Sukha Bhava: Peace of Mind Is the Real Wealth of the 4th House
The classical name of the 4th house is Sukha, happiness, and it is worth taking the word seriously. A man may own three flats and still lie awake at night; another rents one room and sleeps well. The 4th house shows both the flats and the sleep, and of the two, the sleep is the truer reading.
The 4th is the lowest point of the chart, the part of the sky under the earth at birth. It is the private self, the place you return to when the day's work in the 10th house is done. When the 4th house is strong, a person has somewhere inside to rest. When it is troubled, success outside never quite settles the mind.
Matru Bhava: The Mother
The mother is read from the 4th house, its lord and the Moon, her karaka. A well-placed Moon with a strong 4th lord shows a mother who is healthy, close and a source of comfort. Saturn or Rahu on the 4th house often shows a mother who worked hard, was unwell, or lived at a distance for some part of the native's childhood.
The same three factors, read for a woman's own chart, also show her as a mother: how she runs a home and how much care she gives. The house is about nourishment in both directions.
Home, Land and Vehicles
Property, houses and land belong to the 4th house, with Mars as the karaka of land and Venus of vehicles and comforts. Whether you will own a house, inherit one, or keep renting is judged from the 4th lord's link with the houses of money, the 2nd and 11th, and of fortune, the 9th. Malefics in the 4th do not deny property, but they take away the ease of it: disputes over land, repairs that never end, a house that feels restless.
Vehicles follow Venus and the 4th lord together. A strong Venus with a good 4th house gives comfortable transport from an early age; an afflicted pair makes the native careful with vehicles all his life.
The 4th House and Education
Schooling and degrees are read from the 4th house, intelligence and understanding from the 5th, and higher learning and research from the 9th. The 4th tells you whether a person completes his education and how settled the years of study are, with Mercury as its karaka. A child with a disturbed 4th house often changes schools or studies through difficulties at home, even when the 5th shows a sharp mind.
Homeland and Moving Away: The 4th and the 12th
The 4th is also the motherland, the place a person belongs to. That is why every question of leaving it starts here. An afflicted 4th house on its own gives moves within the country: new cities, new houses, a sense of never quite settling. Settling abroad needs more, a link between the 4th and the 12th, strengthened when the 9th house and Rahu join in. This is the main test used in foreign settlement astrology.
Lord of the 4th House in the 12 HousesWhere the fourth lord sits | |
|---|---|
| Placement | Main Result |
| 1st House | Comfortable, home-loving and well educated; property comes easily; close to the mother |
| 2nd House | Wealth through property or the mother's side; a well-provided family home |
| 3rd House | Frequent short moves; effort goes into the home; property through siblings |
| 4th House | Strong home and property; peace of mind; the mother lives long and stays close |
| 5th House | Good education and a happy home with children; gains from land |
| 6th House | Disputes over property or with relatives; the mother's health needs care |
| 7th House | Property after marriage or through the spouse; may settle away from the birthplace |
| 8th House | Sudden changes of residence; inheritance of property; little peace at home |
| 9th House | Fortunate in land and vehicles; a religious home; support from both parents |
| 10th House | Career in property, vehicles, education or agriculture; the home serves the work |
| 11th House | Gains from land and rent; many friends at home; wishes fulfilled |
| 12th House | Lives far from the birthplace, often abroad; spends on the home; a quiet, private life |
The lord's strength decides how these play out. A 4th lord in the 6th that is exalted wins its property disputes; a debilitated one drags them on for years.

When to Buy Property: Dasha and Transit of the 4th House
Property is most often bought in the Mahadasha or Antardasha of the 4th lord, of a planet sitting in the 4th, or of the karaka Mars or Venus when they are linked to the house. The Vimshottari dasha calculator shows when these periods fall.
Transits time it within the dasha. Jupiter passing over the 4th house or aspecting it from the 8th, 10th or 12th is the classic window for buying a home. Saturn passing over the 4th brings repairs, a move, or worry about the mother; when Saturn is in the 4th from the natal Moon it is called Ardhashtama Shani, a two-and-a-half-year stretch of domestic pressure that ends on its own.
The Fourth House in My Own Chart
With Leo rising, my 4th house is Scorpio, and Mars, its lord, sits there in its own sign. For a Leo ascendant Mars is the yogakaraka, the lord of both the 4th and the 9th, so the best planet of the chart is sitting at home in a kendra. A Mars in its own sign in a kendra also forms Ruchaka yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas.
Mars is still Mars, though, and in the house of the home it does not sit still. I have changed houses and cities many times. In my D1 chart the 4th lord makes no link with the 12th, and every one of those moves has been within India, which is just what the rule above says: a busy 4th house moves you around, but leaving the country needs the 12th house to join in.
Remedies for a Weak 4th House
The Moon is the first karaka of the 4th house, so its remedies come first: offer water to Shiva on Mondays, keep a silver glass for drinking water, and above all serve and respect your mother. No ritual strengthens the 4th house as fast as that one. Strengthen the 4th lord as well, with its mantra on its day.
For a home that never feels peaceful, look at the house itself: keep the north-east corner clean and light, avoid clutter in the centre, and do not leave repairs undone. Where Mars disturbs the 4th, recite the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays and settle land disputes by agreement rather than in court whenever you can.
