What a janam kundli is, and what this free kundli gives you

A janam kundli is the sky at the minute you were born, drawn from the place you were born. That is the whole of it — and nothing less exact will do. The sign rising on the eastern horizon becomes your lagna, the first house. The nine grahas fall into signs and houses by their true positions. The Moon's nakshatra fixes the dasha, the sequence of planetary periods your life runs through. Every reading a Vedic astrologer will ever give you — marriage, career, children, health, the timing of any of them — starts from this one drawing.

This free kundli by date of birth is cast the way I cast one by hand: planetary positions from the Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa by default with more than forty ayanamsas to choose from, the birth chart in both the north Indian and south Indian style, the Navamsa beside it, and the tables that actually get read — every planet with its degree, nakshatra and pada, the twelve houses with their lords and occupants, the full Vimshottari dasha, the panchang of your birth day, and the avakhada chakra a family asks for before a match. No sign-up, no email, nothing behind a paywall.

The north Indian kundli: the lagna in the top diamond, the houses counted anticlockwise.

Lagna, rashi and nakshatra — the three names of your kundli

People ask "what is my sign" and get three different answers, because Jyotish has three. Your lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising in the east at birth. It changes every two hours, which is why the birth time matters more than anything else on this page; it is the frame from which the other eleven houses are counted, and the strongest single statement about your body, your temperament and your life's direction. Your rashi is the sign the Moon occupies — the sign a pandit means when he asks for your rashi, the sign your name letter comes from, the sign your daily and monthly horoscope is read from. Your janma nakshatra is the Moon's star, one of twenty-seven, and it decides two large things: the Vimshottari dasha that begins at your birth, and the gana, nadi and yoni that kundli matching scores.

Your kundli gives all three, with degrees. An astrologer reads the lagna kundli first, the chandra kundli — the Moon taken as the first house — second, and trusts a result only when both agree.

How to read your birth chart — the north Indian and south Indian kundli

The same chart is drawn two ways in India, and your kundli shows both. In the north Indian kundli the houses stay fixed — the diamond at the top is always the first house — and the sign numbers move: the lagna sign sits in that top diamond and the rest follow anticlockwise. In the south Indian kundli the signs stay fixed — Pisces is always the top-left square — and the lagna is marked; houses are counted clockwise from it. Neither is more correct. Read the one you were taught, and switch with the toggle.

What to look at first: the planets sitting in the lagna, the 7th and the 10th — the self, the partner, the work. Then where the lagna lord has gone; a lagna lord in the 10th house lives for the career, in the 7th for the marriage, in the 12th abroad or within. Then any house holding three or more planets — that is where the life concentrates.

The nine grahas — planetary positions in your kundli

The planets table is where an astrologer spends most of the time, and five columns carry the reading.

  • Sign and degree, to the minute. A planet in the first or last degree of a sign is at a sandhi, a junction, and behaves unsteadily.
  • Nakshatra and pada — the star inside the sign, and its lord. In Krishnamurti Paddhati the nakshatra lord outranks the sign; in Parashari it colours what the planet gives.
  • House — the department of life the planet acts on.
  • Dignity — exalted, own sign, friend, neutral, enemy or debilitated. Strength before anything else: an exalted planet in a bad house still gives; a debilitated planet in a good house gives little.
  • Retrograde and combust — a retrograde planet works inwardly and delivers late; a combust one, burned by the Sun's proximity, cannot give its full result. The R against Rahu and Ketu is normal: the nodes are always retrograde.

The twelve houses of the kundli, and what each one holds

The houses are the areas of life; the planets are the actors in them. Each house has a sign, the lord of that sign, the planets sitting in it and the planets aspecting it from elsewhere — and reading a house means reading all four together. A strong 7th house with a weak 7th lord is not a strong marriage.

Vimshottari dasha — the timing written into your kundli

The chart says what; the dasha says when. Vimshottari divides 120 years among the nine planets in a fixed order — Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 — beginning from the lord of the Moon's nakshatra at birth, with a balance of that first period already run. Each mahadasha holds nine antardashas, each antardasha nine pratyantardashas, and a careful astrologer reads to the third level before naming a month.

Your dasha table shows every mahadasha from birth to 120, the period running now, and the balance you were born with. Every timing question in Jyotish — when will I marry, when does the job come, when does this stretch end — is a dasha question before it is anything else, and the answer is read by asking what the running lord promises for that house in your birth chart.

Yogas and doshas in your kundli — Manglik, Kaal Sarp, Sade Sati

A yoga is a combination of planets that produces a result together: the Raja yogas that raise a person, the Dhana yogas that bring wealth, the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas that give one planet its full expression. A dosha is a combination that works against: Mangal dosha from Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th, Kaal Sarp dosha from every planet hemmed between Rahu and Ketu, Sade Sati from Saturn's seven-and-a-half-year transit over the natal Moon. Your kundli counts the yogas present by category and states the Manglik position plainly — present or not, and how strongly.

A word from practice. Manglik dosha is present in roughly a third of all charts and cancelled or softened in most of them, and Kaal Sarp yoga is claimed for far more charts than it actually afflicts. A dosha on the list is a reason to read further, not a verdict. The Mangal dosha and marriage prediction pages read the Manglik position properly, against the whole chart.

Avakhada chakra and panchang at birth — the details a pandit writes first

Open any handwritten janam kundli and the first page is not the chart. It is the avakhada chakra — varna, vashya, yoni, gana, nadi, the name letter, the paya, the rashi lord — and the panchang of the birth day: tithi, vaar, nakshatra, yoga, karana, with the sunrise and the ishtakal. These are read from the Moon's sign and star, and they are what a family asks for before a match, because the eight koota of kundli matching are scored from exactly these. Your free kundli gives them as a pandit would write them.

How accurate is an online kundli? Birth time, ayanamsa and the rest

As accurate as the birth time, and no more. The planetary positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris — the same planetary data astronomers use — for the exact minute and place you enter, and they match what an astrologer casts by hand to the arc-minute. The one thing that depends on you is the time. The lagna moves one degree every four minutes; an hour's error can carry it into the next sign and shift every house with it. Use the hospital record, not the family's memory, and when in doubt have the birth time rectified before you act on a reading.

Two settings you may be asked about. This kundli uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa by default — the Indian government standard — with the mean node for Rahu and Ketu; more than forty ayanamsas are supported, including Raman, Krishnamurti and Fagan-Bradley, under Advanced settings, because some traditions and all of KP astrology use others. And a kundli is a chart, not a prediction: what it says about your marriage, career or the year ahead is on the prediction pages of this site, and in a consultation.

Questions

Free kundli — the questions people ask

One thing, three names. Kundli and janam kundli are the Hindi words for the Vedic birth chart — the sky at the moment of birth drawn with the sidereal zodiac and whole-sign houses from the lagna. 'Birth chart' is also used for the Western natal chart, which uses the tropical zodiac and different house systems; the two do not read the same way. Our Western birth chart calculator is a separate page.

Yes, as close as you can get it. The lagna changes sign every two hours and moves a degree every four minutes; the Moon changes nakshatra roughly daily. An hour's error can shift the ascendant and every house. If the time is unknown, a chandra kundli can still be read from the Moon, but the houses and the dasha balance will be approximate — have the time rectified before acting on anything important.

Lagna is the sign rising in the east at birth — the first house, from which the other eleven are counted, and the strongest statement about the body and the life's direction. Rashi is the sign the Moon occupies — the sign your name letter, your nakshatra, your dasha and your daily horoscope come from. Both are read; a result is trusted when both agree.

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) by default — the standard used across India and by the government panchang — with the mean lunar node. More than forty ayanamsas are supported under Advanced settings, including Raman, Krishnamurti (KP) and Fagan-Bradley. It matters at sign borders: a planet in the last degree of a sign under Lahiri may sit in the next sign under another ayanamsa.

The Navamsa (D9) divides each sign into nine parts and redraws the chart from them. It is the chart of marriage and of a planet's real strength: a planet well placed in D1 but weak in D9 does not deliver, and a planet in the same sign in both — vargottama — is strong. No serious reading is done from the birth chart alone.

The calculation is identical, and often better: the positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris for the exact minute and place, to the arc-minute, with no arithmetic slips. What an astrologer adds is the reading — judgement about what the placements mean together. This page gives you the chart he would start from; the readings are on the prediction pages and in consultation.

They are the same chart drawn two ways. North Indian keeps the houses fixed and moves the signs; south Indian keeps the signs fixed and marks the lagna. Read the one you were taught — both are shown, and the toggle switches every chart at once.

The kundli here is in English; the Astromitra app makes the same kundli in Hindi and other Indian languages, with the first chat with an astrologer free.

Your chart stays loaded on this site while you move between the calculators, and every section has its own link you can bookmark or share. Use the Print button on the kundli for a clean printout; the full life reading as a PDF is the report.
