Tanu Bhava: What the First House Rules in Your Life
Parashara calls the first house Tanu, the body, and lists under it complexion, form, strength, happiness and sorrow, and the native's own nature. Put simply, it is the house of you. Wealth belongs to the 2nd, marriage to the 7th, career to the 10th, but every one of those results has to be lived by someone, and the 1st house is that someone. A chart with a rich 10th and a broken 1st gives a big post to a man too unwell or too unsure to enjoy it.
In practice I read three things from it before anything else. First, vitality: how quickly the person falls ill and how quickly he gets up again. Second, temperament: whether he meets life head-on or waits for it to come to him. Third, how others see him. The first house is the face you carry into every room, and it decides how much of the rest of the chart people will give you a chance to show.
The rising sign colours all of this, and it is explained separately in the ascendant in astrology. This page is about the house itself: what sits in it, what aspects it, and where its lord has gone.
Why the 1st House Is Both a Kendra and a Trikona
The kendras, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th, are the pillars of the chart, the houses of action and effort. The trikonas, the 1st, 5th and 9th, are the houses of grace, of merit carried in from before birth. Only the first house belongs to both groups. Whatever you work for and whatever you are given both pass through it.
This double role has a practical result. The lord of the 1st house is always a friend of the native, whatever its natural character. Saturn is a hard planet, but for a Capricorn or Aquarius ascendant it is the one planet that will never work against you. Mars may be fiery, but for Aries and Scorpio ascendants it is the guardian of the body. Which other planets are friends or enemies for your ascendant is worked out in functional benefic and malefic planets.
Lord of the 1st House in the 12 HousesWhere the ascendant lord sits | |
|---|---|
| Placement | Main Result |
| 1st House | Self-made and independent; good health, strong will, takes his own decisions |
| 2nd House | Life built around family and its values; gains by his own effort; speech carries weight |
| 3rd House | Courageous, restless, skilled with hands or words; rises through initiative, not luck |
| 4th House | Home-loving; property, vehicles and the mother's support; values peace over fame |
| 5th House | Intelligent, creative and devoted to children; a deep store of past merit |
| 6th House | Fights his way through rivals and illness; does well in service, law, medicine or competition |
| 7th House | Life turns on the partner and the public; marriage reshapes the self; suited to business |
| 8th House | Secretive, drawn to research and the occult; sharp ups and downs; health needs watching |
| 9th House | Fortunate and principled; support from father and guru; higher learning and long journeys |
| 10th House | Career-driven; makes his own name; status and authority come through work |
| 11th House | Steady gains and a wide circle; wishes are fulfilled; elder siblings and friends help |
| 12th House | Lives or works away from the birthplace; spends freely; spiritual and private by nature |
The table gives the direction, not the final word. A lord in the 12th that is exalted or aspected by Jupiter gives a life abroad that goes well; the same lord debilitated gives expenses and drift. Read the sign and the company the lord keeps along with the house.
Planets in the First House: Sun to KetuPlaced in the 1st house | |
|---|---|
| Planet | Main Result |
| Sun | Commanding presence and self-respect; a hot constitution and little patience with being told what to do |
| Moon | Soft, pleasant face and a popular manner; moods change quickly; strongest when the Moon is waxing |
| Mars | Energetic, sporty, quick to anger; marks or scars on the head or face; counted for Manglik dosha |
| Mercury | Youthful looks, quick wit and a good speaker; a business mind; directional strength |
| Jupiter | The best placement: wisdom, respect and protection for the whole chart; weight gain in later years |
| Venus | Attractive and charming; fond of comfort, clothes and the arts; easy in company |
| Saturn | Serious and lean; a slow start in life that improves with age; in Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius it forms Sasa yoga |
| Rahu | Ambitious and unconventional; an image larger than life; restless about who he really is |
| Ketu | Detached, intuitive and careless about appearance; health complaints that are hard to diagnose |
A planet in the 1st house always shows in the person, in looks, manner or health, because it sits on the body itself. Its sign decides whether it shows well. Mars in Aries or Capricorn in the 1st forms Ruchaka yoga and gives a fighter; Mars in Cancer there gives the same fire with no outlet, and it turns inward as irritability. Your free kundli shows which planets, if any, sit in your own 1st house.
Empty 1st House: What It Really Means
Many people see a blank first house in their chart and worry that they have no personality or no luck. Neither is true. Close to half of all charts have an empty 1st house, simply because nine planets have to share twelve houses.
When nothing sits in the 1st, the house is read through three things: the sign rising there, its lord, and any planet that aspects it. Of these the lord matters most. An empty 1st with a strong lord in a kendra or trikona gives a calm, self-reliant person whose life is not pulled in different directions by a planet sitting on the self. An aspect from Jupiter to an empty 1st house is one of the best protections a chart can have.
Strong and Weak 1st House: Health, Confidence and Recognition
The 1st house is strong when its lord is in its own or exalted sign, or sits in a kendra or trikona; when Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or a strong Moon sits in it or aspects it; and when the Sun, its karaka, is well placed. Such a person recovers fast, carries himself with ease and is taken seriously without having to push.
It weakens when its lord falls into the 6th, 8th or 12th house, is debilitated or combust, or when Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu sit in the 1st or aspect it without owning it. Malefics on both sides, in the 12th and the 2nd, hem the house in and form paap kartari yoga, a squeeze on the self from both directions. The signs show early in life: frequent illness in childhood, low confidence, or a sense of always having to prove oneself. A weak 1st house does not cancel a good chart, but it slows down how quickly the native can use it.
When the 1st House Gives Results: Dasha and Transit
The first house speaks loudest in the Mahadasha or Antardasha of its own lord, of a planet sitting in it, or of a planet aspecting it. These are the years when health, appearance and self-image change, when people move cities, change their look, or start something entirely their own. The Vimshottari dasha calculator shows when these periods fall in your life.
Transits add the timing within a dasha. Jupiter crossing your 1st house, about once in twelve years, brings optimism, weight gain and a fresh start. Saturn crossing it, for about two and a half years, asks for discipline: a heavier workload, a leaner body and a hard look at who you have become. Where both planets stand today is on the planet transit today page.
The First House in My Own Chart
Leo rises in my own chart, and my first house is empty. The only planet that touches it is Ketu, which sits in the 5th house, in Sagittarius, and casts its 9th aspect on the ascendant. Everything else about the house rests on its lord, the Sun, which has moved into the 2nd house, in Virgo.
An empty 1st house with a single Ketu aspect is a quiet one. Ketu does not crowd the self with ambition the way Rahu would; it pulls the attention inward, away from display and towards intuition, and from the 5th house, the house of mantra and past merit, it turns that intuition towards the scriptures. Leo is a fixed sign, which adds the habit of staying with one thing for decades. With the lord in the house of family and speech, the self is expressed through the family's tradition and the spoken word rather than through personal show. In my case that tradition is astrology, and I have practised it since 2001.
Remedies for a Weak 1st House
Every remedy for the 1st house is, at heart, a remedy for its lord. Find your ascendant with the lagna calculator, then chant the beej mantra of its lord on that planet's day, 108 times. Because the ascendant lord is always a friend, its gemstone is the one stone most astrologers consider safe for the native, provided the lord is not badly placed; have the chart checked before wearing it.
For the body itself, the classical practice is Surya Namaskar at sunrise, since the Sun is the karaka of the 1st house, along with offering water to the rising Sun. If Saturn, Rahu or Ketu sits in your 1st house, fix your daily routine, sleep and food first; a malefic on the self responds to discipline more than to ritual. And if Jupiter aspects the house, honour your teachers and elders. That aspect is your protection, and it grows when you respect what it stands for.
