Yamagandam
What Yamaganda Kaal Is, and Which Part of the Day It Takes
Yamaganda takes its name from Yama, and in the panchang it marks a stretch of the day when a new beginning is said to meet obstacles.
The method is the same as for Rahu Kaal. The time from your sunrise to your sunset is cut into eight equal parts, and on each weekday Yamaganda takes a fixed one: the fifth on Sunday, the fourth on Monday, the third on Tuesday, the second on Wednesday, the first on Thursday, the seventh on Friday and the sixth on Saturday. On a Thursday, then, the very first stretch of the morning is Yamaganda.
In South India Yamagandam is printed beside Rahu Kalam in every daily calendar, and many families will not set out on a journey or begin a long drive in it. In Jyotish the period is linked with Yamaghantaka, the shadow point that belongs to Jupiter, which is why it is read as a time when things begun lose their protection.
When I choose a time for travel, Yamaganda is the first period I strike out, before Rahu Kaal. For anything else, a purchase or an agreement, I leave out all three: Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal.

Yamaganda Kaal: Common Questions
One of the three daily periods the panchang marks as unfavourable, along with Rahu Kaal and Gulika Kaal. The daylight is divided into eight equal parts, and on each weekday Yamaganda falls in a fixed one of them. It lasts about an hour and a half.
Above all, setting out on a journey. Yamaganda is also avoided for new ventures, purchases, agreements and ceremonies. Work already under way can continue as usual.
For beginnings in general, Rahu Kaal is the one people watch most closely. For travel, Yamaganda is the one traditionally named. A careful muhurat leaves out both, along with Gulika Kaal.
Its slot changes with the weekday, and the length of each slot depends on the day's length between your sunrise and sunset, which changes with the season and with your city.
It is reckoned for the daytime, sunrise to sunset, which is how almost every panchang gives it.
