How the Horas Follow One Another, and What Each One Suits
Every hour of the day belongs to a planet, and the old astrologers chose their moments by it long before clocks did.
The daylight is divided into twelve horas and the night into twelve more. The first hora after sunrise belongs to the lord of the weekday, and the rest follow in the order of the planets from slowest to fastest: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. Count twenty-four horas through a Sunday and the first hora of the next morning falls to the Moon, which is why Monday follows Sunday.
The hora is the quickest timing tool in Jyotish. A Mercury hora for sending a proposal, a Jupiter hora for meeting a teacher, a Venus hora for buying jewellery, a Sun hora for a government office: it adds a small, steady push in the right direction.
When I need an exact time inside a good day, the hora is what I reach for last. The tithi and nakshatra choose the day, Rahu Kaal clears out the bad hours, and the hora picks the best hour of the ones left.

Questions
Hora: Common Questions
A planetary hour. The day from sunrise to sunset is divided into twelve horas and the night into twelve more, and each is ruled by one of the seven planets in turn.
The first hora after sunrise belongs to the planet that rules the weekday: the Sun on Sunday, the Moon on Monday, and so on. That is in fact how the weekdays got their order.
In the order of the planets' speed, slowest first: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, and round again.
Sun for meeting officials and authority, Moon for travel and dealing with the public, Mars for property and courage, Mercury for trade, writing and study, Jupiter for learning, advice and worship, Venus for love, arts and luxury, and Saturn for labour, repair and long work.
Only near the equinoxes. A day hora is one twelfth of the daylight and a night hora one twelfth of the night, so they stretch and shrink with the seasons.
