Dhana Bhava: The 2nd House Shows the Money You Keep
Ask ten people what the 2nd house is and nine will say "money". They are right, but only half right. The 11th house shows money coming in; the 2nd shows how much of it stays. A man with a strong 11th and a weak 2nd earns well all his life and has little to show for it at sixty. The reverse, a modest 11th and a strong 2nd, is the shopkeeper who never earned a big salary but owns his building.
That is why the classics call it Dhana and not Labha. Dhana is stored wealth: savings, gold, the family's land, the bank balance, anything that can be handed on. When a client asks me "will I be rich?", the 2nd house answers whether he will hold on to it, and the 11th whether it will come at all.
Speech, Face and Food: The Other Half of the 2nd House
The 2nd house is also Vak Sthana, the seat of speech. The mouth that eats is the mouth that speaks, so the same house rules both. Its condition shows whether a person's words carry weight or cause trouble, whether he speaks the truth, and whether he can earn from his voice as a teacher, lawyer, singer or salesman.
Food habits are read here too. A Moon or Venus in the 2nd loves good food and a well-laid table; Saturn eats simply and on time; Rahu eats at odd hours and likes what others avoid. The face, teeth and right eye belong to this house, so does the first impression a face makes before a word is spoken.
Kutumba Bhava: Family, Values and Early Learning
The 1st house is the self; the 2nd is the first circle around the self, the family that feeds and raises a child. It shows the household you grow up in, the values it gives you and how many people sit at its table. In joint families the 2nd house tells whether the native will hold the family together or leave it.
Early schooling, up to the age when a child learns from the family rather than from the world, is judged from the 2nd house as well. A strong 2nd lord gives a child who learns easily at home and speaks well early; higher education belongs to the 4th, 5th and 9th houses.
Why the 2nd House Is a Maraka House
The 3rd house is the house of life span in some calculations, and the 8th is longevity itself. The house 12th from each, the loss of that life, is the 2nd and the 7th. These two are therefore the maraka houses, and their lords are called marakas.
This frightens people more than it should. A maraka lord does not kill in its dasha; it brings a health crisis only when the chart's longevity is already running out. For a young person in good health, the 2nd lord's period is far more often about money, family and speech than about danger.
Lord of the 2nd House in the 12 HousesWhere the second lord sits | |
|---|---|
| Placement | Main Result |
| 1st House | Wealth comes through his own effort and personality; family stands behind him; speaks with confidence |
| 2nd House | Steady savings and strong family values; money once made is kept |
| 3rd House | Earns through skill, writing, media or sales; siblings are involved in money matters |
| 4th House | Wealth held in land, house and vehicles; support from the mother's side |
| 5th House | Money through intelligence, teaching or investment; children bring wealth; a Dhana Yoga |
| 6th House | Earns through service, lending, medicine or law; debts and family disputes need care |
| 7th House | Wealth through the spouse and business partners; marriage changes the finances |
| 8th House | Inheritance, insurance and in-laws' money; sudden gains and losses; careless words cost dearly |
| 9th House | Fortunate wealth, often through the father or a guru; money for religious causes |
| 10th House | Earns through career and position; a family business or a voice-based profession |
| 11th House | The classic Dhana Yoga: strong income that turns into lasting savings |
| 12th House | Expenses run ahead of savings; money spent on family far away, travel or charity |
Read the lord's sign and its companions along with the house. A 2nd lord in the 12th that is exalted spends on good causes and can afford to; the same lord debilitated simply leaks money.
Planets in the Second House: Sun to KetuPlaced in the 2nd house | |
|---|---|
| Planet | Main Result |
| Sun | Speech with authority; money through government or the father; eye complaints; pride in the family name |
| Moon | Gentle, pleasing speech and a love of good food; wealth rises and falls; support from the mother |
| Mars | Sharp tongue and quarrels at home; money through land or technical work; counted for Manglik dosha in South India |
| Mercury | Clever, articulate speech; money through trade, accounts, writing or teaching |
| Jupiter | The best placement: truthful speech, a happy family and wealth that keeps growing |
| Venus | A sweet voice and attractive face; money through the arts, beauty or luxury goods; fond of fine food |
| Saturn | Slow, steady saving; blunt or few words; distance from the family early; wealth late in life |
| Rahu | An unusual way of speaking, often more than one language; money from unconventional or foreign sources |
| Ketu | Blunt, cutting words; little interest in family wealth; trouble with teeth or the mouth |
The sign changes the picture. Mars in Aries in the 2nd gives a fighter who builds wealth from nothing; Mars in Cancer there gives the same heat without direction, and it comes out in family arguments. Your free kundli shows which planets sit in your own 2nd house.
Dhana Yoga: When the 2nd House Makes Wealth
Wealth in a chart is never a single placement; it is a conversation between houses. The 2nd and 11th hold the money, and the 5th and 9th are the trikonas that bring luck to it. When the lords of these four houses join each other, aspect each other, exchange signs or sit in each other's houses, the chart has Dhana Yoga. The more of these links a chart carries, and the stronger the planets making them, the bigger the wealth. These and the Raja Yogas are checked in the Raj Yoga and Dhan Yoga calculator.
One caution from my own practice: the same pattern means something else in the Navamsa. In the D9 chart, links between the lords of the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th houses show many marriages or relationships, not money. The Navamsa chart calculator draws your D9 for checking.
When the 2nd House Gives Results: Dasha and Transit
Savings grow, family events happen and speech becomes a livelihood in the Mahadasha or Antardasha of the 2nd lord, of planets in the 2nd house, and of planets that aspect it. A Dhana Yoga gives its money only when the dasha of one of its planets runs; before that, it stays a promise. The Vimshottari dasha calculator shows when those periods come.
Jupiter's transit over the 2nd house, once in twelve years, is the classic year for a family addition, a marriage in the house or a jump in savings. Saturn's transit over it, for about two and a half years, tightens spending and often coincides with the first or last phase of Sade Sati when the Moon sits in the 1st or 3rd house.
The Second House in My Own Chart
My 2nd house is the busiest house in my own chart. Leo rises, so the 2nd is Virgo, and four planets sit in it: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury and Venus. Mercury is the lord of the house, and Virgo is both its own sign and its sign of exaltation, so the house has a strong lord sitting at home to manage its crowd.
Two combinations follow from it. The Sun with Mercury forms Budhaditya Yoga, sharpness in speech and calculation. Venus is debilitated in Virgo, but its dispositor Mercury is exalted in the same house, which cancels the debilitation, a neecha bhanga. In practice the 2nd house has shaped my life exactly as its name says: a family tradition of astrology five generations deep, and a working life spent reading charts aloud and writing them down.
Remedies for a Weak 2nd House
Strengthen the lord of your 2nd house first. Find it from your ascendant with the lagna calculator, then chant its beej mantra 108 times on its day. For the house as a whole, the karaka Jupiter is propitiated on Thursdays with the Guru mantra and gifts of turmeric, gram dal or yellow cloth.
The 2nd house also responds to how you use your mouth. Keep promises small and keep them, avoid harsh words at home, and eat with the family when you can. Feeding others, especially elders and teachers, is the traditional remedy for a 2nd house troubled by Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, because it turns the house of food into a house of giving.
