Pluto: A Dwarf Planet With a Large Meaning in Astrology
In 2006 the International Astronomical Union took away Pluto's planet status and called it a dwarf planet, smaller than our own Moon. Astronomers were right by their own definition. Western astrologers kept using it all the same, because in astrology a body earns its place by what its movements line up with in human life, not by its size. Rahu and Ketu, which have no body at all, are among the most powerful points in Jyotish for the same reason.
Thirty years of charts have convinced most Western astrologers that Pluto works, and works deeply. It is the slowest and furthest of the bodies they use, and its themes are the slowest and deepest in life: power, loss, rebirth.
Lord of the Underworld: The Meaning Behind the Name
Pluto was found on 18 February 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh, a young assistant at the Lowell Observatory, who compared photographs of the same patch of sky taken nights apart until he saw one faint dot move. Its name, the Roman lord of the underworld, was suggested by an eleven-year-old schoolgirl in Oxford, Venetia Burney.
The name stuck in astrology too. The god Pluto ruled the land of the dead and also the riches buried in the earth, and the planet carries both meanings: endings and hidden wealth. The 1930s, the decade of its discovery, brought the splitting of the atom, organised crime on a new scale and the rise of totalitarian power, all of which Western astrology now reads as Plutonian.
Pluto, the Modern Ruler of Scorpio
Western astrology gave Scorpio to Pluto, keeping Mars as its traditional co-ruler. Scorpio is the fixed water sign of secrets, crisis, sexuality, research and regeneration, and Pluto shares every one of those themes. In practice, Western astrologers read a strong Scorpio emphasis together with the condition of Pluto in the chart.
A Vedic chart gives Scorpio to Mars alone, read through Mars's sign, house, nakshatra and dasha. If your Moon or ascendant is in Scorpio in your free kundli, it is Mars you look at.
Pluto has no agreed exaltation. Some modern authors suggest Leo, others Aries or Scorpio itself; none of these is classical, so I do not rely on any of them.
An Uneven Orbit: Why Pluto Stays 12 to 31 Years in a Sign
Pluto's orbit is the most stretched of all the bodies astrologers use. For about twenty years of its 248-year round it even comes closer to the Sun than Neptune. Near the Sun it races, near the far end it crawls. The result is that Pluto crossed Scorpio in about 12 years (1983 to 1995) but spends about 31 years in Taurus. That is why a "Pluto generation" can be short or very long.
What Pluto Signifies in a Birth ChartWestern astrology | |
|---|---|
| Area of Life | What Pluto Governs |
| Power | Control, authority, influence, power struggles |
| Change | Transformation, crisis, endings and rebirth |
| Hidden | Secrets, the unconscious, research, investigation, the occult |
| Wealth | Other people's money, inheritance, debt, mining, oil, large finance |
| Shadow | Obsession, compulsion, jealousy, manipulation |
| Body | Elimination, regeneration, recovery after serious illness |
Pluto rarely works on the surface. Where it touches a personal planet, the person often has a story of something taken away and later rebuilt: a family business lost and remade, a long illness that changed their whole outlook, a relationship that ended and changed them more than it lasted.
Pluto Through the Signs: A Generational Planet
Because Pluto stays so long in a sign, its sign describes what a whole generation must break and rebuild. Western astrology links Pluto in Leo (1939 to 1957) with the generation that remade power after the war, Pluto in Virgo (1957 to 1972) with work, health and technology, Pluto in Libra (1972 to 1984) with marriage, law and partnership, and Pluto in Scorpio (1983 to 1995) with sexuality, money and taboo. Pluto entered Aquarius in 2024 and will stay till about 2044, a period Western astrologers associate with technology, networks and the power of crowds.
For an individual chart, the sign tells you little you do not share with your classmates. The house, and Pluto's aspects to the Sun, Moon and ascendant, are where its personal story is written.

Pluto's house can be seen in a Western birth chart, which uses the tropical zodiac and shows the outer planets. For more on how Western astrology reads a chart, see the Western astrology section.
Pluto Transits: Slow Endings and New Foundations
Pluto moves a degree or two a year, and its retrograde brings it back over the same point, so its transits to a personal planet or angle last two to three years. Western astrologers treat them as the most demanding transits of all. Pluto crossing the Sun can change a career or identity completely; crossing the Moon, the home or the emotional life; crossing the Midheaven, one's public position.
The pattern is nearly always the same. Something is held on to past its time, pressure builds, it breaks, and what is built afterwards is stronger and more honest. The practical advice is to let go of what is already dying, rather than spend the whole transit defending it. The current positions of the visible planets are on the planet transit today page.
Pluto and the Vedic Chart: Why Jyotish Leaves It Out
Classical Jyotish was complete long before Pluto was found. Its nine grahas rule the twelve signs, its exaltations and friendships are fixed, and its Vimshottari dasha divides a 120-year life among those nine alone. Pluto has no sign, no dignity and no dasha in that system, which is also why this page has no dasha section.
The themes Western astrology gives to Pluto are already covered in a Vedic chart: Mars and the 8th house for crisis and hidden matters, Saturn for slow and heavy change, Rahu for obsession and Ketu for endings. Pluto is also read in the tropical zodiac, some 24° away from the sidereal one, as explained in sidereal vs tropical astrology. In my readings I mention Pluto only when a client brings it up from a Western chart.
Pluto in My Own Chart
Pluto is in the late degrees of tropical Libra in my own chart, the Pluto in Libra generation. Shifted to the sidereal zodiac it falls at the start of Libra, the 3rd house of my Vedic chart, in the same sign as Saturn and Jupiter.
A Western astrologer would read a Pluto in the 3rd as a mind that digs until it reaches the bottom of a question, and I will not argue with that. But in my Vedic chart the 3rd house is already well described by its own planets: an exalted-sign Saturn and Jupiter together in Libra give the same patient, thorough effort, and those are the planets whose dashas I actually time.
