Gulikai Kalam

What Gulika Kaal Is, and Why Things Begun in It Repeat

Gulika is the son of Saturn, and he gives his period one unusual quality: whatever begins in it tends to happen again.

The daylight is divided into eight equal parts. Gulika takes the seventh on Sunday, the sixth on Monday, the fifth on Tuesday, the fourth on Wednesday, the third on Thursday, the second on Friday and the first on Saturday, so on a Saturday Gulika Kaal opens the day.

Because of its repeating nature, Gulikai Kalam is kept clear of anything nobody wants twice. A funeral rite is never started in it, and many families will not take a loan, sign for a debt or fix a surgery in it. In Kerala and Tamil Nadu it is printed in every daily calendar beside Rahu Kalam and Yamagandam.

I read Gulika Kaal the way the texts describe it, as a period of Saturn: slow, heavy and binding. I leave it out of any muhurat for a new start, along with Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda, and choose from the hours that remain.

Questions

Gulika Kaal: Common Questions

A period of about an hour and a half each day ruled by Gulika, the son of Saturn. Like Rahu Kaal it is one eighth of the daylight, at a fixed slot for each weekday. Its special nature is that whatever begins in it is said to repeat.

Anything you would not want to happen again: taking a loan, a funeral rite, a surgery, signing for a debt. Most families also keep new ventures out of it, as they do for Rahu Kaal.

Some traditions turn the rule round and use Gulika Kaal for things you would like to repeat, such as a deposit into savings or the first payment on something you mean to keep adding to. That is a family custom rather than a rule of the texts.

In the kundli, Gulika and Mandi are two closely related shadow points of Saturn, and many astrologers use the names for the same thing. Gulika Kaal in the panchang is the day-slot that bears the name.

The slot changes with the weekday, and the length of each slot depends on how long the day is between your sunrise and sunset.
