The Lal Kitab's Own Clock for a Life

Every system of astrology needs a clock — a way of saying not only what a chart promises but when. Classical Jyotish uses the 120-year Vimshottari dasha, different for every person. The Lal Kitab chose something far simpler: one cycle of 35 years, the same order for everyone, repeating through life. What makes it yours is not the order but the houses your planets sit in. When Jupiter's years come round, it is your Jupiter, in its house, that speaks.

That simplicity is the Lal Kitab dasha's strength. You can see at a glance which planet is running your years now, which comes next, and which periods in your life will lean on which house. And because the cycle repeats, the same planet returns at fixed ages, so a planet that troubled you once can be prepared for the next time.

What you get from the calculator above: the Lal Kitab period and sub-period you are in now with their dates, the full 35-year cycle with the birth-hora cycle beside it, the house active at your age in the 36-year house cycle, and this year month by month.

The Lal Kitab dasha: nine periods in 35 years, starting with Saturn and repeating at 35 and 70.

The 35-Year Lal Kitab Cycle, Period by Period

PeriodYears · Ages in Each CycleWhat It Brings
Saturn6 · 0–6, 35–41, 70–76Hard work, discipline, property
Rahu6 · 6–12, 41–47, 76–82Sudden turns, ambition, links abroad
Ketu3 · 12–15, 47–50, 82–85Travel, children, letting go
Jupiter6 · 15–21, 50–56, 85–91Learning, guidance, growth
Sun2 · 21–23, 56–58Recognition, authority, the father
Moon1 · 23–24, 58–59Home, the mother, peace of mind
Venus3 · 24–27, 59–62Marriage, comfort, money
Mars6 · 27–33, 62–68Courage, effort, property, brothers
Mercury2 · 33–35, 68–70Business, speech, quick thinking

The ages are counted from birth in completed years, and the whole order begins again at 35 and at 70. Within each period the calculator also shows the sub-periods, so a long six-year period is broken into its smaller turns.

What Makes the Lal Kitab Dasha Yours

If the order is the same for everyone, why do two people in their Mars years have such different times? Because each period is read through that planet's place in your own Lal Kitab teva. A Mars in its house of exaltation makes its six years a time of real achievement; a debilitated Mars makes the same six years a struggle that calls for remedies.

So the dasha tells you when a planet's turn comes; the teva tells you what kind of turn it will be. Reading the two together, you can see a hard period coming and begin its planet's Lal Kitab remedies before it arrives.

The Birth-Hora Cycle

The Lal Kitab also allows the same 35-year cycle to start from a different planet: the lord of the hora, the planetary hour, in which you were born. The order stays the same, only the starting point moves. Some Lal Kitab astrologers read this cycle beside the main one, especially when the main one does not seem to fit a life.

The calculator shows the Saturn-start cycle first and the birth-hora cycle in a second tab. When you were born in a Saturn hour the two are the same, and only one timeline is shown.

The 36-Year House Cycle

Beside the planetary periods runs a second clock: the twelve houses taken three years at a time, covering 36 years. The house active at your age shows the area of life that is turning over in these years — career, home, marriage, money — and remedies for that house's planet work best while it is active.

For the year in finer detail, from birthday to birthday and month by month, see the Lal Kitab varshphal.

Lal Kitab Dasha and Vimshottari Dasha

The Vimshottari dasha of classical Jyotish runs 120 years, begins from the nakshatra of your Moon, and is different for nearly everyone. It is the finer instrument for timing events. The Lal Kitab dasha is broader and simpler: the same 35-year order for all, made personal by the teva.

I use them for different things. The Vimshottari tells me when an event is due; the Lal Kitab dasha tells me which planet is setting the tone of these years, and so which remedy to give.

A Worked Example: My Own Lal Kitab Teva

Here is how the 35-year cycle reads against my own Lal Kitab teva. Every placement is the real one.

  1. The Mars YearsMars is debilitated in the fourth house of my teva. Its six-year periods — ages 27 to 33 and 62 to 68 — are therefore the years that ask most for its remedy, and the years I would prepare for in advance.
  2. The Moon YearThe Moon is exalted in my second house. Its single year in each cycle — 23 to 24 and 58 to 59 — is one of the easier years of the cycle in this chart.
  3. The Rahu YearsRahu sits in my eleventh house, the house of gains and friends, so its six-year periods lean on gains and networks rather than on the home.
  4. The Same Planets, Every CycleBecause the cycle repeats, each of these turns comes round again 35 years later. A lesson learned in the first Mars period is the best preparation for the second.

That is the practical value of the Lal Kitab dasha: the hard periods can be seen decades ahead, and the remedy can be ready before they begin.

Questions

Lal Kitab Dasha: Questions People Ask

The Lal Kitab dasha is the Lal Kitab's own cycle of planetary periods. It runs for 35 years in a fixed order — Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, Jupiter, the Sun, the Moon, Venus, Mars and Mercury — and then repeats, so a full life passes through it about three times.

Saturn, Rahu, Jupiter and Mars run for six years each, Ketu and Venus for three, the Sun and Mercury for two, and the Moon for one — 35 years in all.

The Vimshottari dasha runs for 120 years and starts from the nakshatra of your Moon, so it is different for everyone. The Lal Kitab dasha runs for 35 years in the same order for everyone; what makes it personal is where each planet sits in your Lal Kitab teva.

It depends on your age. The calculator shows your running period and sub-period, when it began and when it ends, and the periods before and after it.

A second way of running the same 35-year cycle, starting from the planet that ruled the hour of your birth instead of from Saturn. The calculator shows it beside the main Saturn-start cycle, and when the birth hour belongs to Saturn the two are the same.

Alongside the planetary periods, the Lal Kitab moves through the twelve houses, three years at a time, over 36 years. The house active at your age shows the part of life that is turning over in these years.

The order of the main cycle is the same for everyone, but reading it needs your Lal Kitab teva, which needs the birth time. The birth-hora cycle needs the time as well.

Yes. The running period and sub-period, the full cycle, the birth-hora cycle, the house cycle and this year month by month are all free.
