Why a New Home Is Worshipped Before You Live in It
A house is bricks and cement until a family settles in it, and our tradition marks that change with a puja. The ground the house stands on, the directions it faces and the deities who guard each corner are honoured, and whatever the building carried from its construction — the digging, the cutting, the coming and going of many people — is cleared away. I tell families that the Grah Pravesh is less about the house than about the first day of a new chapter, and that chapter deserves a proper beginning.
Three Kinds of Grah Pravesh
The shastras name three. Apurva Grah Pravesh is the first entry into a newly built or newly bought home. Sapurva Grah Pravesh is the return to a home after a long time away, such as after years abroad or a long stay elsewhere. Dwandwah Grah Pravesh is done after a house has been rebuilt or repaired following damage. The same puja serves all three; only the sankalp changes. A rented home is worth a puja too — you are still beginning a life there.
Choosing the Grah Pravesh Muhurat
The date matters more for Grah Pravesh than for most pujas. The months of Magh, Phalgun, Vaishakh and Jyeshtha are traditionally preferred, and the bright half of the month is chosen over the dark half. Fixed and gentle nakshatras such as Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati are favoured. Chaturmas and Kharmas are avoided, and so are the days when Jupiter or Venus is combust.
If you have not fixed a date yet, chat with an astrologer and choose one that suits both the calendar and your own chart. Once you book, our team fixes the exact time on that date.
Online or at the House Itself
Many families buy a home in one city while they still live in another, or move in on a date when no pandit near them is free. An online Grah Pravesh is performed by our team in your name, and you watch it live from your account — if you are already in the new house, keep a diya burning at the entrance while it runs. In Delhi, the puja can also be done at your home: the pandit comes to the house, you arrange the samagri, and we send you the list after booking.
Grah Pravesh Puja: Common Questions
Can Grah Pravesh Puja be done online?
Yes. Our team performs the Grah Pravesh in your name and gotra, and you watch it live from your Astromitra account — useful when you move in on a date no local pandit is free, or live in another city.
Is Grah Pravesh Puja needed for a rented house?
It is not compulsory, but it is a good tradition to follow. Moving into any home, rented or owned, is the start of a new chapter, and a simple Grah Pravesh Puja is done for it.
Who arranges the puja samagri?
For an online puja, our team arranges all the samagri. For a puja at your home in Delhi, you arrange the samagri, and we send you the list once the booking is made.
Can I watch the Grah Pravesh Puja live?
Yes. An online puja is shown live, and you join it from your Astromitra account at the time we confirm for you.
Is the puja performed in my name and gotra?
Yes. You give the name and gotra when you book, and the pandit takes the sankalp in that name before the puja begins. If you do not know your gotra, the sankalp is taken in Kashyap gotra, as tradition allows.
