Surya Uday

Why Sunrise Is the Starting Point of the Whole Panchang

A Western calendar day starts at midnight. A Hindu day starts when the Sun comes up, and everything else in the panchang hangs on that moment.

The tithi of the day is the one running at sunrise. So are the nakshatra, yoga and karana that give the day its name. Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika and the eight Choghadiya of the day are each one eighth of the time from sunrise to sunset, and the twelve day horas are each one twelfth of it.

That is why a panchang from another city is never quite right for yours. Across India the clock is the same, but the Sun rises in Guwahati about an hour and a half before it rises in Dwarka. A muhurat read from someone else's sunrise can be off by most of an hour.

Sunrise here is the moment the upper edge of the Sun clears the horizon, with the bending of light by the air allowed for, the same definition astronomers use.

The Day Begins

The panchang day runs from one sunrise to the next.

Udaya Tithi

The tithi at sunrise names the day for fasts and festivals.

Every Kaal Follows

Rahu Kaal and Choghadiya are fractions of the daylight.

Your City Matters

Sunrise and Sunset: Common Questions

The exact sunrise for your city is at the top of this page. Set your city and date in the form to see it anywhere in the world, on any date from 1900 to 2100.

Sunrise is the moment the upper edge of the Sun appears on the horizon, allowing for the bending of light by the atmosphere. This is the standard used in astronomy and in the panchang.

The Hindu day begins at sunrise. The tithi, nakshatra and yoga of the day are the ones running at sunrise, and Rahu Kaal, Choghadiya and the horas are all fractions of the time between sunrise and sunset.

India keeps one time zone across almost 30 degrees of longitude, so the Sun rises nearly two hours earlier in the far east of the country than in the far west, by the same clock.

In India the longest day falls near 21 June and the shortest near 21 December. The difference grows the farther north you are.
