful astrologer uses them together and is honest about which one gave which answer.

Parashari
Whole-sign houses; judged by lords, occupants and aspects.
KP
Placidus cusps; the cusp's sub lord decides a question.
Nakshatra Nadi
Placidus cusps; each planet read through its star lord and sub lord.

Precision

Your Birth Time and the Houses

Star lords and sub lords of the planets change slowly — the Moon crosses a sub in a few hours, the other planets take days or longer. The houses do not. The ascendant turns about one degree every four minutes, every cusp turns with it, and a planet near the edge of a house can move into the next one with a small error in the birth time. Since everything in a Nadi chart is read as houses, the birth time matters as much here as it does in KP.

A time from a hospital record or a family register is ideal. If yours comes from memory, watch the planets that sit close to a cusp and treat their houses as provisional. The KP Chart section of the dashboard lets you nudge the birth time by seconds or minutes and see the cusps move, which is the first step of setting a doubtful time right against events that have already happened.

Questions

Nadi Astrology — Common Questions

The word covers two different things. The better known is Nadi leaf reading, where a reader in Tamil Nadu matches your thumb impression to a palm leaf said to be written for you centuries ago. The other is Nakshatra Nadi, a chart-based method that reads every planet through the nakshatra it sits in and the sub division of that nakshatra. This calculator works the second way: from your date, time and place of birth.

No. Nadi leaf reading depends on finding a written leaf and needs no birth chart at all. Nakshatra Nadi needs nothing but an accurate birth chart, and every step of it can be checked by anyone who knows the method. Both share the name because both claim to reach the fine detail of a life rather than its broad outline.

They grew from the same root and use the same tools: Placidus cusps, the KP ayanamsa, star lords and sub lords. KP starts from the cusp of the house a question belongs to and asks what its sub lord signifies. Nakshatra Nadi starts from the planet, and reads its results through three levels — the planet, its star lord and its sub lord — before any timing is judged.

Rahu and Ketu own no sign, so they have no houses of their own to give beyond the one they sit in. They act as agents instead, giving the results of the sign lord they sit with, the planets conjunct them and the planets aspecting them. A node that is joined and aspected by several planets therefore picks up many houses, and that is often why its dasha feels crowded with events.

No house is good or bad on its own. Each matter of life has houses that build it and houses that work against it — for marriage the 2nd, 7th and 11th build and the 1st, 6th and 10th resist. The 12th is loss when the question is savings, and the house of settling abroad when the question is a move overseas. A planet is always read against the matter being asked about.

Accurate to a few minutes. The planets move slowly enough that their star lords rarely change, but the cusps move about a degree every four minutes, and the houses a planet signifies depend on those cusps. A birth time recorded in a hospital or a family register is ideal; a time remembered as "around evening" is not enough for this method.

Yes. Every planet with its star lord, sub lord and the houses each level brings alive, the breakdown behind Rahu and Ketu, and the table of all nine planets at a glance are free, with nothing held back behind a payment.

Yes, through the Vimshottari dasha. A planet gives the houses it signifies during its own period and sub-period, so once you know what each planet stands for in your chart you know what each period is likely to bring. The dasha itself is in the KP Dasha section of the same dashboard, worked on the same ayanamsa.
