Saturn Retrograde Explained: Dates, Times and Effects
Saturn retrograde comes every year and lasts longer than any personal planet's: about four and a half months. Saturn, the planet of karma, time, duty and endurance, seems to turn back in the sky, and what it rules slows further, returns and asks to be finished properly. Because Saturn's sign decides Sade Sati and Dhaiya, Saturn retrograde is watched closely by every Moon sign. The tables above give every Saturn retrograde of the year you choose and the years that follow: the date and time Saturn turns retrograde, the date and time it turns direct, the sign and degree at both stations, and how long each Saturn retrograde lasts.
What Is Saturn Retrograde?
Saturn never really reverses. Once a year the Earth, on its faster inner orbit, overtakes Saturn, and for about four and a half months Saturn seems from here to slow down, stand still, move backwards about seven degrees and then turn forward again. In the middle of the retrograde Saturn stands opposite the Sun, at its closest and brightest. In Vedic astrology Saturn retrograde is called Shani Vakri, and the texts give it full cheshta bala, the strength of motion: not a weaker Saturn, but one that goes back over its own ground and makes sure nothing has been left undone.
Saturn Retrograde Effects in Astrology
Saturn rules work and career, discipline, servants and labour, old age, chronic illness, delay and the results of past actions. During Saturn retrograde these are reviewed: promotions are held back, old responsibilities return, long-standing problems resurface to be solved for good, and people from the past reappear with unfinished business. Read from your Moon sign, Saturn retrograde is felt most by the signs in Sade Sati and Dhaiya and by those whose Moon or Lagna Saturn passes over. Born with Saturn retrograde, a person often carries responsibility early, distrusts easy success, and builds slowly what lasts.

Saturn Retrograde and Sade Sati
Sade Sati is the seven and a half years Saturn takes to pass the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your Moon, and Dhaiya the two and a half years it spends in the 4th or 8th. A Saturn retrograde goes back over degrees it has just crossed, so the signs in Sade Sati or Dhaiya meet its themes a second time, usually as unfinished matters coming back to be settled. When a retrograde carries Saturn back into the sign it has just left, it can give one Moon sign a pause and bring Sade Sati back for another for a few months. Saturn's sign changes are on the Saturn transit dates page, with the Moon signs in Sade Sati and Dhaiya now, and your own phases on the Sade Sati calculator.
Saturn Retrograde and Career
Saturn is the karaka of work, and its retrograde is a time to consolidate rather than to leap. Promotions, approvals and new appointments often wait until Saturn turns direct; work begun earlier needs to be finished and made sound. It is a poor time to resign on impulse or to start a large long-term venture, and a good time to clear a backlog, train, reorganise and repair relations with colleagues and those who work under you.
Saturn Retrograde and Karma
Saturn keeps the account of past actions, and its retrograde is when the account is checked. Old debts, promises not kept and duties neglected come back; so do the rewards of honest effort that seemed to have been forgotten. Pay what you owe, keep your word, and treat servants, labourers and the elderly with care; in Vedic thought, that is how Saturn is pleased.
How to Prepare for Saturn Retrograde
Look up the next Saturn retrograde in the table and plan around it. Start long-term ventures, change jobs and take on new debts before Saturn turns retrograde or after it turns direct. During Saturn retrograde, finish old work, keep a steady routine and look after your health, especially bones, joints and teeth. In Vedic tradition, worship of Lord Shani and Lord Hanuman on Saturdays, an offering of mustard oil and black sesame, and recitation of the Shani mantra are the usual remedies.
Saturn Retrograde in My Own Chart
Saturn sits in Libra, its sign of exaltation, in my own chart, close to the Sun. With my Moon in Virgo, my Sade Sati runs while Saturn passes Leo, Virgo and Libra, so a Saturn retrograde in those signs is the one I watch most: those months I keep for finishing what Saturn has already asked of me, and leave new commitments until it turns direct.
