Neptune: The Planet of the Sea and the Dream
The Romans gave the eighth planet the name of their sea god, and the choice fits. The sea has no edges you can hold, it reflects whatever sky is above it, and it can carry you to a far shore or pull you under. Western astrology reads Neptune the same way. It is the planet of dissolving: where it sits in a chart, the line between you and others, between fact and wish, between this world and another, becomes thin.
That makes Neptune the planet of the artist, the mystic, the healer and the believer, and also of the dreamer who cannot pay the electricity bill. It never acts in a straight line. Neptune works through mood, atmosphere and longing, and its gifts and its losses usually arrive together.
How Neptune Was Found: The First Planet Discovered by Calculation
Uranus kept drifting from the path astronomers predicted for it, and in 1846 the French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier worked out that an unseen planet must be pulling on it. He sent his figures to Johann Galle at the Berlin Observatory, and on 23 September 1846 Galle found Neptune within about a degree of the predicted place, on his first night of searching. It was the first planet found by mathematics before anyone had seen it.
Astrologers like to point out that the planet of the invisible was itself found before it was seen. Its discovery also came in the years of anaesthesia, photography and the spiritualist movement, all of which Western astrology now files under Neptune.
Neptune, the Modern Ruler of Pisces
When the outer planets were found, Western astrologers gave each of them a sign. Neptune took Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac, a water sign of endings, sacrifice and surrender. Jupiter, the classical lord of Pisces, kept a share as co-ruler. The match is easy to see: Pisces and Neptune both stand for compassion, imagination, the hidden and the spiritual, and both struggle with plain boundaries.
In Jyotish, Pisces belongs to Jupiter alone, and that is how it is read in a Vedic chart. A Pisces Moon in your free kundli is judged through Jupiter, its nakshatra and its dasha, not through Neptune.
Neptune's Exaltation: An Open Question
The scheme of exaltation and debilitation was fixed in the ancient world for the seven visible planets, and nobody has managed to fit the outer planets into it to everyone's satisfaction. For Neptune, some modern astrologers propose Cancer, the sign of emotional care; others Leo, for its creative glow; others Aquarius. None of these is classical and none is agreed. I treat Neptune's dignity by sign as unsettled and read it by house and aspect instead.

The High and Low Expression of Neptune
Neptune does not change its nature from chart to chart; it changes its level. On its high side it gives the musician who makes a hall weep, the nurse who sits with a dying stranger, the person whose prayer is real. On its low side the same longing turns into fantasy, self-deception, being cheated by people you trusted, or escape through alcohol, drugs and endless screens.
What tips the balance is the rest of the chart. A strong Saturn gives Neptune a container; a Neptune in hard aspect to the Sun or Moon, with no grounding elsewhere, is the classic signature of the person who loves too easily and is used too often.
Neptune Generations: Why the House Matters More Than the Sign
Neptune stays about fourteen years in a sign, so everyone in a school class, and often everyone in a family's two generations of cousins, shares it. Its sign describes the dreams of a generation: Neptune in Sagittarius in the 1970s and 80s idealised travel and belief, Neptune in Capricorn in the 1980s and 90s dissolved old institutions, Neptune in Aquarius dreamed of networks. For one person, the house Neptune falls in, and its contacts with personal planets, matter far more.

To see Neptune's house in your own chart, cast a Western birth chart, which uses the tropical zodiac and includes all three outer planets.
Neptune Transits: Fog, Inspiration and Disappointment
Neptune moves slowly and, with its yearly retrograde, crosses the same degree three times. Its transits to the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven last two or three years and feel like walking in fog. Plans lose their sharp edges, a job or relationship you were sure of becomes unclear, and decisions taken in this period often look different afterwards.
The same transit opens doors that logic keeps shut: a spiritual practice that finally takes hold, a creative period, a new compassion. The working rule is simple. Under Neptune, create and pray freely, but sign nothing important without reading it twice. Where the visible planets stand today is on the planet transit today page.
Why Vedic Astrology Does Not Use Neptune
Jyotish was built on the seven planets visible to the eye and on Rahu and Ketu, the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. Its whole machinery, from sign lordship and exaltation to the Vimshottari dasha, is complete without Neptune, and there is no Neptune dasha, which is why this page has no dasha section. Neptune is also read in the tropical zodiac in the West; the difference is explained in sidereal vs tropical astrology.
Some Indian astrologers note a likeness between Neptune and Ketu, both standing for dissolving, detachment and the spiritual. I find the likeness useful as a picture, but not as a rule. Ketu has a fixed place in the chart opposite Rahu, a seven-year dasha and a body of classical results; Neptune has none of these, so I never use it to time an event in a Vedic reading.
Neptune in My Own Chart
In my own chart Neptune is in the last third of tropical Sagittarius, which falls at the very start of sidereal Sagittarius, the 5th house of my Vedic chart, not far from Ketu. It is a generational placement shared by everyone born in those years, so I do not read much personal meaning into the sign.
What I do notice is the company. Neptune and Ketu together in the 5th, the house of mantra, intuition and past-life merit, is the kind of picture Western and Vedic astrologers would both describe as a mind drawn to the unseen. For my own predictions, though, I rely on the Vedic chart, and there it is Ketu, not Neptune, that I read.
