The Day Your Relationship Was Born

Every relationship has a wedding date or the day two people first met. The Davison chart has a different birthday for it — one written into the two births themselves. Take the moment halfway between when the two of you were born, and the place halfway between where you were born, and cast a chart for it. That chart belongs to neither of you. It belongs to the two of you together.

Born in Delhi in May 1990 and in Mumbai in August 1992? Your relationship's chart is cast for early July 1991, at a point in Madhya Pradesh halfway between the two cities. The sky at that moment is a real sky, with real retrograde planets and real houses, and it is read exactly as an astrologer reads any birth chart.

What you get from the calculator above: the date and place your relationship was born; what it is built around, from the Sun and its house; how it feels inside, how others see you and how you love, from the Moon, the rising sign and Venus; the full wheel with every planet and house cusp; the balance of elements and modes; and every major and minor aspect, the closest read out in plain words.

How a Davison Chart Is Cast

The method was set out by the British astrologer Ronald Davison in 1977, and it has three steps. First, both birth moments are converted to Universal Time, so that a birth in India and a birth in London are measured on the same clock. The moment exactly halfway between them becomes the Davison moment.

Second, the two birthplaces are averaged: the latitude halfway between them and the longitude halfway between them. Third, an ordinary birth chart is cast for that moment at that place — the same calculation as any natal chart, on the Swiss Ephemeris, in the tropical zodiac, with Placidus houses.

Your result shows both birth dates, the Davison moment between them and the midpoint place, so you can see exactly which sky the chart is drawn from.

Davison Chart and Composite Chart: What Is the Difference

Both are charts of the relationship rather than of either person, and they are often confused. The composite chart takes each planet's midpoint separately: the composite Sun is halfway between the two Suns, the composite Moon halfway between the two Moons. Its planets never stood together in a real sky.

PointComposite ChartDavison Chart
Built FromThe midpoint of each planetThe midpoint in time and place
A Real SkyNoYes, a real date and place
Retrograde PlanetsNot meaningfulReal, as in any birth chart
Transits and ProgressionsPossible, but debatedWork as for any birth chart

In practice the two charts usually agree on the big themes, because the planets that move slowly land in nearly the same places either way. Where they differ, the Moon is often the reason: it moves so fast that its Davison position can be far from its composite one. Read both, and trust what they say together.

The Four Points That Matter Most in a Davison Chart

Read the Davison chart the way you would read a birth chart, starting with these four.

Sun

What the Relationship Is About

Its sign gives the bond its character; its house shows where the two of you put your shared energy — home, career, friends, travel or the partnership itself.

Moon

How It Feels Inside

Whether you feel safe in the same ways, how moods pass between you, and what the relationship needs to feel cared for.

Rising Sign

The Couple Others See

The impression you make together, from a family gathering to a room full of strangers.

Venus

How Love Works Between You

How affection is shown and received, and what keeps romance alive over the years.

Your result reads each of these in plain words, with the sign, the exact degree and the house.

Major and Minor Aspects in the Davison Chart

The aspects inside the Davison chart are the working parts of the relationship. The calculator groups them the way an astrologer would look at them.

  1. Easy Links: Trines and SextilesParts of the bond that support each other without effort.
  2. Testing Links: Squares and OppositionsWhere the relationship rubs, and where it grows the most.
  3. Merged Energies: ConjunctionsTwo parts of the relationship working as one. Venus with Mars, for example, keeps attraction strong.
  4. Minor AspectsQuincunx, semi-square, sesquiquadrate, quintile and others, within tight orbs. They add colour rather than shape: small irritations, odd adjustments or a shared creative gift.

Every aspect is shown with its orb to the second, and the closest major aspects are read out in full.

A Davison chart with several testing links is not a warning. It shows the places where the two of you will need patience — the most useful thing a couple can know.

Following the Relationship Through Time

This is what Davison was after. Because his chart has a real date, astrologers can follow it with transits and progressions exactly as they follow a person's chart. When Saturn crosses the Davison Sun, the relationship is tested and made more serious; when Jupiter crosses its Venus, it tends to open up and grow.

The calculator gives you the Davison chart itself. For a reading of what the coming years hold for the relationship, an astrologer can follow the chart through time with you.

Birth Time and Accuracy

An error in one birth time moves the Davison moment by half as much, so an hour's doubt in one time shifts the chart by half an hour. The planets hardly move in that time — except the Moon, which moves about a quarter of a degree.

The rising sign, the Midheaven and the houses turn about a degree every four minutes, so they need both birth times to be accurate. If one time is a family recollection, read the houses as provisional and lean on the signs and aspects.

Davison Chart: Questions People Ask

A Davison chart is a real birth chart cast for the moment exactly halfway in time between two births, at the place exactly halfway between the two birthplaces. Astrologers read it as the birth chart of the relationship itself — as if the bond were a person born on that day.

The British astrologer Ronald Davison described the method in his 1977 book Synastry. He wanted a relationship chart that, unlike the composite, corresponds to a real moment in time, so that it could be progressed and followed by transits like any birth chart.

A composite chart takes the midpoint of each planet separately, so its planets never stood together in the sky. A Davison chart takes the midpoint of the two births in time and space and casts an ordinary chart for that moment. The two usually agree on the main themes, but the Davison has real retrograde motion, real house positions and a real date.

Neither replaces the other. Many astrologers find the composite describes how the relationship works day to day, while the Davison describes its character and timing, because a real date can be followed by transits. Where both charts say the same thing, that theme is strong.

It is the relationship's symbolic birthday. If you were born two years apart, the Davison date falls about a year after the older person's birth. It is not a date anything happened; it is the moment the chart is cast for.

Because it is the halfway point between the two birthplaces on the globe. Two people born in Delhi and Mumbai get a Davison place in Madhya Pradesh; two people born on different continents may get a place in the middle of an ocean. The chart is still valid; the place is only a point to calculate it from.

The planets are reliable even if one time is out by an hour, because each hour of difference moves the Davison moment by only half an hour. The rising sign, the Midheaven and the houses need both times to be accurate.

Besides the main conjunctions, trines, sextiles, squares and oppositions, the Davison chart lists finer angles such as the quincunx, semi-square, sesquiquadrate and quintile. They work within tight orbs and add colour to the relationship rather than shape it.
