Moonrise in the Panchang, and the Fasts That Wait for It

Sunrise sets the Hindu day, but a handful of the year's most loved fasts wait for the Moon instead.

On Karva Chauth, the fast is broken only after the Moon is seen. On every Sankashti Chaturthi, devotees of Ganesha wait for moonrise before eating. On Sharad Purnima, kheer is left out under the rising full Moon. For all of these, the moonrise for your own city is the time that matters.

The Moon rises about 50 minutes later every day, because it moves about 13 degrees a day against the stars. Near the full Moon it rises around sunset; near the new Moon it rises with the Sun and cannot be seen. Once or twice a month the moonrise slips past midnight, and that calendar date has none.

Moonrise here is the moment the upper edge of the Moon appears on the horizon, allowing for the bending of light by the atmosphere, the same convention used for sunrise.

Karva Chauth

The fast ends when the Moon is sighted in your city.

Sankashti Chaturthi

Ganesha's monthly fast waits for moonrise.

About 50 Minutes Later

The Moon rises later each day as it moves.

Moonrise and Moonset: Common Questions

The exact moonrise for your city is at the top of this page. Set your city and date in the form to see it for any place and any date.

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day along the sky against the stars, so it rises on average about 50 minutes later each day.

Because the Moon rises about 50 minutes later each day, once or twice a month the next moonrise slips past midnight, and that calendar date has no moonrise at all. The page then shows the next one with its date.

These fasts are broken only after sighting the Moon, so the moonrise time for your own city decides when the fast ends.

No. Like sunrise, it changes with your latitude and longitude, often by many minutes between cities on the same clock.
