Porutham Matching Report

Instant Porutham Matching Report in 5 Minutes

Guna milan is where a matching begins, not where it ends. The report takes both charts in full — the seventh house in each, Venus, both Navamsas, the doshas with every cancellation applied — and sets out what the two of you are actually likely to build together. It reaches you within minutes.

  • All ten poruthams scored and read out, one by one
  • Rajju and Vedha, with the group named and every exception checked
  • Mangal Dosha in both charts, and how the two answer each other
  • The 7th house, its lord and Venus in each chart
  • Both Navamsas — where a marriage is confirmed or thinned out
  • The dashas each of you is running, and the years they agree

The South Counts Ten Agreements, Not Eight

Porutham is the matching used across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra and Karnataka. It works from the same two Moons that guna milan uses — the nakshatra and the rasi of each person — but it asks ten questions of them instead of eight, and it weighs two of those ten far above the rest.

Those two are Rajju and Vedha, and they are the reason a family in the south can refuse a match that scores respectably in the north. A pairing may collect twenty-six points and still be set aside because the Rajju falls the same on both sides. Understanding that one rule explains most of what looks arbitrary about porutham to someone raised on the thirty-six-point system.

The Ten Poruthams, One by One

Each porutham asks a different question of the two stars. Read them for what they test rather than for the number beside them.

PoruthamWorked FromWhat It Tests
DinaThe two nakshatrasHealth, fortune and how events land on the couple — the north calls this Tara
GanaStar temperamentDeva, manushya or rakshasa: how each behaves under pressure
MahendraStar countChildren and the continuation of the line
Stree DeerghaStar distanceThe wife's wellbeing and the length of the marriage
YoniAnimal symbolPhysical compatibility and instinct
RasiThe two Moon signsProsperity and the household — the north's Bhakoot
RasyadhipathiThe sign lordsMental affinity, through the friendship of the two lords
VasyaSign classAttraction and who holds the pull
RajjuStar groupThe husband's longevity and the marriage's survival — the heaviest of the ten
VedhaStar pairsWhether the two stars obstruct each other outright

Six of these have a direct counterpart in guna milan — Dina is Tara, Rasi is Bhakoot, Rasyadhipathi is Graha Maitri — which is why the two systems usually land in the same region even when the totals differ.

Rajju — The One That Decides

The twenty-seven nakshatras divide into five rajju groups, imagined as parts of a body: pada (feet), katti (waist), udara (stomach), kanta (neck) and siro (head). When both stars fall in the same group, Rajju dosha is present, and the tradition treats it as the gravest single objection in the whole system — it is read for the husband's longevity and for the marriage holding at all.

Two things are worth knowing before this frightens anyone. Where the dosha falls changes its weight — siro rajju is treated most seriously, pada rajju least — and the classical texts allow it to be set aside when the rest of the poruthams are strong and the seventh houses in both charts are sound. What no honest astrologer does is ignore it silently. Your result names the rajju group for each star, so you can see exactly what the objection rests on.

Vedha, and the Stars That Block Each Other

Certain nakshatras are held to obstruct particular others — Ashwini with Jyeshtha, Bharani with Anuradha, and so on down a fixed list of pairs. Where the two stars form such a pair, Vedha dosha is present and the porutham is lost outright.

It is a blunt rule and it behaves like one: there is no partial credit. The useful thing about it is that it is easy to check and impossible to argue with, which is why families in the south often ask for the two nakshatras before they ask for anything else. Like Rajju, it is set aside only when the rest of the match is unusually strong, and never by assertion alone.

Porutham and Guna Milan Compared

People ask which is right. Both are, in their own tradition — they read the same two Moons and weigh them by different rules.

ThresholdJudged porutham by porutham, not by a single number18 of 36

In practice I run both and look for agreement. When the northern score and the southern poruthams point the same way, the temperamental fit is settled and the reading moves on to the seventh houses. When they disagree, the disagreement itself is informative — it usually means one decisive rule has fired on one side and not the other.

Dasha Sandhi, and Why the Date Is Moved

Southern practice pays close attention to the join between two mahadashas — the sandhi. The last months of one period and the first of the next are treated as unsettled ground: not unlucky exactly, but a stretch where a life is between two authorities and things started in it tend to be re-made later.

So a wedding date falling inside either person's sandhi is usually moved a few months. Your result shows the position for both charts. It is a question of timing rather than of compatibility, and it is one of the few objections in matching that costs nothing to respect.

How Many Poruthams Are Enough?

The traditional answer is a count rather than a percentage, and it is stricter than the northern threshold.

7 or More

A Match Families Proceed With

Especially when Rajju and Vedha are both clear. Above eight is uncommon and worth noting.

5 to 6

Acceptable, with the Deciding Two Clear

Most real marriages sit here. Which poruthams failed matters more than the count.

Read Further Before Deciding

A high count does not cancel these two. Read both seventh houses, Venus and the Navamsa before treating the objection as final — or as fatal.

How Accurate Is Online Porutham Matching?

The rules are tables, so the working is exact once the two nakshatras are right. Both charts here are computed on the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is what the panchang uses, and the poruthams follow the standard reckoning.

Birth time matters less here than in a house-based reading — the Moon holds a nakshatra for about a day — but it matters at the boundary: a birth in the last hour of a star can move both the nakshatra and its rajju group, and with them the whole verdict. Where the result shows a star close to its edge, confirm the time before acting on it.

The porutham on this page follows the order he uses at the table — the ten agreements first, then Rajju and Vedha, then both seventh houses.

Porutham — The Questions People Ask

The south Indian method of matching two charts. It works from the Moon's nakshatra in each — with the rasi and its lord for some tests — and checks ten agreements: Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree Deergha, Yoni, Rasi, Rasyadhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedha.

Traditionally seven or more, with Rajju and Vedha clear. Five or six is acceptable and covers most real marriages. Unlike guna milan there is no single number that settles it — which poruthams failed matters more than how many.

The twenty-seven stars fall into five rajju groups. When both stars belong to the same group the dosha is present, and it is the gravest objection in porutham — read for the husband's longevity and for the marriage holding. Its weight depends on the group: siro is treated most seriously, pada least.

Certain nakshatras obstruct particular others in fixed pairs, such as Ashwini with Jyeshtha. Where the two stars form such a pair the porutham is lost outright — there is no partial credit, which is why families often ask for the two stars first.

Neither is better; they are two traditions reading the same two Moons. Six of the ten poruthams have a direct counterpart among the eight kootas. Where both point the same way the fit is settled; where they differ, one decisive rule has usually fired on one side only.

The join between one mahadasha and the next. Southern practice treats those months as unsettled ground and moves a wedding date out of them. It is a timing objection, not a judgement on the match.

Less than for a house-based reading, since the Moon holds a nakshatra for about a day. It matters at the boundary: a birth in the last hour of a star can change the nakshatra and its rajju group, and with them the verdict.

The texts allow it to be set aside when the other poruthams are strong and both seventh houses are sound, and marriages are made this way. What no honest astrologer does is pass over it silently — the objection is named, weighed, and then decided on.
