Seventh House in Astrology: Marriage, Spouse and Partnership (Kalatra Bhava)

The seventh house is the other person: your husband or wife, your business partner, the people you deal with face to face. It shows what kind of spouse you attract, when marriage comes and how it holds, and whether partnerships in business work for you or against you.

Kalatra Bhava: The Mirror of the Self

The 7th house sits exactly opposite the 1st, at the western horizon where the planets set. The 1st is "me"; the 7th is "the other", the one person you face as an equal. That is why it rules the spouse first, and after the spouse every relationship of equals: a business partner, a client across the table, even an open rival in a contest.

It also explains why the 7th house so often describes what a person lacks. A fiery Aries ascendant has Libra on the 7th and is drawn to a calm, balancing partner; a reserved Capricorn ascendant has Cancer there and looks for warmth. The spouse completes the chart, and the 7th house shows the missing half.

How Marriage Is Read From the 7th House

Marriage is read through three pillars. First the 7th house itself: which planets sit in it and which aspect it. Second its lord: its sign, its strength and its company, first in the birth chart and then the same lord in the Navamsa (D9). Third the karaka, which is Venus in a man's chart and Jupiter in a woman's. The house and its lord decide the result; the karaka confirms or softens it.

The Navamsa is never optional for marriage. A strong 7th house in the birth chart with a broken 7th in the D9 gives a marriage that looks good from outside and is hard from inside. The Navamsa chart calculator draws your D9, and the Darakaraka calculator gives the Jaimini view of the spouse.

When Marriage Happens: Dasha and Transit

Marriage comes in the dasha of a planet linked with the 7th house, its lord, Venus, or the Navamsa lagna, most often when the Mahadasha and Antardasha lords are both connected with the 2nd, 7th or 11th. Transits then fix the year: Jupiter aspecting or crossing the 7th house or its lord, and Saturn touching the same points, together open the window.

This is how the when will I get married calculator reads your chart, and the marriage calculator gives the wider marriage reading.

Delay in Marriage and Manglik Dosha

Saturn on the 7th house, in it or aspecting it, is the commonest cause of delay; Rahu and Ketu bring unusual circumstances, a sudden decision or a partner from a different background. A 7th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or a heavily afflicted Venus for a man or Jupiter for a woman, also slows things down.

Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house forms Manglik dosha, and the 7th is the most direct of these. It is judged with the partner's chart, since two Manglik charts cancel each other. The Mangal dosha calculator checks it, and kundli matching compares the two charts.

Business, Partnerships and Public Dealings

The 10th house is the work you do; the 7th is the people you trade with. Every business needs customers and contracts, and both belong here. A strong 7th house linked with the 10th or 11th favours business over service, especially in partnership, sales, consultancy or anything that deals with the public. A weak 7th makes partnerships a risk, however good the 10th looks.

Whether your chart leans to a job or a business of your own is read in job or business astrology. The 7th is also a maraka house, for the same reason as the 2nd, which is explained on the second house page.

Lord of the 7th House in the 12 Houses

Where the seventh lord sits
PlacementMain Result
1st HouseDevoted to the spouse; the partner is a strong presence; marriage shapes the self
2nd HouseWealth through marriage or business; the spouse adds to the family's money
3rd HouseBusiness through skills or media; a brave, active spouse; partners met through siblings
4th HouseA happy married home; property after marriage; the spouse is homely and caring
5th HouseLove marriage likely; a romantic, intelligent spouse; children soon after marriage
6th HouseFriction, disputes or illness in marriage; the spouse may work in service or medicine
7th HouseA strong, self-assured spouse and a stable marriage; good for business partnerships
8th HouseSudden changes in married life; wealth through the in-laws; the spouse's health needs care
9th HouseA fortunate, religious spouse; luck rises after marriage; travel with the partner
10th HouseThe spouse supports or shares the career; success in business and public life
11th HouseGains through the spouse and partners; more than one important relationship possible
12th HouseSpouse from far away or abroad; expense through marriage; may settle away after marriage

The 7th lord's strength, and the same lord in the Navamsa, decide how much of this happens. An exalted 7th lord in the 6th still brings disputes, but they are settled; a debilitated one keeps them going.

The Seventh House in My Own Chart

With Leo rising, my 7th house is Aquarius. No planet sits in it, but three aspect it: Jupiter from the 3rd, Mars from the 4th and Rahu from the 11th. The lord, Saturn, is exalted in the 3rd, and the karaka Venus, in the 2nd, is debilitated but has its debilitation cancelled by an exalted Mercury beside it.

Here the three pillars pull in different directions, which is the usual case and the reason one rule never decides a marriage. Mars sitting in the 4th makes the chart Manglik, and its aspect lands on the 7th. Jupiter's aspect, which is always benefic, protects the house. And an exalted 7th lord in a house of effort gives a partnership that is built, steadily, rather than one that simply happens.

Remedies for Delay and Problems in Marriage

For a man, strengthen Venus: the Shukra mantra on Fridays, respect for women in the family, and gifts of white sweets or clothes. For a woman, strengthen Jupiter with the Guru mantra on Thursdays and the Thursday fast. The Katyayani mantra is the classical prayer of young women waiting for a good marriage, and couples recite the Gauri Shankar prayer for harmony.

Where Saturn delays marriage, patience is part of the remedy; Saturn gives what it promises, but on its own schedule. Where Mars troubles the 7th, match the chart before marriage rather than look for a remedy after it, and recite the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays.

Seventh House in Astrology: Common Questions

The 7th house represents marriage, the spouse, business partnerships and dealings with the public. In Vedic astrology it is called Kalatra Bhava, the house of the spouse, and it stands opposite the 1st house of the self.

Jupiter and Mercury are the best planets in the 7th house, giving a wise or intelligent spouse and a stable marriage. Venus is pleasant there too, though as the karaka of marriage in its own house it can bring too much attraction for one relationship to hold.

Saturn in the 7th house delays marriage, often past the usual age, and gives a mature, serious or older spouse. Once made, such marriages tend to last, and Saturn gains directional strength in the 7th.

Yes, Mars in the 7th house is one of the positions that forms Manglik dosha. It gives a passionate but argumentative married life, and the dosha is judged along with the partner's chart before marriage.

An empty 7th house does not mean no marriage. Marriage is then judged from the 7th lord, the karaka (Venus for a man, Jupiter for a woman), any aspects on the house, and the Navamsa (D9) chart.

With the 7th house lord in the 12th, the spouse may come from far away or from a different background, and the native may settle abroad after marriage. It can also bring expense through marriage or distance between partners.

The sign on your 7th house, the planets in it, its lord and the Navamsa (D9) chart describe the spouse's nature and looks. The Darakaraka in Jaimini astrology adds a second picture of the partner.

The 7th house rules the lower back, the kidneys and the reproductive organs. Sexual health and urinary complaints are judged from it.
